We booked Mercure Paignton for a short couples break and were really impressed. The hotel feels calm and contemporary, with a lovely seafront setting that’s perfect for unwinding. Our room was stylish, quiet and very comfortable, with great views to wake up to. The bar and restaurant areas had a nice, relaxed atmosphere in the evenings, and the staff were professional without being overbearing. Everything felt well organised and thoughtfully done. A great spot for couples looking for a comfortable seaside stay.

We stayed over Christmas as a couple and had a really enjoyable break. The hotel is modern, clean and in a great seafront location, perfect for winter walks along the beach. Our room was comfortable and well presented, and the staff were friendly and welcoming throughout our stay, even during the busy festive period. Breakfast was good with plenty of choice, and the Christmas atmosphere was a nice touch. Overall, a relaxing and pleasant stay – we’d happily return.

Very disappointing dogs before guests

We stayed for a couple of nights and despite saying i was allergic to dogs at check in we were put in a room which as the night went on i struggled to breath in and we had to move.A dog had definately been in the room. We were then moved to the third floor where we were told no dogs can stay and the family 2 doors down came out their door with a dog! We were then moved to the fourth floor. Reception had sofas with dogs lying on them and even at breakfast an owner had a dog in their arms next to me when getting their food sorry but this is not hygenic and totally unfair to anyone with an allergy we were told we would be refunded, we weren’t. Very disappointed dogs are definately the priority at this hotel we were told guests stay and to save paying extra say they have dogs which is totally unfair to people who stay in the room after them as i found out.

You should never have been allocated a room where a dog had previously stayed, and I completely understand how distressing it must have been to feel unwell as a result. The further inconvenience of being moved multiple times, coupled with conflicting information about which floors are dog‑free, is unacceptable. Your experience highlights a breakdown in our communication and allocation processes, and I apologise sincerely for the disruption this caused. I have raised this with the team to ensure our room‑assignment procedures are tightened and that allergy‑related requests are handled with the seriousness they deserve. I am also concerned by your comments regarding dogs on the lobby furniture and the situation you encountered at breakfast. While we are a dog‑friendly hotel, hygiene and guest comfort must always remain the priority. Your feedback has been shared with our management team so that our policies and enforcement can be reviewed urgently. Finally, I am sorry to hear that the refund you were advised of has not been received. We stayed here for a couple days after Christmas. Check in was easy and room was sea view on 3rd floor. It was a lovely room with a great view but the windows were very dirty ( sea front location ) so not sure how often they are cleaned. Bathroom was nice but the shower flooded the whole room each time we used it. Bath robes in room ( one of which was dirty ) and one pair of slippers! The lifts were just outside our room and found the noise of those quite annoying .We ate dinner in the restaurant which was pleasant but no atmosphere as we were the only diners! Breakfast was not relaxing at all! It was just so so busy! The car park was very expensive so we parked elsewhere for a fraction of the price the hotel were charging. Overall nice stay but not sure we would return
