one night stay due to a family celebration in Burton on Trent. Competitive rates for both the family room and the double room, although we found twin beds and not a double in our room. Good value for money and ideal location on the edge of Burton

Appalling and not Covid safe at all!!

I am just emailing to report an appalling stay at Mercure Burton-on-Trent. Using an Activity Superstore voucher gifted to us by my Mum two years ago (pre-Covid), my boyfriend and I booked a 2-night break at Mercure Burton, which was a complete disaster. On checking in, we had to move rooms three times due to totally unacceptable cleanliness standards (especially in Covid times but disgusting regardless!), including dirty cups, unclean and mould-ridden bathroom, damp dripping down the walls, musty/urine smell, etc and were eventually shown a room where I could at least close my eyes without worrying about catching something but that still had serious cleanliness issues and a toilet you had to sit sideways on and that didn't flush. We only settled for this room as it was 10pm by this point and we had been refused a refund by a very frosty and unprofessional receptionist and didn't want to drive home so late. Unsurprisingly, we checked out a day early after a sleepless night in a dingy room and on complaining in the morning were told that the hotel was closing down the next day, a detail completely undisclosed to us prior to our stay. This explained the dire state of the hotel but I can't believe that the hotel was still taking bookings knowing this, putting our health at serious risk by allowing us to stay in a filthy hotel during a global pandemic that has killed millions of people - totally unacceptable, especially as a high-risk individual with severe asthma!! The guy on reception said he would be in touch with options on what he can offer us as compensation for our terrible experience but has yet to contact us and we need answers from someone and a refund/voucher for another hotel stay. Thank you in advance for any help you can offer in response to this unfortunate event.

I used to work in this hotel in the mid to late 90's and standard were exceptionally high in those days. Not any more, i could not believe how bad the hotel has become. Whilst the rooms were clean and comfortable and as one would expect, the same could not be said for the rest of the hotel. The garden area is scruffy and slightly unkept, the staff whilst helpful really were a let down and not really interested in what they were doing, more interested in their phones than the guest. We did eat on one occasion from the only menu the hotel has, very poor menu and quiet obviously all frozen food with nothing cooked fresh, such a shame, that said it was acceptable.

Location was very good room very spacious but without doubt the lady in the restaurant (Izzy or similar sounding) had exceptional customer care skills and this need to be recognised!

Needs some attention with regard to fixtures fittings.

Not good, the staff outnumbered the guests but they were good as was the food, however, when ordering a bottle of wine (at Dinner), we were told there was not a wine list available, so we asked for the 'house white', only to discover when checking out, this was £26 plus, unbelievable!

General feeling of a tired room, bath panel broken, net curtain needing a wash and dust around the edges of the carpet. There was also a constant drone all night of a boiler or air con unit or similar. I wouldn't have been able to stop for more than on night. On a plus side the breakfast was very good and the gentleman over seeing very polite and friendly.

Disappointing and definitely not 4 Star

The Hotel looked wonderful on its website but when we arrived it was clearly getting worn out and our room was particularly disappointing with the bed is jammed into a tiny space. It was mainly clean and so was the bathroom but the windows were in disgraceful condition, terrible ancient paintwork was damaged and very dirty. The staff were generally pleasant and in particular the lady running the breakfast area was excellent. However overall the Hotel was in a sad run down state. We will not return or recommend to anyone.

Lovely old building, bit tired in places.

Disapointed with the facilities in the room. No bedside table for my book etc or light. No luggage stand. Squeaky bathroom door. Basic tea tray. Expected more for the price. On the good side, the staff were all efficient and friendly and the hotel was comfortable.

Very comfortable stay

Checked in, receptionist was friendly enough. Once in the room it was extremely dirty. Stained sheets, hairs in the bathroom and on the toilet and dead flies on window sill. We booked elsewhere over the phone and checked out immediately.

I stayed for an association reunion on the fri and sat. My room was a single and as expected small. However it was clean and well decorated and the bathroom was large enough. One quirk was that I had to book before 1000 if I wanted my room serviced. Shortage of staff? My room was OK but other attendees had issues which were not resolved. Externally the hotel is quite delapidated and the grounds are in very poor state. Internally there is a lot of lovely wood panelling and this makes for a dull atmosphere. The drabness of the decor does nothing to offset this and redecorating is overdue. Dinner on the Saturday was pre-booked and the staff did well to get everyone served in a reasonable time. Food was reasonable if bit bland. Bar was pricey and very dull decor wise. No urge to spend any time there. Overall - Staff were trying hard but an uphill battle. Place needs a complete revamp as it is not up to Mercure hotel standards.

We have stayed here at Newton Solney before. We had two good nights sleep, it was very comfortable. To be fair the Hotel itself is looking a little tired. The food was not brilliant, but the Staff were very friendly, kind and helpful. On the whole we enjoyed our stay at the Newton Park Hotel.

Dear agbird Thank you for your lovely feedback. Pleasure to know that you had a lovely stay at our hotel. best wishes

Village located, spacious, friendly, need for refurbishment adds to the charm

LeClubMember99 10/09/2021 TripAdvisor review

I have stayed here annually for decades, primarily because the precise location suits my purposes. The hotel, particularly the exterior including the gardens, is in need of refurbishment, but they ae dependant on whatever income they can get from events such as weddings, and from accommodation. The staff are friendly and helpful, the hotel is airy and spacious, the cooked breakfast is one of the best I have had in my worldwide travels. Choose the Garden View rooms as they have recently been fully refurbished. The staff coped well in the context of Covid, my only comment is that serving utensils for cereals, juices etc. were shared - and no guest or staff wore masks . One thing they abandoned a few years ago is the choice of kippers for breakfast - please bring them back!

Dear LeClubMember99 Thank you for your review. Always a pleasure to read that you have enjoyed your stay and I hope the same for many years to come. best wishes
