A pleasant stay in Caen!

This was one of a trio of hotels that I stayed in with a Gate 1 group tour. i was told by the staff that the hotel had recently been renovated and each room, my own included, had a nautical theme. It is well located not far from the centre or town [in the heart of Normandy] with the train station and places to eat close by. The room I had was clean and spacious with a walk in shower with good water pressure and hot water. Toiletries provided are limited. [so make sure you have some of your own with you.] If you are a light sleeper, ask for a room away from the marina area and perhaps on a higher floor since it can get noisy especially during the weekend. If you are there on a weekend, there is the St. Pierre market on Sunday. The breakfast is good, the food is fresh and the waitstaff courteous. I would recommend.

Lovely modern hotel by the marina (ideal if you want outdoor space) and within easy walking distance of the centre of Caen, about 15 minutes walk from the train station. Our Privilege room was clean, spacious, well equipped and comfortable. The decor had a lovely nautical feel. Lovely clean walk-in shower, lush honey based shower gel, hair conditioner, handwash and body lotion in line with the Privilege room. Separate toilet. Air conditioning was a tad noisy on the lowest setting, but very efficient at cooling the room. As the courtyard facing room was quiet, we left the window open after the first night to keep cool. Nice compact gym in the basement. Lovely spacious lobby with sofas and books. For the eco friendly guests there are recycling bins and cold water fountain in the lobby too. Plenty of bars, restaurants, cafes and mini-supermarkets nearby. Front of house and bar staff friendly and helpful too. Overall, an excellent hotel.

This was one of three hotels we stayed at during our trip to Normandy. Great lobby - nicely decorated! Room was clean. Short walks to area restaurants and historical monuments. Paid extra for breakfast, which was delicious! Nighttime was a bit noisy with loud partygoers near the marina. Disappointed in bar service, as bartenders were not very attentive or pleasant. Young women at the front desk were very helpful in arranging transportation for off-site excursions.

Good hotel but beware the room choice for the weekend!

Well located close to the marina and places to eat and drink The room was spacious and the bed and amenities were very good. We had a room overlooking the marina area which on the outset seemed great. It had been a very warm day in October and the window needed to be open at night - the aircon was turned off centrally as it should have been colder at that time. We stayed on a weekend and a marina facing room is a no no! The well oiled celebrating individuals that frequented the bars opposite kept up their banter until about 4am - then at 5am, the market started to set up - right under our window! Not a good nights sleep. The next two nights were however much better! Breakfast was good and the bar area was pleasant enough.

Avoid lower floor rooms!

On a travel trip with Gate 1 Travel recently. One of the hotels selected on our trip was Mercure Caen Centre in Caen, France. Not having been to this hotel before. I contacted the hotel by email asking if I could have a room on a higher floor. I sent the same request to the two other hotels we were staying at during our trip. The two other hotels honored my request. Upon arrival I was given keys to a room on first floor. The room was very dark. The room itself was below ground level and window which was small was on the floor level of ground. I went immediately to the front desk where the male desk clerk said he couldn’t help me. Luckily our tour guide had a copy of my email request that I had sent the hotel. Another clerk came in and she was able to provide me with a room on the 3rd floor. Which solved the problem. And I may add the female clerk was customer service friendly. If you are staying at this hotel in the future. I suggest that you make sure to avoid the rooms on lower floors and avoid rooms facing the busy streets. As many people on our trip had problems sleeping because of nightlife which the rooms face.
