We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, as always, apart from the noise from the street, well into the early hours. Bars are close by and all the bikers seemed to be visiting 'Angels' the nights we were there,. It was a very hot couple of days, so we had no option, but to keep the windows open. A fan would have been a help.

The staff at check in were very helpful and efficient. I took the offer of an upgrade as my wife was travelling with me and i wanted her to enjoy a more luxurious stay as we have stayed at several mercure properties in the past. The room was extremley dissapointing. There was a large patch of damp cieling with paint and plaster hanging off. There was a light bulb out . The carpet was very stained. The extractor fan in the bathroom wasnt working. There were stains and marks on all walls. There was disguting black grime all round the seal in the bath and behind the taps. The board beside the bath was swollen with damp and a large patch with no paint on it. The bathroom was infested with small brown moths which probably bred on the exposed hardboard on the bath. The wall paper was peeling back on most seams. There was cigarette ash on the window sill. I have pictures of all of these faults and i let the receptionist know when i left. To be honest i was absolutley digusted by the room. I would be interested to hear your thoughts .07…

The hotel is lovely, great location in terms of train station, walking to pubs, restaurants, shops etc. A little disappointed that you have to pay £12 to park your car (each car) on top of the room rate.

Friendly staff on reception even remembered my preferred room from my previous hotel stays. Had the Thai green curry from the in house food menu. Really tasty and a good portion. Great nights sleep

We had a lovely stay whilst moving my son to university, although we were very busy taking his belongings to his new address it was lovely to get back to the hotel which was about 2minutes away. The hotel room was really clean and well presented and breakfast was lovely even though we had to pick it up at reception to take to our room bcuz of covid restrictions which we didn't mind doing at all. Staff were very approachable and friendly and we will definitely be returning to stay there again and would highly recommend friends and family to stay here too.

Unhelpful and rude Reception staff. Hotel food awful. Expected to carry my large food tray up to my room on my own. Safety hazard to say the least. Overall an unpleasant stay.

Good welcome. Very surprised to have to pay for parking-not mentioned when booking. Room okay but very cold due to boiler breakdown. This was reported to reception who promised a mobile heater if the boiler could not be repaired- this was not received and room remained cold during whole stay. Disappointed with breakfast - choice very poor, food cold and overpriced at £10 each.

I was made very welcome the concierge was very friendly, she remembered my name throughout my stay. The Christmas decorations and original features of the building were enchanting, beautifully enhanced, not too themed. The concierge told me the history of the building and provided local information that was really useful. The room appeared to be recently renovated; it was very clean, comfortable and well presented. My only criticism was that the walls were paper thin, consideration to some, any kind of sound proofing would have been money well spent during the refurbishment. I could here everything happening in adjoining rooms, even with ear plugs and the TV turned up. Maybe in times of reduced occupancy every other room could be occupied.

Good stay. Great staff, especially Christmas Eve, Day & Boxing Day. Many thanks to them. The room was one we specifically asked not to stay in, plus seriously cracked sink, clearly not properly cleaned for some time and set up for one not two people. We remained in it as we liked its size, location and semi-partition and staff helped resolve many of the difficulties.

The room and linen were clean, however one could smell someone had smoked in there recently, also there were cigarette butts on the windowsill. I was lucky enough to have a bath in my room which was lovely, however the silicone around the bath and shower just needs re-doing - it would be a little thing to maintain that would really make a big difference to the overall look of the bathroom. The location is really good though, and I did enjoy my stay overall.

We stayed here in 2019 as a base for exploring the surrounding area and had a great time and had no complaints about the hotel or service. This year was very different and whilst it is a very different world we live in right now and the staff were clearly trying their best in an unprecedented situation, it was the little things that, for us, let he hotel down. When we booked, there was no mention (on the website) that the great buffet breakfast we had last year was now replaced with a 'continental' doggie-bag. Whilst we were there, lots of guests cancelled and asked for the breakfast charge to be refunded because the quality of that continental doggie-bag was poor - certainly not 4* quality regardless of the Covid situation. You could tell from the receptionist response that they were used to people asking to cancel it. On our penultimate day a choice of bacon or sausage bap was added to the continental doggie-bag. Sadly the rolls were dry as a bone and not even buttered. We had a 'privilege' room which was supposed to include free soft drinks from the fridge but we were told that this had been withdrawn 'because of Covid'. I think this was more about cost-cutting (understandable in the circumstances) but again this was not on the website and not what you expect from a 4* hotel. Other minor issues include shower leaking over bathroom floor and slowly rotting bath surround, peeling ceilings, phone in room didn't work, toilet flush broken when we checked in (fixed within a day by maintenance), lack of tea and coffee supplies - you could replenish these yourself from the reception, but it was pretty much empty every day. We only saw 3 staff during our stay - all front of house - they were as helpful as they could possibly be and were clearly doing multiple jobs owing to reduce staff numbers. Had it not been for them the review would be far worse. Ok, so it is a different world and staff are trying hard in a very different way of operating. I come from a service industry background and rarely grumble because I have seen it from the other side, but we were very disappointed and will unlikely stay here again. For what we paid, we could have stayed at a Travelodge because that is pretty much what it felt like. Certainly not a 4* Lastly - nothing the hotel can do about this but the seagulls nesting outside are a nightmare and made for some of the worst nights sleep I have ever experienced in a hotel!

Lovely hotel, nothing to complain about other than the creaky floors! i could hear and feel my neighbours walking around and the corridor was terrible. Appreciate this is an old building but the floorboards do need attantion. Really odd detail in shower - the screen/shower head was over the bath at the other end of the loo which made it VERY difficult to get into, water leaked out of side of screen and flooded the bathroom also.
