Very professional staff, everything with regards to Covid explained on arrival. Dining staff excellent. Hotel very quiet which in some ways was good for us with less risk of infection, although not good for the hotel I’m sure.

I booked a twin room for my daughter and I to stay one night 9/10/2020. We booked the hotel on a recommendation from my partner who had stayed here several times before. On arrival we were very happy with the hotel and our room. However, in the morning my daughter discovered that the bed she had slept in had been made up using severely dirty linen. This was not spotted by us initially as it was on the underside of the duvet cover. A cleaner knocked on our door to see if we had left, so I showed her the cover, she gasped when she saw it and said she would see her supervisor straight away. I then proceeded to tell reception and sent them the photograph. The gentleman said he would investigate the matter and contact the cleaning supervisor straight away, as I told him they wanted to clean the room and they needed to see it ASAP. He assured us that he would report back to me when we collected our luggage later in the day. Upon our return he was not around but a lady told us that they hadn’t had chance to look into it. I wasn’t very happy with this response at the time and feel it should have been handled better by the hotel. I emailed you with a formal complaint and asked for a response however, still nothing came back hence the negative review. Bed linen in that state is totally unacceptable at any time, however the concern is hugely magnified in the current COVID climate, where cleanliness is everything.

Hotel is well located, right in the heart of the city, great views of the castle and park however the room we got was dated & tiny. If you're a frequent t. and used to contemporary hotel furnishings then this hotel is not for you. On the plus side, we couldn't find a spec of dust in the entire room. On the first night the room was very warm, without air conditioning we had to open the windows but being right on princes street, the noise was unbearable; it was a horrible night. pros: clean room, great views, good staff, very tasty breakfast, best location for exploring city, comfortable beds. cons: dated/small rooms, thin walls, no extractor fan in toilet, no air conditioning.

The Mercure on Princes Street in Edinburgh is well located and was ideal for us. There were one or two things that did take the shine off our stay though: Our room (262) smelt of cigarettes (evidence of which was in the gutter below our room window, approx 10 cigarette butts). We did get our room changed, but it's still not acceptable to present a room to a guest when it reeks like that. I appreciate that in these times of COVID-19, we have to make allowances, but in my opinion, the 50+ minutes that we had to wait for our food in Scott's restaurant was a bit excessive especially as the meal itself could only be described as 'ok' at best! To mitigate eating at Scott's for a second evening, we had a room service meal - I had a chicken Korma which didn't come with the mango chutney as was stated on the room service menu and my partner had a pizza which she said had a stale base (not freshly made). We have used the Mercure Dolphin in Southampton on two previous occasions and had far superior service as far as both room standards and food standards were concerned. Don't get me wrong - the staff at the Mercure in Edinburgh were fantastic and could not do enough to help us out, but I do feel that the issues we encountered on our most recent visit may well give us reason to re-think our plans for accomodation next time we go to Edinburgh (to see our daughter who is at University up there). Walls are very thin so could hear both rooms on each side all night, rooms are very warm and uncomfortable with heating off and our room was very loud with the main road outside for trams etc, rooms very dated so lucky if your in one that isn’t

The room was nice and the staff were helpful, we had free breakfast included with the deal we got so it did live up to the standard of a free breakfast, however we never received our toast and the breakfast staff on the first morning never came over when I tried to get there attention, however I understand they may have been busy.

Although the stay and staff were pleasant, there was a complete lack of atmosphere in the bar and dining area. The rooms and corridors are clean but tired and in need of updating. The reception and dining area were cold because the street doors were not operating properly. That all said, I wouldn’t rule out returning to the Mecure for its location.
