Nice hotel that needs some TLC

A lovely old converted mill with amazing and friendly reception and housekeeping staff. The rooms all seem to need a bit of upgrading and the carpet on the stair was worn through to the bottom. The room was clean and tidy but lacked sockets for recharging phones, watches, laptops, etc. There was only one bedside light but as I was travelling alone this was ok. The bar service at night was efficient and friendly. Breakfast was very poor. For £18 I would expect much , much better! Had to wait for 10 mins to get a table - ok, maybe I arrived at a busy time. On going to the buffet for hot food there was no haggis, no tomatoes, no mushrooms. I waited for more food to arrive. When I didn't I asked one of the passing staff members if fresh food would be brought out. I was told yes. Beans arrived but nothing else. After waiting longer I decided to have some bacon whole I waited - it was lukewarm at best. Haggis eventually arrived and I went to get some - by then the four remaining sausages had disappeared and still no tomatoes. I had some haggis and then left. The haggis was very nice but not worth the wait. The restaurant staff didn't seem to care about guests and didn't want to engage apart from telling me there was only one chef.

Squeaky floor boards - we were lucky.

I had read the reviews and was nervous about the squeaky floor boards issue as I’m a light sleeper. It is true, the floor boards are very noisy! Luckily the person above us didn’t wake us up until 7.45am but I don’t think I would risk staying here again solely because of this and the lack of soundproofing between rooms. It’s a shame as the reception staff are lovely and it’s in a good location.

Very poor experience

Having stayed with you for 2 nights, having 2 private fuctions organised and approx 60/80 people at each function, the service was exceptionally poor for a well known hotel group such as yours. There were not enough staff on service through meal times, the staff tried hard, but the service was slow. The food on the Friday night was cold, undercooked and very sparse. Tables of 8 people were not served together to complete the table, so it was embarassing for those left waiting for food On the saturday night, the service was much the same, the quality of food was shameful. Overall very poor and would never recommend Mercure hotels for anything

We received a lovely welcome and the staff were very helpful getting us organised into our rooms. The breakfast was full of plenty of options (which were delicious) and the rooms were clean, tidy and comfortable. Thank you for a very nice stay.

hotel was lovely rooms need up grade staff were very good any problem they sorted it within minutes food was terrible we go on lots of coach trips a year but this was the worst lots of peaple went to the chip shop around the corner and took food to there bedroom the staff must of seen them we complained about the food but what can the staff do nothing its out of there hands
