I was very disappointed with this hotel for the price that we paid- I felt like I was staying in a slightly glorified student accommodation. The shower was mouldy and bathroom stuffy. There were only 3 seats at the dining table instead of four. Some of the cutlery/plates were dirty or missing and the cooking utensils/pots/pans etc… basic. The sofas were stained and very small ; no armrests at each end and they were not long enough to lay down on. The air conditioner unit (located in an accessible cupboard off the bathroom) was very noisy. We were located on the 2nd floor (of about 10) so the view of the harbour wasn’t that great compared to the upper levels. However the staff were friendly, bed and pillows comfy. The room was quiet from outside noise. The foyer was spacious and smelt amazing. The location is great and parking at the hotel was reasonably priced.

Room was clean and tidy, however had overpowering smell of damp. Tried to clear this by using air con, then by opening window, however smell remained. If I had been staying more than one night, I would have requested a different room.

The only issues I had problems with was when I phoned the advertised number to book and pressed the selection for reservations the day before the intended stay, no one answered so I gave up after about 8 minutes. I had to then phone the next morning being the day of intended stay and did not know if there was vacancy or whether I would have to look elsewhere. I had the same problem so hung up after 5 minutes and phoned again and pressed the other selection for reception and had to wait another 5 minutes before anyone picked up but they helped me and booked me in. Check in was very slow and only one on front desk so some delay.

I don’t write bad reviews and ALWAYS write good ones when someone or a business deserves to be recognised! This is the exception because when you get poor treatment it needs to be brought to someone’s attention and in this case someone within the organisation who can actual respond sensibility or lose our business and with it the multitude of people we will talk to about our trip and where we staying in Cairns. We arrived at 9.00am and check in was at 2.00pm. We asked if we could have an earlier check-in and were denied. The person who was at reception didn’t budge. No exception. We asked if a room becomes available could they call us. We never received a call. We spent the next 5 hours wandering around Cairns in 34° tropical heat in our travelling clothes walking through town and looking for somewhere to escape the heat. This was always our favourite hotel over an 8 years span and this being our 4th or 5th stay here. What we just experienced is probably the worst front of house management culture in a hotel. This is why. It is low season in Cairns. The city was extremely quiet; Hotels, restaurants, tours, transportation, and shops were EMPTY. We saw with our own eyes an heard from every service industry person we spoke with. So back to this management. This is a hospitality industry not an administration business. Our reception to Cairns was a robotic lecture on how the room is not available, and house keeping will have to get the room ready and it and won’t be ready until 2.00pm. Check out is at 11.00 and the room won’t be really until 2.00pm??? You have 2 multiple repeat clients arrive and it is extremely quiet an extremely hot outside and no effort was made to get us in. Let’s go back to our booking. We prepaid almost a month in advance direct to the hotel. You have our money already. A 2.00pm check-in maybe standard but rarely enforced. We understood the room may not be ready but as soon as we saw how no effort was made to try, it was deflating. Our bags are in the hotels custody and we have to find somewhere to go. We were okay with a few hours but precisely 2.00pm. 5 hours after we signed in! You need to take the USA approach: Welcome back, yes Sir we’ll get to it right alway, leave it with me and see what we can do. Our request wasn’t a demanding one but a very human one. Sitting at a nearby restaurant at 1.50pm we called to see how things progressed and we were told they weren’t sure it was ready and we can come to the hotel and wait in the foyer until 2.00pm. For some reason they would rather see a hot and bothered customer then make a customer service decision to welcome and accomodate their patrons by getting us in even a tad bit earlier. The next part is very borderline infringing on the privacy act. We had 2 different receptionist/managers approach us at check in and tell us they have no record of us staying at the hotel previously. So this tells me they have had a discussion about us and were discussing the validity of our previous stay. These three should stop the back of house investigations and go to back to hospitality training. The room was booked in my name. Previous visits it was booked in my wife’s name. Does it really matter! I could have shown then holiday photos in the rooms from previous trips. We never got acknowledge by the original receptionist. That alone may have eased our discomfort and maybe our opinion. By not being recognised, no effort or concern only made my opinion fester! We stayed 6 nights and we rarely saw other patrons. Barely a person in the lobby, the elevator, the pool or in the corridors. We spent a lot of time in and around the hotel and amazingly the room actually gets a visit from housekeeping daily around 10.00 am...Not 2.00pm. The first receptionist avoided the site of us. Strange, because there was never another exchange of words but she knew we weren’t impressed. Poor culture is what I attribute to the management of this hotel. It starts at the top. I was a previously Accor member and had to sign up again since It was probably 15+ years ago and is not something I rarely care about because I use many different hotels when travelling but for Cairns it was always Harbourlights for its location. This is not our last trip to Cairns. I work seasonly here and also visit my son here. This trip left an ever lasting bitter taste toward this hotel. Had always loved it, but this time some of the staff made it my least favourite. Want names?...Just ask.

I have had a look at your reservation to get a better understanding of what has occurred, as I was shocked and dissapointed hearing of your experience Looking at your reservation I can see that the area that we have failed you most in is in communication. We had a strong request for certain attributes for your room - high floor and certain room number if this was possible. The team had been able to allocate the perfect room for you about an hour prior to your arrival. There are only 4 rooms in the hotel that met all of your the room allocation requests, and we were able to allocate one of these to you. This is possibly why they seamed not to try to get you in at the time of your arrival. They knew that you were in the best room possible on that day. This should have been communicated to you, and offered you a vacant room on a lower floor as an alternative to making you wait. Your room, unfortunately was still occupied at the time of your arrival and we do need to make sure that they are cleaned and perfect for our next guests. I am so sorry that this marred your stay. I will absolutely be working with the team on this as it so important for all of our guests to feel welcomed and valued not just on their arrival but at all times throughout their stay. Nice room good views. Bar fridge freezer needed defrosting. To much hotel goods in fridge. No room for purchased items in fridge without removing hotel goods. We like to have some meals in apartment.

I had a couple of safety/health issues and a couple of interactions that were not up to par. First, I was unable to get out of the pool area and used the emergency phone. The response at the other end did not acknowledge the "emergency." I did comment about it. Someone did come up to let me out, but immediately proceeded to pretty much put the blame on me, because I didn't use the right pathway, even though there were no signs or communications that would have alerted me. The jacuzzi has no handle to get in. The night I went in, a gentleman was in it and told me he fell in. The jacuzzi also had no hot water. I mentioned this to the person who helped me get out of the locked pool area and was told "this is Australia." I explained that doesn't matter. I've been in hotter places and that's always a characteristic of the jacuzzi: hot water. In any event, I did not get to enjoy it. Finally, I had asked for courtesy late check-out and there was a complete reluctance to accommodate me, even after these incidents.

Pool area was not inviting. Room was spacious but lounge and chairs were not comfortable. Shower in bathroom had mould which was attended to when we reported it but it would have been preventable with regular cleaning. Comment was that it was a grouting problem and would need a full maintenance job.

There’s a pool, a gym and sauna. Not many people use them so it’s good. The room was big. Only downside was the wifi which was not working on the first two days.

Location was great, daily room cleaning from all staff was quick and very efficient ,Sharon was exceptionally appreciated not only in understanding our situation but also representing Harbour Lights in general in presenting sympathy flowers and a card to my wife and family for the sad loss of our niece. Greg at reception was also very understanding and helpful. Without hesitation we would stay again (hopefully in better times) and highly recommend Cairns Harbour Light Hotel to all travellers
