It’s so difficult making the right decision when choosing a hotel in a place like Brighton. But we really struck lucky with the Mercure. Location is perfect. the hotel has obviously spent a lot of time and money on its refurb because every part of the hotel is pristine. We had a superior suite which as you might imagine was top notch. Staff were all lovely, great hotel thank you for looking after us so well.

I like to be beside the sea…but in future it won’t be here.

Good kerb appeal, but smokers outside the front door are not a good look. The front steps and revolving door look a bit Victorian/Edwardian, but are not that great if you have poor vision or are disabled. Get inside and atmosphere becomes immediately gloomy and tired. Lifted a bit by the efficient check in staff. However, making my way to the room the tiredness became more and more apparent: every floorboard creaked, carpet worn and pulling away (dangerous on the stairs), crockery left on the floor at the ends of corridors. No lift to speak of, apart from one that went up to floor one but situated as far away from the reception area as you can get. The room was surprisingly large, but it was a Privilege branded room. Little else about it provided evidence of the right to that name. There was an odd configuration of small windows where you had to scramble over furniture to get at the curtains. The bed was overly large, but comfortable to sleep on. The bathroom! I question the rationale for such a small bath. I imagine that the designer thought they were rather clever in forcing a bath into such a space together with an over the bath shower. In reality, it makes them both dangerous. The solid shower screen forces you to a narrow space at the end of the bath where it is sloping upwards and there’s nothing to hang onto except the towel rail. The toilet required 3 flushes for each use. I used the Coastal bar a couple times, and while the staff seemed pleasant enough, training seemed to have been skimped on. Ordered salads from the bar menu at one day and didn’t get to eat until over an hour later. Luckily it was a pleasant afternoon and the view was passable. Finally the breakfasts. Oh dear! How can you get this simple meal wrong? Barely warm yet elements such as the fried eggs and mushrooms were overcooked. All in all, even allowing for the premium as a seaside hotel, it provides pretty poor value for money. I won’t be going back.

The hotel looks tired and the rooms are inadequate for the money being spent. Frankly most of the images shown were misleading.

Dear Mark, Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. While I’m pleased we were ultimately able to upgrade your room, I’m sorry to hear the experience did not meet your expectations overall. We understand how important it is for promotional imagery and communication to accurately reflect the product and appreciate you highlighting this. Your comments regarding the overall condition of the hotel and the handling of your upgrade request have been noted and shared with the relevant teams. We are currently undertaking phased refurbishments to enhance both comfort and presentation across the property, and your observations help guide those improvements. We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back in the future and deliver a stay more in line with your expectations. Warm regards, Ioannis Operations Manager Mercure Brighton Seafront Hotel

Beautiful hotel. The view from the seating area in the bar is superb. From the moment we stepped into the foyer we were looked after brilliantly by the staff. This place is very special and I'm glad we stayed here.

From the start, our stay was disappointing. I had arranged foil balloons to make my boyfriends birthday at the hotel special, and over email had confirmed this. Upon arrival, it was clear that this was not organised. We checked in late at 5:30pm, and were instructed the room was not ready (aka they forgot about the birthday arrangements) so would wait in the bar for 15 mins. This did not bother me too much, and i thought the voucher for 2 free drinks was a nice touch/ apology for this mistake. At the bar, I ordered a white wine and my boyfriend ordered a pint of cider, only to be told they did not have any cider left. So eventually he decided on a rum and coke instead. We used the drinks vouchers, to be told that spirits were not covered so I would have to pay for his drink. I dont understand why the receptionist couldn't have said 'heres two vouchers for a drink at the bar, this will cover house wines and draught beers'. Especially as he tried to order a cider, and only chose something else when what he wanted was not available. Surely they could have just comped this drink. Instead, I paid £11 for a drink we only had due to the mistake of the hotel. This already left a bad taste. Once we got to the room, it was clear that my wishes had not been fulfilled - I paid £16 specifically for number balloons, and instead, there were two pink 'happy birthday' balloons. If the hotel did not have what I wanted, why did they charge me? It seems they were just trying to take my money and hoping i wouldn't say anything. Whilst I was refunded for this mistake, the communication seemed poor from start to finish. The room itself was clean, but had many huge flies that we lost sleep over and had to catch ourselves. For a special occasion, I would not recommend it and suggest that people organise room decorations themselves.

Dear Poppy, Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback, and I’m truly sorry that your experience with us did not meet expectations, especially on such a special occasion. We understand how important it is to create memorable moments for celebrations like a birthday, and I regret that the balloon arrangements and communication fell short. While I’m glad the refund was processed, I agree that the situation should have been handled far more smoothly from the outset, including clearer information about the bar vouchers and what they covered—particularly given that your change of order stemmed from limited availability. I also apologise for the discomfort caused by the presence of flies in the room. Your comments have been shared with the relevant teams to ensure improvements are made across guest communication, attention to detail, and pre-arrival arrangements. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me directly if you do consider giving us another chance in the future. We’d love the opportunity to restore your faith in the experience we aim to offer. Warm regards, Ioannis Operations Manager Mercure Brighton Seafront Hotel
