Hotel was lovely, clean and food was good. Unfortunately the lady behind the bar was awful, she was rude and made us feel like we were a burdan whenever we asked for anything. She was extremely grumpy and very off putting, as if we were just a nuisance. Everything else was fab but im afraid this made us not want to book again.

Good stay

As a Accor gold member, we were upgraded to suite 318.The room was clean with a fan, mini fridge and a safe. The views from the windows were beautiful. The hotel had hot and cold breakfast. Dinner was very good as well. The hotel location is very central and was close to the railway station and Union street. The staff were very nice. We'll be returning and would recommend this hotel.

a little disappointing

Return to Aberdeen after 50 years away. Very disappointed to be given a room with no view of the city, just an office block, keeping out the sun. And the choices at breakfast did not match the wide range given on the "breakfast menu" available in the room. Also, not everybody can access QR codes = reception did provide printed copies, but the white text on a grey background, in something like 5 point font, was very difficult to read.

Good location, great breakfast

Parking : no information prior . Car park full Room was good and quiet. Hotel itself is clean and well maintained, although it is an older property so is more tired but we enjoyed our stay.

Great location

Great location, very clean . only downside was the windows are not double glazed so was a bit noisy. The room we were given had an adjoining door to suite next door, this resulted in more noise from their room. Food was lovely, evening meal was very tasty, breakfast was hot, plentiful choice and was always being replenished

Good Lication

A fine central location. Excellent food. Friendly staff. The hotel needs a refresh and this is what lets it down. Tatty carpets, glass cracked on table in our room. Windows in room had to be left open for ventilation which is no good when major building works going on directly opp (obviously out of Hotel’s control) and noisy nightclub nearby!

Hotel is location in a great location

Breakfast was great, staff were friendly, happy with room

Excellent location, but expect street noise

Mt Business - 06/09/2021 Confirmed reviews ALL

The hotel is located centrally on Union street so could not be better positioned for a based to enjoy the city. However what comes with that is a degree of city noise, not least from a nearby nightclub. If you are a good sleeper this will not be an issue. The room was large and comfortable and staff were excellent (though clearly overworked). The facilities have been re-arranged around covid-19 precautions and this has meant the restaurant is temporarily in the bar area, making it more like a eating in a Wetherspoons Pub than a grand old hotel. Not the end of the world but it did mean we ate elsewhere on our second night. Hopefully this arrangement will change post covid, when there are more staff.

Friendly staff. Good breakfasts.

I was given a room on the 4th floor at the back of the hotel because I asked for a quiet room. Unfortunately on both occasions the room was noisy with seagulls traffic etc.

Very pleasant

The hotel was very central and we found it clean and the staff very pleasant and helpful. There is very limited parking for the hotel and nearby parking is for 1-2 hours with no return. I found this affected the enjoyment of my stay as I have difficulty walking and spent much of the time feeding meters. The car park is for non-residents also and we saw a couple of people parking and heading directly in to town. Perhaps keeping it for residents only would give better access. The breakfast was provided as a buffet with both continental and cooked breakfasts provided for. It was very well stocked and made my visit.

Tired old lady but great team

Donald Business - 30/08/2021 Confirmed reviews ALL

The "Cally" opened in 1892 and is in a superb Aberdeen city centre location. It was one of the finest hotels in Scotland in its heyday and, as a returning Aberdonian after 30 years, it was a combination of convenience, nostalgia, and a modest room rate that led me to choose it. Many "Trip Advisor" reviews are extremist -- "it was terrible" - No, it isn't; or "it was amazing" - No it isn't that either. I wish reviewers could be more rational and objective and less melodramatic. The service was excellent -- there appears to be a very enthusiastic team on board who were unfailingly polite and helpful during my two-night stay. Breakfast buffet was comprehensive and my room was clean and adequate. The problem is that the building is very old and dog-eared now and I'm sure both Accor and the operating management would carry out a massive refurbishment if they thought it was worth it. Given that their revenues in 2019/2020 fell off a cliff due to the pandemic; that the oil industry in Aberdeen is in decline; and that the hotel has a massive reconstruction project going on outside its front door which appears to have no known completion date, I find it hard to be overly critical. Old hotel buildings which have been chopped and changed over the years and are in dire need of new plumbing, new electrics, new furniture (my mattress was a bit lumpy), complete re-decoration and an extended car park at a minimum must be a huge dilemma for hotel giants like Accor. How far do they risk their reputations and standards coming into question? I've stayed in Movenpicks and Sofitels, both Accor --and it's a bit of a contrast! In an ideal world, this beautiful Victorian lady which I know is hiding under all the 20th century conversion joinery and plasterboard, should be fully restored to dominate Union Terrace Gardens for years to come, but that's a multi-million pound project now and I can't see the return on investment. You might persuade the SNP government into a massive grant; they've invested in plenty of projects crazier than this. Great service, though and, for what I paid, value for money. Good luck and long live "the Cally".

