Good but flawed by intro of hidden 10% add on

This hotel has been a regular choice for me. This stay though will be my last. There is a new regime introduced at Jupiter owned hotels this week which seems to think it's OK to secretly add a 10% service charge to all bills. The new front of house manager here is also not upto standard with an arrogant attitude. Sorry to be negative, but this is one off my list.

Dear Spoonwother Thank you for your review and I'm terribly sorry to hear that you were disappointed with your stay. We have recently had our tills upgraded and I'm sorry for any inconvenience cause. The 10% service in the bar has just been brought to my attention yesterday that the bar drink somehow had a 10% service charge levied. Until I get this resolved I've asked the team to remove this from any bills presented. For the restaurant the 10% service charge has always been on the bill which of course you can ask for it to be removed. I am sorry if you were inconvenienced during your stay. On check in we ask all our guests if they would like to apply credit to their room making an authorization to open up their account on the room. I am sorry if you feel this is unacceptable and of course we would be delighted to look after you again should you wish to visit Brighton. With kind regards Catherine

On checking in , was asked if I had paid as nothing showing on Accor system. Provided a screen shot of booking confirmation showing payment made and emailed it to front desk. On checking out two days later was told I had not paid. Had to wait for the manager. Provided Amex statement to show payment made and taken at the time of booking. Was told that payment located in pending account. At this point clear that no action taken at time of checking in. Made to feel like a criminal and no real apology given, considering that hat the fault was clearly with Accor system and probably wouldn’t have happened if a third party booking site had been used. Your customers deserve better than this and will think carefully before booking again, despite needing to visit Brighton often to visit relatives as there are many other similarly priced options. Quality or room good and beds comfortable. Quality of shampoo offered awful. Didn’t use the restaurant or room service as vegan options very limited

I believe that the payment was unfortunately showing pending as it could not allocated to the new system as we literally were shutting down one system and opening up the new one. I absolutely take on board your comments that this having been highlighted should have been resolved by the team at the time so that you didn't experience the same issue on departure and will be talking more with our front desk teams on problem resolution to resolve this going forwards. This stay was in the bridal suite after our magical wedding day that Becky, Ben and Catherine helped to create for us. They were there every moment we needed them and the bridal suite was an incredibly beautiful room to spend our evening in.

Well located, good public areas, terrible room

Hotel was great (we're stayed before) the room was very hot, airless and the bathroom so tiny it was awkward to actually get into the shower and then close the door. The big problem was the temperature. It was completely swealtering when we checked in. Before leaving for the evening we turned off the radiator, covered all the exposed heating pipes with towels and opened the window as far as it was possible to do so. When we returned we also switched on the in room fan. After a very sleepless night we measured the temperature in the morning and it was still 26 centigrade, not acceptable. We should have requested a differnt room when we returned from our evening, but it didn't seem likely that Mercure would sell a room with such a fundamental problem, the hotel was clearly full and changing rooms in the late evening is hardly convenient, so we persisisted. I've been an Accor club member for years and this is the worst room I've had by some distance. You really shouldn't be selling it with such a fundamental issue as this. Very dissapointed

The restaurant and bar area are very modern and nice. The hotel staff all very friendly and helpful. The only negative was our room location, as We unfortunately had a room which was in the Mews and the 3rd floor so no lift available, which was quite hard with our bags but the receptionist did offer to help us. If we came back we would definitely ask for a room with lift access. Dinner and breakfast were both good. The hotel was about a 15 min walk to the Lanes. We enjoyed our stay and would recommend this hotel.

Really enjoyed our 2 night stay. Have stayed in all the hotels along Brighton seafront & was put off by the outside of your hotel but I must say i was really impressed. Lovely hotel, great entrance & room was beautiful.

Not pet friendly (despite what it says on the Mercure Happy Tails website)

We booked a room to take our four month old puppy to the beach for the first time as the Mercure Happy Tails website says the hotel is pet friendly, but they called the day before our trip to say they didn't accept pets. It'd a good thing I sent a message to ask for a pet friendly room or we would have wasted a journey to Brighton. The manager was very apologetic though.

The hotel has been de-listed for pets since the refurbishment in 2019 and has certifications that we are allergen free. Our room was small with no view. The carpet was stained and with an iron burn on it. The overall feel of the hotel was very tired. Very expensive for what it was and parking in the hotel carpark was £25 extra. The staff were overall friendly and efficient. Breakfast was included and although the service was very efficient (we were only ones in dining room) the cooked breakfast was average. A shame. The location is good but not worth the price charged.

Hotel was lovely, great location, staff friendly and lovely room. However, during the high winds and rain the room felt open to the elements, with both wind and rain leaking in to the room through the balcony doors and keeping us awake all night.

We had a lovely overnight stay . We were upgraded to sea view rooms upon arrival and both rooms were lovely. All staff were very accommodating and helpful and nothing was too much trouble.

Breakfast was late coming to my room, and it was cold and they forgot the toast. The cleaner needs to have more time to clean up the The room after the last party was there. Windows need to be looked it after heavy draft coming through both of them so left curtains shut to keep it warm. Tried to phone reception and cable fell out of the hand set , reception lady was quite a abrupt , doesn’t quite listen to what you have to say, The reception lady needs to go on more training as her customers service skills made us feel that we had Corvid , THE The restaurant staff were very good at their job and the chef on the evening did a lovely meal for the wife and I, and the bar staff made you feel very welcome, this was my first break since the beginning of Covid and I visit Brighton 3 to 4 times a year and it spoils it for me

Loved the overall decor of the hotel. Rooms were clean and comfortable, a little on the small side but more than adequate. Breakfast was fab, freshly prepared & great choice for veggies.
