Magical place

TripAdvisor rating 4.0/5

toniaa913 Couples - TripAdvisor review

This was our 5th visit to the lodge and we were a little disappointed on a couple of things. The hairdryer was melted and I wasn't sure it was safe to use, reported it but it wasn't replaced during our stay. We also had to listen to a very dictatorial staff member bossing around kitchen staff in the tavern, we made sure we sat away from the kitchen area on our next meal. That said the lodge is still a magical place. The rooms are cosy and comfortable. Every time we stay we see the pademelons out the window and this time we were entertained by an enchidna as well. Breakfast was really good and we enjoyed our meals at the Tavern.

Tired, needs up-dating but staff are very friendly, convenient for access to the park

This place needs a refresh, it's looking very tired. We had a Pine Cabin, no view, probably their basic one, view was outside looking at the woods. I don't mind the lack of a TV in the rooms, lack of wifi can be a bit of a pain as they shut up the main lounge area at the lodge (where wifi is available) about 10pm but we were only here for a few days so it wasn't a problem and I read my book instead. Tavern and restaurant for evening meals was good, we tried both, the service was prompt, although in the tavern queueing at the bar was a bit chaotic. The staff are all excellent, very friendly and helpful, we have no complaints there but we did have some issues: Breakfast - this was buffet but it was a bit of a mixed bag, if you came later (9pm) you risked not having much food as they were forgetting to restock, also the hot water for making tea/coffee is in these small jugs which means twisting the cap trying to get hot water out. I gave up and just took the lid off as did others, why don't they have a hot water urn instead? They had them for the milk but not the hot water, so the staff were constantly having to keep an eye on them. First day there they ran out of tea cups they just had saucers, we had to ask for them, they should be regularly replenished. A large bowl of what looked like plain yoghurt was placed directly under the milk urn where everyone leant over to finish making their tea not hygienic! That should have been moved out the way. The toaster was one of those irritating very slow moving grills which meant lots of wasted toast, the dial to change the heat settings had been removed. Also, it was noticeable that the fruit in the bowls was tinned. Outdoor areas - the cabins could do with some seating area outside, instead there's just scrappy gravel and what look like sacks for the laundry dumped outside each one presumably to save the cleaners having to go backwards and forwards, I understand the reasoning but those bags are unsightly and need to be kept away, they were left outside the whole time we were there. Also they could do with putting fresh tarmac down as it's been worn away and adds to the air of general neglect. Signage - the various walks you can do around the lodge need a bit of attention, there were warning signs bleached by the sun, you couldn't make out the wording, they need replacing. Cabins - the lampshade in our room looked like it had been in a war with something and lost, the hairdryer had a big chip in it and the motor sounded as if it was about to explode. We left it out with a note asking for it to be replaced and also told reception, there were chips on the paintwork, especially on the skirting boards and door surrounds. Shower rooms were basic but clean, they are probably at the stage where they could do with being up-dated. This lodge is obviously popular because it's in the park itself so it's easy to just walk down to the bus which takes you to the various hikes around the lake, you can park directly outside your cabin rather than have to use the general parking area a few km's away which is another plus but if I was to revisit I wouldn't stay here again, I don't know where the profits are going but it's clearly not on the amenities.

15 years ago this place may have been fairly decent….

I don’t normally write reviews, but feel it’s my duty to report on the state of this seriously neglected, former icon of the high country. The lodge itself is pleasant enough, the cabins are massively outdated, wrinkles in the carpet, walls in need of a paint, chipped wooden surfaces. Cabin was clean, but the carpet was stained, deck was slimey and slippery, was a dead bird on deck first night, the Scottish maintenance person removed it and was very apologetic. Ain’t worth the coin, never again… Whoever is managing this place is either incompetent or not being payed enough.

Thank you for sharing your feedback. We're sorry to hear that your experience didn’t meet expectations. It’s clear that your stay didn’t reflect the standard we aim for, and we sincerely apologize for the issues you encountered with the cabins and maintenance. We're grateful for your honest input, as it helps us identify areas that need immediate attention and improvement. We’ll take your comments seriously and address the concerns about cleanliness, maintenance, and overall upkeep. We hope that you’ll consider giving us another chance in the future. Rooms dated. No internet. Bar understaffed so poor service. Bar doesn't open until 11.30 so can't get drinks or coffee. NO DISCOUNT on food in main dining room and no explanation why. French owned but no cognac in bar. Food in main dining room just awful. Limited menu and even then some menu items not available. Reception staff very helpful

Fantastic experience and Peppers Cradle Mountain Lodge. Food Customer service. Authentic experience staying at cradle mountain in a wooden lodge. No WIFI no TV, lodges are god quality and bed comfortable with spa bath and log burner fire already made up. You can buy an access ticket for the National Park and shuttle Bus up to the mountain walks from reception and get bus from across the road. Great location.
