Great deal and location

Just south of Shanghai Culture Square, this is one of the best kept secrets in Shanghai for those on a budget/extended stay -- IF you book the right room. Pro: great location; good wi-fi; big, comfortable beds; laundry service; some rooms have great views. Cons: no refrigerator; minimal breakfast; small staff; older building with some wear and tear. Despite these shortcomings, it's located in a very charming and convenient location, with a couple cafes that cater to western travelers right around the corner on Shaoxing Lu. Other restaurants, cafes and supermarkets can be found very close by on Jiashan, Jianguou and Yongkang Roads; IAPM shopping mall, the Metro station and many other areas of interest are within walking/biking distance. The location is user-friendly for English-speaking travelers without being touristy.
Room size better for solo travelers

Spend 6 nights here while attending a conference at the nearby InterContinental Shanghai Ruijin. Being my first trip to China, I wasn't sure what to expect when it came to hotel accommodations. The Hanting isn't luxurious by any means, but if you're looking for a decent budget hotel and don't mind a small room, it does the trick. My room was tiny, with either side of the room's full size bed nearly touching the wall. Because I was traveling solo, it wasn't a problem. Those traveling with a companion might want to consider another option, and definitely don't try to squeeze a family into one of these rooms. They offered a simple, but enjoyable breakfast spread on the top floor. (Take the elevator to the last accessible floor. Exit and look for the adjacent stairwell. Climb the last flight on foot to reach the top floor.) There was an additional charge for the breakfast buffet, but because it was covered by the employer who booked my stay for me, I enjoyed it well. Had breakfast been at my own expense, I would have skipped the hotel breakfast for someplace with more of an atmosphere and more options, but worth checking out if you're short on time and in need of something quick. I did notice the majority of those enjoying breakfast on the top level were solo travelers as well. From my observations, the hotel seems to best serve those traveling on business. The staff at the front desk was friendly, but few members spoke English. In the middle of my stay my room key mysteriously stopped working and I returned at the end of the day unable to get into my room. It took several staff members to understand what I was saying and they attempted to re-activate the electronic room key twice before I was able to enter my room. Overall, the room was clean, the water pressure in the shower was good, and the air-conditioning was a lifesaver in the heat and humidity of Shanghai's summer.
Poor room, good location

This Hotel I have been before and got a reasonable room for the money. this time I booked in internet (agoda.de) and got a reasonable price. However the room was old, quite shabby. You don't feel fine and clean. Window very small. Asking for the reason we got answer, that because of the low price we got the cheapest room. Means for me if you book in internet, you will get lower quality room, because of price pressur. I recommend to book directly with them. Then you will have the right value for your money. Location however is good. In Jingan District, a very interesting old area with typical shops and markets. Easy access to Nanjing West Road, the famous and elegant shopping street.

For that money (I was bit late so paid 280, but rooms are available for approx 200) hotel has excellent location and sufficient quality. Rooms are clean (though you can smell stale cigarettes) and spacious - I stayed in queen bed facing backyard. Would not mind having bigger window. They have good quality shower. But of course it is not about hotel - but about location - French Concession border short walk to attractions, not that far from metro. Just next to hotel decent massage house (45min for 50RMB) and lot of small cheap eateries (on the streets to the left from Shaanxi Rd if you go towards metro). And call places in French Concession at close by. Btw - don't expect much in English from the staff.

It was during the Tomb Sweeping Festival and I accidentally booked the wrong night for a different hostel. These guys accepted us no problem. It was expensive (I think) around 400RMB a night for two beds, but the room was clean (despite a few insects) and really convenient. I can't give a really good review because we stayed one night in a double room, but it was clean and convenient and worth that I paid considering the jam we were in.
