The initial exterior look of the property was stunning. This was however short-lived. The interior was old, outdated and worn. The communal areas and rooms are in desperate need of a refresh. The room I stayed in was "Garden View" and the view was lovely, but the room only just fit a double bed, there was a storage heater in the corner, a broken bath panel, dents in the door and a terrible electric shower. The evening food was excellent, hats off to the chef. The staff were kind and welcoming. The experience has been let down by the decor.

Food in the restaurant was good. We had a refurbished room but the bathroom door wouldn’t shut. Needs a finishing touch. Dog poop bin in the car park overflowing. Some staff good, others not bothered. Drinks in the bar very expensive. £19 for a G&T (Gordon’s) and glass of wine.

i had an overnight stay at the Mercure , Burton Upon Trent for a Business Meeting the following day. The hotel has very friendly staff, the rooms are clean and well equipped and the food was very good. I only had a snack in the evening but the breakfast was plentiful and hot.

I enjoyed it. Room 1 was a little hot because there is an exposed hot pipe running through the room - but that was a happier experience than being in a cold room. The shower head in room 1 has been changed and is now too low to get underneath (unless you are shorter). The hotel is in need of a little sprucing up, and I read that some people moan about this - personally I don't mind. It is an old building, and I liked it...

My stay was booked and paid for by my Employer. Had i booked and paid myself i would of been very unhappy but as it cost me nothing i never made any comments while staying. My room was very small for a double and my colleagues had much bigger rooms, my room was cold and felt very basic. The shower had 2 settings, boiling hot and freezing cold despite me trying for ten minutes to adjust it. Booked a table for dinner at 18:30 and we were first in the deserted restaurant but still waited nearly a hour for our basic overpriced food. On the up side staff were fairly friendly and the self serve breakfast was very good. As already said had i been paying out of my own pocket i would of definitely made a complaint but as my bill was covered I said nothing. I would not recommend the hotel to others though.

Good quality room with adequately sized bathroom , maybe something could be done regarding the size of the towel rail as it was only adequate to dry one set of towels at a time but it can be made to work. Nice view of the garden from the room and nice to have complimentary water .

A very cold Hotel with no atmosphere

None of the heating was working, which meant we were forced to eat elsewhere. The pub area emergency door was constantly being opened by staff and other young clients (not sure who they were) so they could smoke. Not only was this adding to the cold area but the smell was very of putting.

Needs a refurb

Overall, we enjoyed our stay (and have been here before). Excellent location. We had a good room, and the facilities were generally good. We like it, and will almost certainly come again. Negative points were - restaurant was closed on the Friday evening we arrived, it's in desperate need of a refurb - worn stair carpets, faded ceilings and so on. And we had to carry cases up three flights of stairs to our room - no lift or porterage. But good value at the price.

The hotel decor was a bit tired looking. The bathroom heater wasn't working. When we tried to alter the setting the casing came off exposing wires. It took ages to run a bath as we had to run the water for a long time before we got any hot water and then it just dribbled out. The shower was better. The bed was comfortable and the hotel was quiet so we got a good nights sleep. Breakfast was good and the service was quick.

The hotel was very nice and the staff were very friendly but we were put in a 2nd floor room despite having a dog. Also breakfast was self serve and it wasn't made clear that you have eggs cooked the way you like. Self serve for tea and coffee as well which is what I would expect in a budget hotel.

Tired, worn, and unwelcoming

I think the biggest issue was the hord of bluebottle flies in the window just outside the door of our room, the light fittings were full of dead flies and there were about 15 live ones flying around. Room was clean but extremely tired and musty, front desk staff could not of cared less.

We were greeted warmly by the person on reception and we found our room to be spacious and comfortable with an amazing, large bed which was lovely. While some of the hotel looked really beautiful with very attractive period features we felt that it would benefit from a bit of refurbishment. Having said that everything was very friendly and pleasant.
