Nice staff but the hotel is in need of some tlc and better ventilation / aircon

Customer review rating 2.5/5

James G. Business - 30/07/2021 Confirmed reviews ALL

Friendly and very helpful staff, but the hotel is in desperate need of some tlc and better ventilation / aircon. The bedroom was like an oven and the furniture / furnishings are of low quality and long overdue a renewal. The structure of the building is impressive, but it is let down by the standard of the decor.

Very tired hotel

Very pleased with staff could not do enough but the state of the hotel let it down. We had to ask for another room as the first one was dirty the wardrobe door would not close, the skirting in the bathroom was falling off behind the door. The hotel was very short staffed. The grounds needed a gardener, could be lovely. We would not recommend this hotel

Came for a wedding function as well as a stay overnight. The staff was absolutely fantastic and couldn’t be more friendly even though there were many of us quite drunk. The room itself was lovely and the building is absolutely gorgeous.

poor experience

Hotel decor and common areas were tatty , definitely in need of refurbishment, and not up to the normal standards of cleanliness. Bathroom had skirting board pieces missing and ceiling was discoloured (mould?) Decoration old fashioned Bedroom tired looking and windows need replacing Food was poor in terms of choice and quality (oven chips not handcut/cooked!) but pricey Drinks choice (beer) limited Staff although perfectly pleasant seemed undertrained Gardens could be lovely but full of weeds Have stayed in Mercure before but this was not worthy of brand and would make me think of staying in Mercure again on a side note a notice encouraging people to wear masks would be useful

The room was clearly newly renovated but lacked bedside drawers. The carpet was new and the room very clean.

Fantastic old building with lots of history

We booked a one night stay to combine with our visit to the National Arboretum. By pure chance we shared the Hotel with the D Day Veterans Reunion and it made a memorable stay into something very very special

The rooms need upgrading, look tired. From the outside it looks a grand hotel but the hotel rooms don’t match your expectations. Breakfast was nice Early morning fire alarm was not welcome especially when I was bitten & been ill all week because of it and my foot/ankle is still not right.

Beautiful but not clean

I’ve never been this hot in my life! No air con, not well ventilated, lack of plug sockets in a family room. Staff were super helpful and friendly. Garden is very pretty but slabs need looking at as a little dangerous.

In need of refurbishment

I booked a privilege room- 101- the windows would not remain open- I was tolls it was a safety feature but the temperature was 30 degrees- no fans were available. The paint was peeling, the carpet old, the bathroom was tiny. No robe or slippers or nespresso machine as advertised in a privilege room. The room needs re painting and the bathroom needs upgrading- poky, Small and dark. The staircases and communal areas are dark and look tired and old. The only reason I remained was the location near Repton school. Overall I was very unimpressed with the hotel

Lovely location.

Definitely not a 4☆ as adverised. More like 2☆ Very neglected beautiful building. Such a shame. Did not use restaurant as felt overpriced. Our bedding was clean, room very dated. The overall cleanliness of hotel was very poor. No aircon and very small fan in room. Never again.

Poor standards in most things

Revd D. C. Couples - 21/07/2021 Confirmed reviews ALL

Well first room had no bath, and should have ( wife requires it). Second room had bath but no, seriously no, hot water flow so impossible to fill. Third room ok, bath worked, but both bath and shower very inaccessible for elderly. Bed was not made on day two. All carpets threadbare, towels left on narrow stairs, lift not working, gardens an absolute mess. Minimal staff, but they were pleasant and helpful. This is far from the claimed 4 star. Pretty terrible, but nice area.

Lovely location Two

Two nights around a family wedding. All staff very friendly and helpful. Neither of us particularly large people, we found the access to both shower and wc rather awkward .but the view from the window was a delight. Entrance hall and stairs and dining room have lovely old features.

Staff and service excellent hotel dated

The staff were very attentive but the rooms need an update. No air conditioning in the rooms, bathroom decor were from the 80’s with a poor shower and rust marks in the bath.

An enjoyable stay in a pleasant location

We stayed for three night mini break and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The hotel served our needs well, a comfortable room (air conditioning would have been good), pleasant and helpful staff, a decent breakfast, well located for sightseeing in the area and a pub just down the road if you like a pint of Burton beer.

Good stay and well located

Had a voucher for a dog friendly stay. Room was a bit dated but spacious, clean and comfortable. Staff were all nice. We weren’t able to bring our dog into the breakfast room but she could sit in the bar area with us instead. Breakfast time was very busy but the staff were working really hard so we were still served quickly.

Needs a refurb

TonyR1726 Family - 10/01/2020 TripAdvisor review

Overall, we enjoyed our stay (and have been here before). Excellent location. We had a good room, and the facilities were generally good. We like it, and will almost certainly come again. Negative points were - restaurant was closed on the Friday evening we arrived, it's in desperate need of a refurb - worn stair carpets, faded ceilings and so on. And we had to carry cases up three flights of stairs to our room - no lift or porterage. But good value at the price.

Not what you expect from a 4 star hotel!!

Vacation17779520545 Business - 13/12/2019 TripAdvisor review

On arrival, I was greeted at reception by a member of staff who was standing in for his colleague and confirmed he would need to get someone to check me in. The receptionist arrived and check in was painless. I have booked an upgraded room. I was allocated room 110 and was directed to the first floor via the stairs. The carpet was threadbare on the nosing of the stair and was well past its lifespan. The corridors are tired and the carpet has also seen better days. The room itself was disgusting the grey doors are damaged and scratched, the room was freezing, the sofa in the room was stained with all sorts and this was supposed to be a upgraded room. I returned to reception and raised my concerns, I was then allocated room 109 which was better. The check out in the morning was painless and all staff very pleasant. I ordered room service which was prompt and the food really nice so no complaints there. I have stayed in many hotels and this is by far the worst hotel by way of condition I have stayed in.The hotel is tired and requires upgrade in the main areas as well as the rooms, no idea how it is a 4 star hotel.

Dear Vacation 17779520545 Thank you for your comments they are very much appreciated. I have taken on board the points you have raised. Kind regards Wilma
