Friendly staff who seemed to have little training. Food was not up to standard expected.

A lovely experience

Our experience was enhanced by your wonderful staff. Everyone went out of their way to make us welcome, especially the Spanish waiter in the restaurant who looked after us extremely well. The front desk staff and the bar staff were also particularly good. The food in your restaurant was excellent, always freshly cooked. The rural hotel setting is lovely, peacefully placed amongst the trees.

Poor Experience

Mr W. D. Business - 10/09/2021 Confirmed reviews ALL

When we arrived, we were greeted by the front desk staff who were pleasantly courteous. When we entered the room, we noticed an unpleasant stale smell. We tracked this down to the waste paper bin which still had the remains of a takeaway cream cake. I had to ask the staff to have it removed. The room was poorly laid out with an oversized king bed which was off centre leaving little room to move manoeuvre at one side. There was also a shelf on this side with a hair dryer making more difficult. There were no bedside tables and only one chair. The lighting in the bathroom was dim making shaving a challenge. The standard of cleanliness in the bathroom was questionable with dried soap around the taps and shower controls.

Village located, spacious, friendly, need for refurbishment adds to the charm

LeClubMember99 10/09/2021 TripAdvisor review

I have stayed here annually for decades, primarily because the precise location suits my purposes. The hotel, particularly the exterior including the gardens, is in need of refurbishment, but they ae dependant on whatever income they can get from events such as weddings, and from accommodation. The staff are friendly and helpful, the hotel is airy and spacious, the cooked breakfast is one of the best I have had in my worldwide travels. Choose the Garden View rooms as they have recently been fully refurbished. The staff coped well in the context of Covid, my only comment is that serving utensils for cereals, juices etc. were shared - and no guest or staff wore masks . One thing they abandoned a few years ago is the choice of kippers for breakfast - please bring them back!

Dear LeClubMember99 Thank you for your review. Always a pleasure to read that you have enjoyed your stay and I hope the same for many years to come. best wishes

Friendly, village located, traditional hotel, surviving Covid challenges

I have happily stayed here annually for decades including before it took the Accor-Mercure brand, primarily because of its precise location, but also because of its traditional country hotel feel and informal friendly staff. Its not a luxurious big city hotel, nor a bland budget hotel, and it could do with significant refurbishment particularly externally, but that's all part of the charm and they can only upgrade an old building with what they can earn on events such as weddings, and on accommodation. Their hot, cooked to order breakfast is one of the best I have encountered on my worldwide travels as an AccorAI member. As to Covid risks, they had gone to the trouble of individually wrapping slices of bread for the DIY toaster, but I was less happy that cereals, juices etc were buffet style with shared utensils and jugs - explained as 'we can only do so much' . Staff, working in challenging times and in limited numbers, were as friendly as usual. TIP 1 - My pre-visit email enquiry was never answered - presumably a resourcing issue, I recommend phoning with such queries. TIP 2 - The Garden View rooms have recently been refurbished.

Staying at the Mercury for the weekend when attending functions at the National Memorial Arboretum proved to be an excellent choice. The staff were friendly and efficient, the food Wes very very good and the surroundings were brilliant for me

A bit out of the way, but set in lovely country area.

A nice old hotel, (emphasis on the old), sadly now showing the signs, could well do with a facelift to brighten the place up. Rooms were more than adequate, large, clean and well stocked. Sadly the meal we had was very disappointing, never in this world was it worth 25 pounds a head. Bar prices were were far too high, 5 pound 50 for a pint of Shandy, those are London prices, not a hotel out in the sticks.

Really nice.

Staff are friendly but the hotel itself is in need of updating. We had a suite which was a good size and the bed comfortable with a bright pink modern headboard that clashed with the red floral curtains. The bathroom was simply dreadful the toilet was so close to the bath you could only sit on it sideways unless you have very short legs !!! The breakfast was hit and miss poor the first day better the second. Slightly put off by the guests dog that pooed on the hall carpet with the stains still very visible the next day.. not good.

