A faded and rundown experience a shadow of its former self

We have stayed at "The Bankfield" many times. In fact we had our wedding reception there 48 years ago but have returned several times over the years in between. The hotel is now looking very run down and seriously in need of a face lift in terms of the decor, outfitting , general state of repairs, better training of front of house staff , quality of food etc, etc. In fact the hotel under performed on just about every level possible. Even the heating was out of control as it was oppressively hot in the bar and reception areas. You might say you dont have to sit in the bar, unfortunately you do if you wanted to eat a meal as the restaurant had been taken over by coach parties. This was never advised to us when booking or checking in. Checking in wasnt immiediately possible because as the receptionist advised the card machine wasnt working so room cards couldnt be programmed. I suggested the other card reader on the counter but was advised the computer it was connected to wasnt working either. We were asked to wait in the bar area which we did but when trying to order a drink no barman was in place. I went back to reception and asked if the bar was open, which they confirmed it was and when i advised there was no bar staff to be seen they went to chase some down to serve me. This individual left the bar as soon as he had served me and when trying to order further drinks for friends who had joined us i had to go back to reception to complain about the absence of bar staff. The bar staff appeared again from where ever they had been hiding but service was sullen and unco-operative. I asked for some crisps with our drinks to be told - No Crisps, what about peanuts I asked - No peanuts was the reply, do you have any snacks I asked - No was the reply , we only get supplies on a Monday (this was a Saturday) My wife is gluten intolerant so for the evening meal (that had to be eaten in the bar while football blared out on two big screens) she chose plaice with crushed new potatoes and roasted root vegetables but specifically requested no tomato dressing/sauce that the menu specified came with the fish as it was not listed as being gluten free. I ordered the fish and chips (cant go wrong with fish and chips I thought.) About 10 minutes after we placed our order the same sullen bar man came to tell me that there was no fish and chips and no roasted root vegetables. So we kept the plaice order with crushed new potatoes and I ordered a chicken burger. After approx half an hour the fish arrived (with the tomato sauce dressing that wasnt wanted) and as for the "crushed new potatoes" there was a pile of something on the plate that can only be described as a greasy fried mess that closely resembled Bubble and squeak with variations of ingredients mixed in it of unknown origin - It was as far away from "crushed new potatoes" as it could possibly be. Sufficient to say only the fish was eaten. As for the chicken burgher it was overcooked and tough. However the kicker was that as we left the bar having endured the wholly unsatisfactory dining experience a table of three fellow travellers who were also presumably banished to eat in the bar were being served the fish and chips that I had been advised wasnt available only 50 minutes previously. Sunday breakfast wasnt much better. Breakfast started at 8 o clock and we were at the restaurant bang on 8 only to join the queue of two coach parties all trying to breakfast at the same time. The buffet was running out of eggs three times before I got anywhere near the hot food and when it was my turn i had to wait again for more eggs to appear (a tray with five eggs was brought out and there must have been 20 people behind me in the queue. Totally dissatifying hotel experience and although we have stayed there many times I have said to my wife, we will never book this hotel again. Merecure need to inject investment, engage in better staff training, provide more staff, start from scratch and build up the hotel service that customers expect , starting from the ground up. The room was ok but badly in need of a refurbishment. Kettle with tea and coffee (but no biscuits)

Super friendly staff, arrived with smiles from everyone and always happy to help. Room was clean and well presented..temperature was perfect (dont like stuffy red hot rooms) and to top it off the breakfast was tremendous..buffet style and loads to choose from.
