The rooms need upgrading, look tired. From the outside it looks a grand hotel but the hotel rooms don’t match your expectations. Breakfast was nice Early morning fire alarm was not welcome especially when I was bitten & been ill all week because of it and my foot/ankle is still not right.

Beautiful but not clean

We came and Altho the building is beautiful with lots of history we was in room 202 and it’s was ran down there wa sticky marks all over the walls which could have been cleaned and then in the shower red marks all over the ceiling it looked as tho some one threw ketchup up, the desk staff went to clean it but informed us there was no more rooms available, walking up out room we went past several large cobwebs with dead flys in needless to say we did not eat here we came as a get away for my husband and I the first time 4 years with out the children after an crazy year of losing people him in the military and myself owning my own business as much as the building is beautiful the inside was not

I’ve never been this hot in my life! No air con, not well ventilated, lack of plug sockets in a family room. Staff were super helpful and friendly. Garden is very pretty but slabs need looking at as a little dangerous.

In need of refurbishment

I booked a privilege room- 101- the windows would not remain open- I was tolls it was a safety feature but the temperature was 30 degrees- no fans were available. The paint was peeling, the carpet old, the bathroom was tiny. No robe or slippers or nespresso machine as advertised in a privilege room. The room needs re painting and the bathroom needs upgrading- poky, Small and dark. The staircases and communal areas are dark and look tired and old. The only reason I remained was the location near Repton school. Overall I was very unimpressed with the hotel

Lovely location.

Definitely not a 4☆ as adverised. More like 2☆ Very neglected beautiful building. Such a shame. Did not use restaurant as felt overpriced. Our bedding was clean, room very dated. The overall cleanliness of hotel was very poor. No aircon and very small fan in room. Never again.

Poor standards in most things

Well first room had no bath, and should have ( wife requires it). Second room had bath but no, seriously no, hot water flow so impossible to fill. Third room ok, bath worked, but both bath and shower very inaccessible for elderly. Bed was not made on day two. All carpets threadbare, towels left on narrow stairs, lift not working, gardens an absolute mess. Minimal staff, but they were pleasant and helpful. This is far from the claimed 4 star. Pretty terrible, but nice area.

Two nights around a family wedding. All staff very friendly and helpful. Neither of us particularly large people, we found the access to both shower and wc rather awkward .but the view from the window was a delight. Entrance hall and stairs and dining room have lovely old features.

Staff and service excellent hotel dated

The staff were very attentive but the rooms need an update. No air conditioning in the rooms, bathroom decor were from the 80’s with a poor shower and rust marks in the bath.

An enjoyable stay in a pleasant location

We stayed for three night mini break and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The hotel served our needs well, a comfortable room (air conditioning would have been good), pleasant and helpful staff, a decent breakfast, well located for sightseeing in the area and a pub just down the road if you like a pint of Burton beer.

Good stay and well located

Had a voucher for a dog friendly stay. Room was a bit dated but spacious, clean and comfortable. Staff were all nice. We weren’t able to bring our dog into the breakfast room but she could sit in the bar area with us instead. Breakfast time was very busy but the staff were working really hard so we were still served quickly.

Good stay

where do I begin? Booked as a gift from our teenage daughters for our 25th wedding anniversary - delayed by 12 months due to COVID-19 This hotel is apparently 4 star!! So we are given room 207, first impression, good size room but then you look around. Bedside cabinet falling part, drawer angled off runners and cabinet base broken, wallpaper dirty, peeling but there’s a kettle (dont want to use that!). The bathroom, dated, maybe 207 is the years since last redecorated, not just the room number. The shower appears to be held together by silicon, so much around the fitting it’s hard to believe there is room to fit in there too ! Bed was clean So after a few hours traveling, had a short lie down, but the rooms getting warmer and warmer even with the window open. Check the radiator, it’s not on but the 2” pipe feeding it is burning hot - this pipe runs around two walls (who needs a radiator), it’s July and 20deg outside. Asked if there was another room available, after two minutes of checking what was available in a 70% empty hotel, we was offered room 115 This room was half the size but a bit cleaner and less dated, about 1975! Radiator pipe is cold, so some improvement, or so we thought Bathroom is clean and ok, considering what we left behind We went out for dinner leaving the window open to keep the room cool On return, the room is warm and smells of a kitchen, just below the window is the extractor ducting vent from the kitchen with the smells and heat coming straight into our room, cue 3 hours sleep as the extractor kicks in, or tries to start up a number of times Maybe this was the reason it took so long to find us another room, looking for the one with the worst options - it certainly felt that way On the plus side, breakfast was nice, although we needed to work out the times and location for ourself. I have never been to a Hotel where this information was not given at the time of checking in Having stayed in every level of B&B to 5 star hotels over 50 years, I can safely say this is the worst I have ever stayed in, worse that £8 per night Blackpool B&Bs in the 80’s A delayed celebration ruined, we are devastated

Well located is fine, good stay doesn't work for us

Unhappy. The smallest of double rooms you can imagine, not even space along one side of the bed for a small cabinet, in fact it was difficult to walk it was so close to the wall. no lift so a climb of 40 steps every time. tea and coffee not filled up, not ordinary tea bags at all. Only one chair for 2 people, the tv remote didn't work, there was no anti slip mat in the bath despite the warning sticker on the wall telling us to use it.....does that give you an idea?

Lovely hotel and well situated to visit the Peak District.

Easy check in and well looked after by Briddie who solved our room problem very quickly and efficiently. She is a true credit to your hotel. Please pass my comments on to her.

Rooms Could Be Nicer

I received a friendly welcome, but I feel that the rooms could have been nicer. From the oppressive art on the walls to the scruffy furniture, I don't think it wouldn't take much to elevate this hotel.

Grand old country house in a lovely place, but the hotel has seen better days and is in serious need of refurbishment. Worn carpets, dirty paintwork, old and dated fittings that need to be replaced. My room was small and a bit spartan. The bedding appeared to be clean, but the bed was not made up again following my first nights stay. The shower looked dirty and mouldy, so much so, I chose not to use it. I did not have a chance to use the restaurant so I cannot comment on the food. The staff were all very pleasant and efficient no complaints about them at all. I planned to stay for 2 nights but left after one. All in all, just a sad old hotel in need of care and attention. I would not stay there again unless I had no other choice.

Wouldn’t stay again

The room was tatty, paintwork needed doing ect. Very dated decor. The room was unbearably hot! window only opened a fraction, we nearly slept in our car. There was 3 wasp nests outside of our window! The breakfast was extremely poor, basically raw veg, I only ate my poached egg. It was the worst place I’ve stayed in a long time.

Over priced and in no way a four star hotel

The room was strange to say the least. Empty of furniture. It felt sparse and uncomfortable. The bed was unmade. The bathroom unclean. The key didn’t work several times and had to go back to reception. There was banging and music until the early hours. The breakfast was dreadful. The order was completely wrong. The food over cooked. The staff frantic. I ordered vegetarian sausage and got nothing. My partner ordered meat and got vegetarian. If I’d paid £50 for the room I wouldn’t have minded but at £110 for one night it has a lot of work to do to justify that kind of money.

Needs a refurb

Overall, we enjoyed our stay (and have been here before). Excellent location. We had a good room, and the facilities were generally good. We like it, and will almost certainly come again. Negative points were - restaurant was closed on the Friday evening we arrived, it's in desperate need of a refurb - worn stair carpets, faded ceilings and so on. And we had to carry cases up three flights of stairs to our room - no lift or porterage. But good value at the price.