hotel a bit tired

difficult times i know with covid but staff shortages apparent at reception, bar and dining room also surrounded by one great building site at union terrace gardens, not mentioned when booked, noisy bar music from belmont street pubs until 2am spoilt our trip down memory lane ,having been students in aberdeen 50 years ago

Have stayed at the Mercure Caledonian before, but this was my first night(s) away from home since March 2020 and I was naturally hesitant and uneasy about the experience. I was soon put at ease. The welcome was as good as before and there were plenty of measures in place throughout the hotel to reduce the risk of Covid infection. The room was comfortable, the breakfast excellent and the staff welcoming and friendly. With its good city-centre location, the Caley is perfect for a midweek break.

Although the interior does need some refurbishment/updating this is more than made up by the very helpful and friendly staff. One criticism was the somewhat limited menu for evening meals. However I understand this was mainly due to Covid restrictions.

Dear Guest, Thank you for your feedback. I am pleased to note that you enjoyed your stay with us and that the staff were very helpful and friendly. We look forward to welcoming you back to the hotel in the near future for another enjoyable experience . Kind regards, Peter Brand

Glad the hotel had reopened for key workers on essential business. A limited room service menu was available with soft drinks only, but no gluten free options. A cereal-based breakfast was also an option. Co-op food-store along the road. Service. as always, was excellent, lovely ladies behind the perspex screens, welcoming and friendly.

Hi Bill, thank you for sharing your feedback with us. Glad to note that the team looked after you well. we do have gluten free options available on request. we look forward to welcoming you back to the hotel in the near future for an enjoyable experience. Warm regards, Aamir Mir

Lovely staff

I was offered if I would like my breakfast cooked separately as I am coeliac. Joy, no cross contamination risk. Staff were lovely, hotel is pleasant. The only downside was some sort of club playing very loud music till very late, they were based on the other side of the gardens. Hence a low score for sleep quality.

Thank you for your feedback. I am pleased to note that you had an enjoyable stay with us and the team catered well for your specific dietary requirements. We look forward to welcoming you back to the hotel in the near future for another enjoyable and memorable experience. Warm Regards, Aamir Mir

Overnight Stay

Booked this hotel for 1 night. Perfect location, 10 minutes from train and bus station and near to the theatre and shopping centres. Lovely old fashioned hotel. Some parts in need of an update. Warm welcome from reception staff. Room was good size but a bit dusty in places. Bathroom had a decent shower. We had breakfast included. There was a good selection - full fry up, fruit, cereals, croissants, toast and fresh pancakes. Only one member of staff and she wasn’t very friendly. When we came in all she said was ‘room number’! No welcome from her. We had never stayed before so had to ask if we could sit anywhere and where the food was. This is part of the welcome in every other hotel we’ve stayed in. While we were getting our food she barked ‘ tea or coffee’ and mugs were on the table when we sat down. She then disappeared and there was no chance of a refill. I’ve been quite generous with the 4 out of 5 but it was really just this one member of staff who let the hotel down. Not sure if I would stay again because of this.

Dear Guest, thank you for your feedback. I am please to note that you liked the hotel and the breakfast on offer. I am genuinely very sorry re the issues experienced with the service at breakfast. this is very uncharacteristic from the team here and rest assured, i have already addressed this with the team. i do hope we will have an opportunity to welcome you back to the hotel in the near future so that we can showcase our service which we pride ourselves in. Warm Regards, Aamir Mir

We had an excellent stay for 3 nights and enjoyed it very much. Standard up to what we have come to expect at this hotel. The meal on Hogmanay was first class and all seemed to go according to plan. Dinner in the hotel on New Years evening was also excellent and the service for the whole visit was outstanding.

Dear Alex, Thank you sharing your feedback with us. super buzzed to note that you had an excellent Hogmanay stay with us and you enjoyed the meal and service on offer. we look forward to welcoming you back to the hotel in the near future for another memorable stay. Warm Regards, Aamir Mir
