Great for the money and when compared to other similarly priced options around. My favorite place to crash for cheap in Shanghai is called the Genting Star, but they were fully booked up and a little out of the way for this trip. I had been burned recently by some really bad places so I decided to try this place for 350 rmb (about 51 USD). From the outside the place looks like a mess but that is only the entrance to the elevator. You go to the 3rd floor and check in was very good and easy. The carpets in the hall were terrible so I was worried but when I got to my room it was very nice and clean and was great for the money. I was exhausted so I went to sleep and actually slept very sound. The pillows and bed were good and the neighborhood was quiet. Would stay again.

Some guests might feel disconcerted that the staff at Hanting Express speaks a little to no English. However, it was a plus in my book: It served as a fantastic incentive to get my Mandarin skills up to par. While certain points were difficult to get across, the staff and I were able to communicate quite well, sometimes on our own and sometimes with the help of their translator app. Once the language discrepancies are under control, everyone is clearly helpful and working hard to accommodate every guest's needs. Certain hotels in China are bound by the government to accept only certain types of people as their patrons. Basically, no waiguoren (foreigners) allowed. But Hanting Express is a different story: While I was their only non-Chinese guest, they graciously accepted me (and my RMB, haha); they went so far as to put my larger suitcase in storage, while I took a weekend trip to nearby Suzhou, and upgrade me to a room with a better view, upon my return. The rooms are clean... I cannot put enough emphasis on how important that is! The neighborhood is safe-- as most, if not all, of Shanghai; the hotel is located a mere block away from various stores and small restaurants. You'll even find a cute music shop, displaying some shiny pianos and guitars. The metro is also walking distance, as is the majestic Bund (aka Wai Tan). It may not be brand-spanking swanky like the Bund Riverside, but I'd definitely recommend Hanting for future stays. Plus, it's smack-dab in the middle of Shang-freaking-hai! No complaints, no regrets. :)
Nobody speaks English

We stayed 2 nights at the hotel during our travel in China. It was not an easy find as the hotel is a couple of floors in a huge building. We actually ended up on a wrong floor, but the lady seemed to have experienced that already in the past. So finally, we made it to the reception. Start using hand and feet, because nobody speaks a word of English. Once the necessary paperwork was done, we could go the the room. It was rather small, but we managed for the couple of nights we booked. Even if we were tired, I didn't feel particularly comfortable in the bed. The room was almost acceptable clean, but I do not think they clean while you stay there. Breakfast options are to be found in the neighborhood. Not in the hotel. I think I will look for alternatives next time I will be in Shanghai.

This was booked by the couple we were travelling with. They speak Chinese and location was good and one of the chain hotels. We were not sure so we booked 2 nights and looked ok, so we booked another 2 nights. Location wise, we were very happy. Hard to find at first chck in because OF side street entrance but ok after that. Bed sheets were not changed after first 2 nights so we complained and after that changed every night and very clean. Wifi was free but got off and on. Rooms were a little bit small. Seems to be cheaper for locals and regulars with royality card and they seems to get small breakfasts included but hey we were tourists so when booked through booking.com and got reasonable price and reasonable rooms we were happy. BUT NOT A CUP OF TEA FOR EVERYBODY BECAUSE NOBODY THERE SPEAKS ONE WORD OF ENGLISH. No regret for staying there but not again ourselves as we don't speak Chinese and because there seems to be more hotels around there with similar prices.
