Our stay was better than we expected as had read some of the reviews. Our room suited us fine as there were windows and we could open our door across from an outer door for fresh air. Did not realise rooms were not being serviced so had to go to reception for milk/tea, might be nice to be told when checking in. Gala dinner food not special but meal on Sunday evening very nice and in view of number of guests staff coped very well. Setting lovely and enjoyed our stay thank you

Grounds are lovely but most other facilities were mediocre

The staff we met were themselves very pleasant and offering the best service they could. However back office support, such as 2 weeks of unanswered emails, failed phone calls trying to confirm reservation and general communication was terrible. Menu was not as originally agreed, no proper consultation over changes other than its not available. In the end the dinner food was poor. Breakfast was "OK" but clean dishes, cups and individual items of food often ran out. Rooms lacked full tea/coffee making facilities. It was expensive for what was offered and sadly not somewhere we would choose again.

Lovely location, stunning room in the Old House, let down by lack of staff in Bar/Restaurant.

I attended a Gala Awards dinner with a group of colleagues. Despite current staffing challenges we were treated warmly and made welcome, the food was good, the bar stayed open, the dancing happened. Our room for the night was very comfortable and clean with a generous sized bed. Breakfast in the morning was plentiful with a good choice (butter ran out at one stage but that was hardly a crisis). Checkout was easy and quick. I noted that we had been undercharged for our wine consumption, but that was soon remedies. ~ all in all ~ a great stay and thank you!

Convenient position and excellent grounds.

Friendly helpful staff at reception, bar and restaurant. lovely grounds and gardens. Clean and tidy at all times. The buildings are showing their age with lots of maintenance needed. Paintwork poor on stables and handrail falling off on staircase to 40/41. This is a major safety feature. The wall shows that this had been poorly repaired a number of times. (reported to staff present)

Beautiful grounds but not worth the money

Stayed here for a friends wedding. First arrived and the grounds really stood out. They were the most beautiful place for a wedding. Asked for early check in and late check out. Both denied. When I went to reception I felt like I was an inconvenience. Went to my friends room first. Gorgeous room but key cards didn’t work and no plug sockets near the mirror. Finally got into our room and we could not open the windows. The room was boiling and the air con took a while to kick in. Room itself was lovely and the only fault we could find was one of the nights in the bathroom wasn’t working. Not the end of the world but with the recent lockdowns there seems to have been plenty of time to have this fixed. Overall we had a lovely stay, but at the price we paid I’d have expected more.

Frayed Around the Edges.

The hotel is beautifully set but has obviously suffered from a lack of maintenance and refurbishment for a number of years. With concentrated effort matters could be put to rights in a relatively short time. Charging £10.50 for a white wine spritzer does not seem reasonable!

Below expected standard

There appeared to be staffing issues, but even so the place should not have looked this down and out. Lights not working and cobwebs, furniture that looked like it was from a charity shop. Our last stay on a 9 day holiday and it left us disappointed

Looking tired

Sarah Friends - 21/09/2021 Confirmed reviews ALL

The room looked rather tired. There were patches of dust everywhere and several spiders in corners. I was also disappointed that my room was not cleaned during my stay as there was no notification at check in that daily room servicing was not available during Covid. I should have been informed and rooms should have been stocked with additional supplies e.g. more than one Nespresso pod per person.

How on earth is this a 4 star hotel? Absolutely appalling condition room, booked in to double room, ended up in a room with two single beds, no hot water the first night, stained carpet in bedroom. Bathroom in a general state of disrepair. Staircase up to the room was filthy, not sure I had seen a hoover in a long while. Had we not have been staying for a family wedding, we would’ve left early. Absolutely despicable. Have made a complaint to the hotel as I don’t think it’s acceptable to charge people for the service we received.

Our only complaint was the young man who checked us in didn’t give us any information. The air conditioning in our room didn’t work and with the window not opening was very hot!

The check-in process took over 15 minutes with guests queuing and only one person on reception. My room was not ready when I arrived at 15:00 and an hour later when I collected the key the bed was still unmade - unprofessional The air conditioning was not working properly and the room temperature was at a constant 25.5 degrees centigrade, unbearable when the windows do not open. Reception was aware of the heating problem and I was offered a fan which did nothing move than circulating the hot air in the room (a similar effect to a fan assisted oven) - appalling. I used the went to use the public conveniences in the bar area only to find one of the security guards washing his feet in the basin - totally unacceptable. The pre-booked menu was substituted for and as a main course I was given half a sea bass - never before, in any restaurant, have I been served just half a fish - pathetic. Had I not been booked in for an event I would have found alternative accommodation.

Requires Improvement

Very poor email communication from head office, as an example stated no tables available in the dining room one week ahead of our stay. When we arrived reception had no problem providing a table of our party of 8. Lack of properly trained staff in the restaurant resulted in poor service from agency staff. Looks as though the Directors are milking the business.
