Lovely hotel, very welcoming team

What a wonderful hotel - lovely decor/ambience. The best thing for me was the warm welcome by all the staff - especially the beaming Amal welcoming you to breakfast and the very helpful and attentive Salah who was managing the breakfast room. I was staying solo but was in Brighton for my niece's birthday. I asked reception if i could invite my nieces for breakfast - and it was no trouble. Amal kept her eyes peeled for them arriving and Salah made sure a table for us was available so we could all sit together. Nothing was too much trouble. And without a doubt, the cooked breakfast was outstanding, honestly the best I have ever had in a hotel. My nieces said they would go back just for breakfast. I would recommend this hotel - the sea view is pretty special too. I will also stay again for the next family gathering.

Tired, Dated and Mis-Sold

Arrived at 3pm and the queue to check in took over 40 mins. The lobby area is the smartest part of the Hotel, the rest being very tired and dated with worn out carpets and old decor to all communal areas. By the way, the car park is tiny and awkward to park in once over half full.. if you've got a big car then forget it as you wont be able to open your doors once all spaces are taken. Room 115 - if you're offered this room then decline it. The rooms are advertised as 258 square feet - this one is less than 150 square feet (see pics). It is stifling hot, even in April and the window (opaque) and splattered with pigeon faeces doesn't open(see pics); air conditioning is not an option. In the summer months I think this room would be unbearable. Sound proofing is also non-existent, if it isn't the noise of the pigeons then it's the noise of the next room even if they are talking quietly, let alone the coming and going to the adjacent room. The bathroom is a joke. It resembles a small cloakroom toilet facility (see pics of the advertised bathrooms against the actual bathroom of room 115). The shower cubicle is less than 20 inches wide and deep, the showerhead is fixed and the temperature is variable automatically. There is no room once inside the shower, you simply stand there and get wet and hopefully not burnt as the water temperature changes. The toilet itself is mounted on a plinth meaning when you sit on it your feet cannot touch the floor - very uncomfortable experience. To get to the toilet you have a 12 inch gap between the wall and the sink to navigate. When standing at the sink you have no option to bend to wash your face or you face will just hit the mirror. The bar shuts at 11pm sharp, even on Saturdays, so if you fancy a nightcap or a hot drink when returning from an evening out then forget it. I requested another room once I had seen and experienced all the above but unfortunately the hotel was fully booked for the weekend. The duty manager totally accepted my complaint and said he understood fully however had no room to move me and my partner to. Basically the end result was the carpark charge of £56 was waived and the breakfast charge of £36 was also waived. Although to be honest I actually think the overall charge for the room of over £400 is daylight robbery, not that I would want to stay in again for any price. The duty manager at this time was unable to move us due to the logistics so can't be held accountable but I question why this room is even sold to customers. Under no circumstances will I ever book this hotel again. All I can say that is positive about the whole experience is that the staff are very welcoming, polite and basically try do their very best in a very tired and dated establishment.

A true musical interlude of memories.

What a musical treat to be had! Marianne Front Office Manager singing the delights from Carmen via Milan’s La Scala on arrival was so extra special. To the bar in the evening with Ida with her crisp cheerful singing delightful songs from Sweden to the dear passionate Zoe songs from Waitress make a performance that extra special. In the morning we are entertained by Salah and his two compatriots for breakfast with their male voice choir befitting from the Welsh Valleys. An experience to be commended all round!

The hotel was easy to find being on the seafront, Parking was at the rear of the hotel which is tight for larger vehicles, and spaces are limited. On arrival at reception I was greeted by two lovely ladies who were friendly and jovial. The £28.00 parking fee was as a guest rather high, especially for the spaces available however I know parking in other hotels can be higher. The hotel has the slowest lift I have come across and I found it quicker to use the stairs. My room was best described as compact, but for a single traveller overnight was functional. I had an evening meal in the bar area and the food was very good, assisting my choice were the two ladies in the bar. Breakfast was busy, however I again had a table set up for me in the bar area. Breakfast was good with ample supply on offer. The main hotel itself is in need of a bit of an uplift, the carpets are showing signs of wear and tear, however the staff make up for the shortfall, all were pleasant and helpful. Having stayed in different Mercure hotels this was an enjoyable stay Yes, I would stay again but I would choose a better room if only for additional space.
