Look of hotel was poor and run down, you would not re book, facilities tired and in some places empty, for example the restaurant had a number of tables missing, lounge area, 2 sofas only. Bathroom in room was poor and dirty

It’s been a while since I stayed at the Noke due to work and the covid lockdown. But as ever the welcome as friendly and warm. The new rules make you feel safe and it all works well. As ever clean tidy and always help on hand should you need it. Shame to see it underused and hopefully people will now start to stay again. It’s time to come back and stay and give our support as paying guests

Lovely Stay

Had a lovely couple days chilled in the pool,sauna,steam room pool staff where also really helpful and on hand. Rooms are ok only niggle the television was right in front the only mirror with a plug near. Food was lovely and plentiful. We did walk up the rd to the pub omg we returned the food it was stone cold in the middle and had been done in the microwave yuk, the girl who served us was really embarrassed not her fault as I explained. Overall lovely stay and would go back again.

The hotel is in need of refurbishment. It is tired and looks past it's best days. The single beds are very narrow. The rooms are dated. Reception area is very small. Shower is in the bath and not separate.

Staying for my sister's wedding

The overall feel of the hotel and ambience was great, as was the whole experience of the wedding which my sister had in the hotel's marquee. My biggest issues with the hotel is that a) it is VERY hot to an uncomfortable level in some places and also the food was very average considering the prices. The meal on the Friday night did not reflect the price we paid and the meal at the wedding was tiny. . . . who gives just 1 roast potato?. The one shining gem of my experience at the hotel was someone called Peter. Throughout our stay, he was incredibly courteous and pre-empted many of our needs (especially as my fiancee is celiac). He went above and beyond in everything he did and truly made a huge difference to the weekend.

This is my regular hotel, when I stay in St Albans. Excellent service from the staff. Nice rooms, clean and comfortable. Good bar with food, in addition to a restaurant. 5 minute drive into St Albans (well worth a visit).

Not enough care for guests to much for party's . No parking left for guests had to park in a muddy field. Could not access our room from reception had to go back outside to get around a party. The bar is very average very bland.

Hotel comfortable. Having spa facilities on site was a bonus. Food in hotel was good quality. Handy location for visiting St Albans Ideal place for a relaxing break.Only negative was room looked tired and needs some decorating.

Hotel near to motorway so my room was noisy. Window had no acoustic glazing, Spa shut at 7.pm on a Sunday I booked a superior room which was fine but dated. Bathroom had a shower above a bath so a bit like travelling back in time to the 1980's

Cold Comfort at the Inn

Peeling paint on the exterior woodwork was an ominous sign. We were allocated a room in the older part of the hotel with two single beds rather than the double we booked online. The room was shabby, dingy and freezing cold. The dated bathroom with tired tilework, grotty grouting and sealant repairs was like entering an ice box.

Mix-up with rooms and possibly the worst breakfast ever!

The only reason I have given three stars (it could easily have been less!) is that the staff were, without exception, friendly and efficient. However, the problems started before we even got there, with the online booking: we'd selected a superior twin room with breakfast for two, but the confirmation came back as a twin room for one, with one breakfast, so we had to request a call-back to get that sorted out. In the box for special requests, we'd put 'a quiet room would be appreciated if possible' - we were therefore pleased to find that the room we'd been allocated was a little way from the reception, bar and restaurant, although slightly surprised that it was a dedicated disabled room with accessible doors, toilet, shower, etc. That evening it sounded as though a herd of elephants had been let loose above us! The noise continued unabated, so we contacted reception to explain that we'd requested a quiet room and to ask what the noise was and when it was likely to stop. We were told it was a large party who were in a meeting room above us. They offered to find us an alternative room. About ten minutes later, the duty manager knocked on our door; she was very apologetic, but said as they were so busy they could only offer us a downgraded double room. We asked why we'd been allocated a room under a meeting/conference area when we'd specifically requested a quiet room, to which she replied 'Oh, the request we have is for a disabled room, nothing to do with it being quiet'!!! She apologised, and said she would deduct the cost of our breakfast the following morning from our bill. If the price hadn't been deducted, we'd have asked for a refund. We went along to the restaurant for breakfast, and were surprised we were the only ones there apart from one other table for two … perhaps everyone else knew what we didn’t! It was without doubt the worst breakfast we’ve ever had. Having been shown to the buffet, we found a tray of scrambled eggs in one solid, rubbery mass that you could slice with a knife; every fried egg on offer had a solid yolk; the so-called ‘Portobello field mushrooms’ were in fact the small tinned variety; the bacon was a solidified mass … need I go on? Even the continental breakfast wasn't up to much, the entire selection of cold meats and cheeses being presented on just two dinner plates, and the fruit was all under-ripe, hard and tasteless. We'd rather have gone up the road and had breakfast at Morrison's in St Albans!

Thin walls

The entrance to the hotel is directly off an exit from a major and busy roundabout on the A405, so don't expect a view of the English countryside from the front of the hotel. My hotel room had very thin walls, meaning I could hear people talking and even snoring in adjacent rooms. There is also a constant banging of doors in the corridor, so don't expect a quiet stay. Old style rooms with no AC and a heater in the bathroom blasting on full which couldn't be adjusted, probably due to the old ventilation window which couldn't close. WiFi was OK in my ground floor room and the restaurant was also OK.

