Poorly appointed hotel, inexperienced staff

We booked a standard room that at the time of booking was only shown as a twin room. I sent two emails to the hotel requesting change to a double room and separate duvets but nothing had been changed. We upgraded to a suite that was one of the worst furnished suites we have ever stayed in. Light switches were only at the door and at the bed. It was impossible to open the tap in the bathtub without actually being in the bathtub due to poor planning of the bathroom and a glass wall obstructing access to the tap. The safe had not been mounted to anything so anyone could just walk away with the entire safe rendering it completely useless. On check-out our key cards stopped working at 11:00 even though check out was at noon. We requested late check out and got an extra 30 minutes. When I went to pay at 12:05 I was informed in a rude way that we had overstayed. The restaurant on 3rd floor was poor and not up to the normal standard in the city. A very disappointing stay.

Convenient location in old town. New, clean, good breakfast, hospitable staff. Hotel fresh from renovation, sauna not ready yet (hammam only). Large swimming pool. Air conditioning was weak in the room.

Mercure Bukhara is a nice hotel walking distance to the old town. The rooms are a good size and the hotel staff are friendly. All in all, I good place to stay while in Bukhara.
