Dinner was an issue
3anita Couples - 09/12/2019 TripAdvisor review
We had a lovely stay and would have given this property a score of five but had an issue with a dinner reservation. I booked the dinner reservation several weeks before our stay and also checked the reservation when we arrived. There were signs up explaining that there were Christmas functions on which could mean an increase in noise until 1.00a.m. We were not however told that we would not be able to have dinner in the restaurant and the notices in the lift advertised the restaurant as being open. On the night in question we went into the bar to have a pre-dinner drink only to be asked which table we would like to sit at which confused us as we were expecting to go through to the restaurant. There was in fact only one table that was not covered in glasses and that was by the door where Christmas party guests were coming in and out. There was also only a bistro menu available. It was a shame this happened, had we been advised when we made the dinner reservation that the restaurant was not available we would have made the reservation for the first night we were there and not the last. I would still recommend this hotel for comfort, location and facilities.

Although The Rougemont is perfectly adequate, having known it in the past, it has gone down-market. No doubt this is what suits the group, but it did not suit me as a private, non-corporate guest. I had expected something better from a once grand Victorian watering hole. The food appears to be bog standard and nowhere in the hotel itself can you buy a decent pint of real ale. I was disappointed and shall not stay there again.
Cold, noisey, dirty left tired instead of refreshed

Upgraded to suite - sadly over ballroom with party in; noise above legal levels allowed in public, no sleep until gone 1.30am - guests standing outside hotel entrance smoking where making lots of noise which would have potentially woken all guests with rooms at front especially for period after 1am when leaving - no attempt by staff monitoring this. Sink in bathroom broken, four poster bead had dust all over frame, filthy underneath with rubbish as well as dirt. TV partially obscured by one of posts of bed. No coffee pods unless you wanted decaf. Only one set of shampoo etc despite 2 guests. No bottled water, no writing paper, poorly stocked fridge (4 soft drinks only), bath towels the size of hand towels and shower plug hole had so much hair it didn't empty properly. Left it envelope and given to reception who were shocked. Reception area was cold to the point you needed a coat to sit there and at about 6.30pm there was only one person on bar duty (had been 3 earlier across both bars) people waiting a long time to get served and were complaining amongst themselves. I had a free drinks voucher which I couldn't spend as couldn't get serve and wen tout elsewhere as not worth the wait. Some staff looked scruffy and unkempt. Only good thing was reception staff here were lovely.
Breakfast good, room clean, staff great

Good experience although we were on 4th floor and there was no direct lift to it. The 4th floor corridor was a bit tired but room was good. Breakfast was good Staff very accommodating Some noise from events, no notification about this was given when we booked or arrived, just a notice in the lift later that day.
