This hotel is an architectural jewel in the centre of the old town in Luang Prabang. We stayed in the Auguste Pavie Suite overlooking the main street, along which the monks process in the early morning alms-giving ceremony. Seeing this from such a position was a great privilege that was worth far more than money can buy. The hotel is built around three exquisite listed buildings that contain only 15 guest rooms. It is therefore not blighted by the group tourism that now affects many other hotels in Luang Prabang. There is a more than decent bar with a fantastic saxophonist who plays every night. The restaurant is also excellent and offers a particularly fine breakfast. What makes a hotel excellent rather than just good is the staff. And the staff here are exemplary. While it is perhaps not fair to single out any one person, we were particularly enthralled by the charming and articulate Nouy who explained to us the non-Buddhist religion of her village on Route 13 in the direction of Kiewkacham. As a listed inner-city property, this hotel does not possess a swimming pool, but this facility and others are provided by the sister Sofitel hotel which is accessed by a regular shuttle service. We did not use the pool because that is not why we came to Luang Prabang. We enjoyed our stay so much that we will definitely return in April/May next year.

Located in the heart of old town, 5 min walk to confluence of rivers at end of peninsula or to night market headed inland. Accommodation is a traditional Lao building renovated with modern bathroom, air conditioning, 4 poster bed, and 360’ mosquito net. Staff were friendly, professional, and had a good grasp of English. Our staff team were Ning, Linda, Pookie, and Nouy. The groundskeeper Mr Thongvan was also very friendly and greeted us every morning with a smile. The complimentary breakfast offers local fare and western options. The hotel bar has an awesome selection of custom cocktails, which I will definitely try to recreate at home

Pay more and stay at the Sofitel

This was our least favorite hotel on our Asia tour. Book at the Sofitel rather. The rooms were not up to par and had noises played etc above our head through the night. The breakfast was across the rd and the rooms were hot. There was creepy crawly in the bathtub, awful caulking and just pay more and stay elsewhere. Only plus was a quick walk to the night market.