Dated rooms and no hot water in the shower

Mick Couples - 01/09/2021 Confirmed reviews ALL

Friendly staff, main parts of hotel were OK. Bedrooms are dated. Bathrooms were old and scruffy with taped up electrics on the towel rail and no hot water for the shower. We changed rooms and the experience was the same. Scruffy and again just a cold shower

The hotel had deteriorated significantly

Not good...from being given the wrong room after unpacking and having to move to noticing deterioration of breakfast eg. Get your own tea

Small stuffy rooms.

Whilst the venue is located in beautiful gardens in a lovely village the room itself was a box with poor ventilation. Interior was drab, en-suite you couldn’t turn around in so had to dry off from the shower in the bedroom it’s self. The fan from en-suite was so loud and stayed on for that long it was a headache. No fridge. Sparce tv channels and unfortunately we stayed the same night at the function room being used, with appear thin walls we was disturbed by the music played into the early hours. Over all we wouldn’t use this hotel again as do not feel at all value for money.

Amazing potential though underwhelmed

We chose to stay here for 2 nights whilst incorporating a family trip to Alton Towers. We decided to go for a Mercure Hotel instead of the normal Premier Inn to treat ourselves after lockdown , only to end up pretty underwhelmed . On arrival the hotel looks amazing in a beautiful location but pulling up to it you can see it needs a good external clean , the rusty downpipe replacing/painted and the overflowing bin emptied . We then booked in only for my 2 daughters to be given a disgusting room number 6 . It stank of mould , smoke and cleaning products which was ironic considering the skirting boards where covered in black grime ? The staff quickly and efficiently changed the room only to find the sheets in the new room and ours were both stained, again quickly and efficiently changed . The electrics in the girls room number 107 were also a bit sporadic and the hairdryer in our room 101 didn’t work . Also in room 101 it opens up over the bar exit so we got a lovely waft of cigarette smoke and slightly louder conversation the later the evening goes on . To top it off I ended up having to park my new car under a tree and on booking out found it covered in sap and literally hundreds of wasps which took ages to get off before we could get in the car and a £12 bill to get it cleaned. This hotel is potentially amazing but even the amazing stained glass window at the top of the very grand stairs had a small pane smashed at childs hand height ? It’s saving grace is the staff who do their best under the circumstances although they do with some uniform you can’t always tell if they work there . Having stayed in Mercure Hotels previously this one is along way behind some of the newer more Central / City Hotels . Your thoughts would be appreciated?

Well located

A most enjoyable stay

Mark S 30/08/2021 TripAdvisor review

I really enjoyed my one-night stay at this hotel which has a lot of characer. In fairness, the place would benefit from some investment but it was a lovely location right next to the village of Willington set in lovely countryside. The Hotel has a lovely garden at the rear and it was great to walk around there on a sunny day with a glass of wine. There are lots of period features including wood-panelling and some of the grandeur of the past. The food was excellent at both dinner and breakfast - and there was plenty of it! The reception team was very friendly and helpful - Toby and newly-recruited Kristina(sp?) really took care of me. Mark and Jose on the bar were brilliant as were the other members of the catering team.

Dear Mark S Thank you for your lovely review. Really pleased to say that our team made your stay a great one. We look forward to welcoming you in the near future. with kind regards

Beautiful old building and grounds but desperately in need of a gardener! Middle of summer and more weeds than plants/flowers. A grand property with potential that just seems to be neglected. Stayed in room 224(?). Very stuffy. No air con (too modern for the old building) Had the window open but midges came into the room. Pleasant staff but would have liked more information provided on arrival i.e times of breakfast, location of restaurant, bar etc. No info in room. So kept having to ask questions. Sat outside for a drink around 5:30pm and then the external bar/lounge door was closed on us. So had to walk around to the front of the the hotel, through reception and back into the bar. Perhaps bar staff could have just popped over to tell us what they were doing so we could go back through the door. Just a suggestion. Facilities don’t seem to represent a 4 star hotel. I have stayed in 3 star with more facilities and services. I think the house/building itself commands a 4 star hotel but definitely not what Mecure offer inside.
