Staff lovely, well prepared and organised for COVID19. Bar/restaurant was nice but service was very slow. Only two staff at breakfast and not many guests but still very slow. Room needs updating. Very old fashioned and warn. Only given one towel, had to ask for more. Pillow was like a rock. In a great location though, although no hotel parking.

one night stay. Hotel on Princes street near Waverley station. Decent Covid precautions in place. Good smell from restaurant evening and morning though I couldn't use it this time. (They'd continued the Eat out to Help out offer). Room was very clean with a great view onto the castle. Glad I booked this hotel.

we have stayed in this hotel, many times, but always upgrade to the rooms with balconies so we can enjoy the view. The location is in the middle of princess Street and within walking distance of all the bars and restaurants. Will return again soon.

Tired rooms

Anonymous Couples - 08/09/2020 Confirmed reviews ALL

Staff are very friendly and the hotel is clean which is reassuring. The room was very tired and small. A Fire escape was the view from the window and then another building. Surely with hotel capacity being low there could have been a better room on offer.

Good location near Waverley Train Station and the Bus terminal. Nice views of the Castle, if you are in a Castle view room. Not enough staff in the bar area, to cope with the amount of guests. Windows do not cut out the traffic / pedestrian noise from the street, and the walls are thin enough to hear your neighbour closing their curtains.

This was a surprise for our friends who celebrated their anniversary . We had comfy rooms with fantastic views over the most important landmarks in Edinburgh . Our evening meal was excellent and the breakfast was filling and very tasty. Location of the hotel outstanding.

Given all that's gone and going on ,I felt very safe at this hotel, our room was sealed from the moment we arrived and everyone from reception to the restaurant staff were very kind and polite, we had excellent views every day and night of Princess Street etc and had not one problem with our room and stay, and would highly recommend the mercure, i will return, thank you mercure.

I asked for a room with view and got it. Bonus as my wee boy loves looking out window.

Good location, clean, maintained social distancing very well. Walls are quite thin and could hear a lot from other rooms

Complained about our room we were in 550 and there was a constant noise the whole night.

When I complained about the room the gentleman on the desk was very helpful. I told him we were coming back in 4 weeks time and we did not want the same room as before. He told us that because we had such a bad experience he would try and upgrade us to a better room. I told him that this would much appreciated.

Not worth the money.

Rang hotel 3 times prior arrival to query parking and breakfast. No answer. On arrival were told breakfast fully booked. Cost us £22 to park overnight in train station as we didn't no where else to park. Nothing to stir the tea or coffee in the room. Had dinner, I had salmon and husband had scotch pie, sack the chef .....the pie was inedible, beef was so tough. Salmon meal was smaller than a starter at £16 it was neither quality or quantity. Short staffed so service was slow if at all. Wouldn't stay here again.

Good location, bad hotel

Firstly, reserving a room proved very difficult. I called up the reservation centre and explained I wanted a castle room with a balcony but this couldn’t be looked at. I got passed to another agent who then told me I cannot book this room and then eventually they passed me to the hotel reception to book where I was also told I cannot book one of these rooms, they can only upgrade me and put it in my notes that I would prefer that room as they cannot guarantee it. This already frustrated me because I was visiting the hotel for one of those specific rooms. I wasn’t tied to a date. Anyway. I email the day before to request this thinking if I get in early it will be fine only to be told that I didn’t book this room and there’s no availability. Only standard rooms. Very disappointed and confused, I called the reservations desk again to enquire about upgrading. They couldn’t find my booking to begin with, eventually they had to call the hotel directly but all these balcony rooms were sold out. When I arrived at the hotel I explained this to reception and they told me I should have booked the balcony room and it would have been an extra £50. To which I replied that I would have paid that had I been allowed to book. They then had none left and every single other room is booked out which meant I couldn’t upgrade at all. I was left extremely frustrated. We ended up in a castle facing room which was a lovely view. The room was tiny, the bathroom was ancient. The whole floor was very very warm and the room too hot. You had to side shuffle around the bed. The privilege rooms are all modern so if you book, I’d book one of them, (if you can) Overall I was left very disappointed. Had no idea it would be so tricky to book a room of choice well in advance!!!!

Booked a 2 night city break with breakfast and a bottle of wine on arrival rooms were well equipped, comfortable and clean. Hotel staff were friendly and pleasant. Location great. In walking distance from train station all the shops and bars and opposite a lovely park. Some rooms will have lovely views but unfortunately ours looked onto a roof and Lots of pipe work that could get a bit nosy for a while but as we had planned to be out all day we didn’t mind not having the view too much.
