Tiny beds and a bad smell

Customer review rating 1.5/5

The room smelled so badly of cover up sprays and chemicals we had to change rooms. The desk even came up to check and said that is was unacceptable. The beds are so narrow your knees will hang over the edge if you sleep on your side.

Large Room, Good Value

Jason F Couples - TripAdvisor review

The room was large and had plenty of room for everything. The view was excellent with a large window. The bed was a bit of an issue. It was merely a futon with a mattress pad. It was very uncomfortable. I wasn't a fan of the bathroom pod, but it was completely functional. My main gripe was the uncomfortable bed. Otherwise, the staff were friendly, and the accommodations were great. It was a great value in a fantastic location. Would stay here again.

TISSUEHANKIE TripAdvisor review

Booked this hotel as a central base to do a 4 night stay in Edinburgh. The location is perfect centrally positioned just minutes from the royal Mile and all the attractions, mid way between the castle and Holyrood house and all the usual touristy sites and attractions. Just a few minutes from a Tesco Express and a Sainsbury's local and Costa coffee. Just A few minutes walk away from the Museum (Lewis Chesspieces (used in Harry Potter and Philosophers stone) and Greyfriar's Cemetery where the Potter, Moodie and Tom Riddle graves are to be found and Greyfriars Bobby Statue, Diagon Alley (Princess street) and St Giles Cathedral. Edinburgh is a Harry Potter fan's joy !! Reception check in was very swift and we had emailed ahead for a twin in a quiet area of the hotel which we were given in room 724. The room was very basic with Kettle tea mini milk etc a Hairdryer, large Flat screen TV ,The en suite 'Pod' served its purpose and the shower was a good size with complimentary shower gel and shampoo, and hand gel on the hand basin. we did have only 2 large bath towels but if you go to reception they will give you more towels when ever you want and one night we asked for some more and they had run out but within a few minutes they delivered them to the room . Storage was in an open unit with a hanging rail and shelves not quite large enough for 2 females clothes good job I took extra coat hangers with us . Also there are no large hooks in the room to hang coats on which might be an idea to add some in ?? One issue with the room and en-suite is there is no ventilation - no windows can be opened and there is no extractor fan in the bathroom consequently there is a huge amount of condensation in the room which makes the room feel damp. This is something that needs addressing urgently as the standard lamp is rusting and there are damp patches appearing on the wall. I feel the cold and asked if I could have an extra duvet and they brought one to the room again very quickly. There is an air con unit which you can use for heating if you adjust the thermostat but it does take a while to warm the room so leave it on whilst you're out for the day and it will be fine once you get back. The 'maid' service was very good and the room reasonably clean ( could have done with some decorating and repair to en suite door ) although under the bed was a bit dusty as I found out when I took my case from under the bed to pack ! Breakfast is a buffet service serving cooked items Bacon, sausage, Haggis, Scrambled eggs, Baked beans, fresh tomatoes, mushrooms, Hash browns. You can make your own toast , continental selection of cheese and meats etc and yoghurt with fruits such as prunes, grapefruit, prunes and mixed berries. there is Crusty breads and little cakes and croissants etc. Tea and coffee are served from a machine but it is real ground coffee and was very nice. Our biggest complaint was that the hot food was luke warm at best and there was no microwave to heat it up. It can get very very busy at around 9 am so best to try and get there early as possible although we always found a table somewhere . The bar and restaurant served a wide selection of drinks and food at night and we ate there twice and both times the food was very good, reasonably priced and the service was excellent from all the staff. There are settees in the bar area as well to relax at night. All the staff were very polite and provided excellent service other than one young waitress (in breakfast with dark hair ) who took our breakfast and drinks away whilst I'd gone to get more butter. She very abruptly told me I should have left something on the table to indicate we were still eating. I said I did ........... 2 full cups of coffee and half a breakfast !!! :( There was No apology from her and she was very abrupt - could do with training in customer service !! Reception also stock teabags, coffee sachets, milk and sugar if you run out in your room. When leaving , if you require luggage storage they offer it at reception and also they have direct contact for taxi bookings which is very efficient. You ask them for a taxi and are given a booking number then go outside and the driver arrives for you and checks your booking no. This by no means a plush 5 star hotel and warrants its 3 star rating but for a central base, offering clean accommodation with very friendly staff offering good service it certainly met the brief. We booked with Easyjet - flights and accommodation from the Midlands and for what we paid for B and B for 4 nights including the flights was excellent value and much cheaper than booking direct with the hotel.