Nice people pity about the room

Some investment needed in the rooms. The power sockets by the desk didn't work. The desk chair springs seemed to have stopped working and I felt I was sitting in a hole. The smell of some deodoriser in the room was so strong it gave me a headache and I had to sleep with the windows open.

Shocking experience as a resident

Be warned if you plan to stay at The Noke at weekends when the hotel has functions you will be treated as second class. On a recent stay I checked into the hotel late afternoon then headed off to a dinner engagement .When I returned in a heavy rainstorm I was advised I could not get through to my room because all rooms were blocked off by a function which meant normal access was not available to residents . I was made to walk outside in the rain in the dark with no signage to find an open fire exit to the corridor to the rooms the other side of the function .The hotel offered no umbrellas or assistance to find your room .When I complained in the morning about how they treated their residents over their function bookings I was assured a manager would contact me .I gave my phone number and email address but over one month later no one has contacted me .This is a franchise hotel and it shows .It is a very grubby hotel that doesnt merit the Mercure name . As a Siver card holder for Accor I have stayed in better IBIS Budget franchises It is for ACCOR to deal with as they are letting their brand down by allowing The Noke to treat customers with disdain . I would advise anyone to AVOID booking this hotel at weekends

We do advertise on our web site when we hold functions as we appreciate that guests have to either walk up some the stairs to get to their rooms or walk outside and around the building. I appreciate that this is not ideal and the owners are aware of this and the plans are to rectify this soon. I also apologise that you were not called back as this is very controllable. Being honest with you, I did not receive any communication in regards to your message so I will look into this process. For clarity, the hotel understands its role as a service provider and in the community. We would never treat anyone like a second class citizen but your feedback is welcome as it strengthens my desire to reinforce the service message to the team which I am sure we will all learn from. Once again, I can only apologise for the issue you have experienced during your stay. Great hotel

Stayed recently overnight. The original building is quite old, but very up together. There are extensive bedroom blocks at the back of the hotel, with meeting facilities, all very comfortable. The room itself was very comfortable, and large with desk and comfortable lounge type chairs. Bathroom was also very good. Everything was very clean, and we were at the rear of the building overlooking trees, so it was very quiet. The hotel has two floors, but no lift. Staff were very friendly but we did not receive our complementary drink, and nor was the key ready despite having checked in on line. Would use the hotel again

Lovely stay overall

Great room, tasty and varied breakfast. Good spa facilities. Visited for Mother and father in laws' birthday party. We took our own cake and stated it was a surprise (all arranged in advance) - somebody phoned them from the hotel to ask how they wanted their cake presented! Breakfast was buffet style except for hot drinks. Both mornings we had to ask for coffee, the second morning we asked twice before it came. The code to get through to the the spa was written on the cardboard that the key card came in, only nobody pointed this out to us so we had to walk round on a rainy day. We weren't given a padlock at the spa for our lockers, didn't even know about them, so our belongings were left unlocked. Overall we enjoyed ourselves, but it would have made it extra special if the attention to detail hadn't been overlooked.

Disappointingly Poor Customer Service

We arrived to check in at 10 pm and were given a key to our room. I had booked a Superior Double but the room turned out to be Superior Twin. I rang reception. They said they didn't have any Superior Doubles left and I could just have a Standard room. No apology at this stage. I said I wanted the room I booked. She said she'd send the Duty Manager. So we waited in the room. For 10 or 15 minutes. Hanging about, waiting. When he arrived, he explained that it was not the hotel's fault but booking.com and that because I had paid in advance he could not offer me a refund - he could not authorise it and the General Manager was not in until Monday. And that they had no more Superior Doubles. He made it sound like my fault, or booking.com's fault rather than their fault (or a problem with their booking system they need to sort out). By this stage, I was upset. I felt he and the receptionist were being rude and unhelpful. He even patronisingly explained that even if he could refund me, the money would not clear until Monday because banks are closed on Sunday. As if this was something I would not know. Eventually he persuaded us to go to see a Standard Double, after reassuring us that we would be reimbursed for the difference in price. We did actually consider going home (we live in London and had been to a wedding in Hertfordshire). We saw the room. It was smaller. It had a Mira shower from the 1980s. Still, it was getting late and we decided to stay. At this point he offered us free food (we'd eaten at the wedding) or drinks, and did bring us a bottle of champagne. Which was nice. However, he also promised that the General Manager would contact me to arrange my refund of "30% or more". That was Saturday 8th Sept. It's now Thursday 13th and I have heard nothing from them. This is not the customer service I expect from a 4* hotel. I booked a better room because the reviews (rightly) pointed out that the smaller ones were a bit tired. And ended up in one of those and paying the higher price. It's totally unacceptable for them to not contact me when they had said they would. The whole experience was extremely disappointing. There are better hotels in St Albans where the customer service meets the star-rating.

Was disappointed with the kind of bed available in the room .I have to use my shoes to stop the bed from slipping down to the Entrance door, yet this would not help, had a really terrible night, have to check out by 3am as a result of these.

I spent a week in this hotel and had a really great stay. Amenities are excellent and found all the staff friendly and courteous. Great location and would defiantly recommend it for either, business or pleasure.
