A dreadful hotel with no cleaning standards

Upon arrival, we were allocated Room 235, which was in an absolutely filthy and unacceptable condition. I have attached photographs which clearly demonstrate the shocking state of the room. What is even more concerning is that the room had been signed off as cleaned by your housekeeping team — something that calls into question the standards and procedures being followed. If this is considered “clean” by your team, then it is evident that urgent retraining is required. Following our complaint, we were moved to Room 258, which we were told was the best and most expensive room in the hotel. While this room was notably cleaner, it was extremely hot and uncomfortable. We struggled to sleep, and to our disbelief, the radiators were on full blast in some parts of the hotel in June. This made the room almost unbearable and completely negated any comfort the upgrade may have offered. While the other room 231 was a lot cooler the other side of the building. The problems didn’t end there. The reception area was incredibly unwelcoming — handwritten signs taped to the walls, ceiling tiles missing, and a general lack of professionalism in the presentation. The check-in process was painfully slow, and overall, the hotel gave the impression of being very poorly maintained and mismanaged. There were only two positives during our stay: the availability of parking and the quality of the food. However, these cannot outweigh the negative experiences we endured. This trip was booked by my partner for a wedding, and she was left deeply upset — our weekend was effectively ruined. No guest should have to experience this level of disappointment, especially when staying at a well-known hotel brand like Mercure. While your front desk staff did their best in the moment, cleanliness and basic comfort are non-negotiable, and what we experienced was simply a disgrace. Some staff members were not wearing name badges also. I would rate our stay 3 out of 10 at best, unfortunately, we would not consider returning. My daughter in law was also heavily pregnant and really struggled with the heat in and around the hotel. We will never stay at a Mercure again our weekend was ruined.

Stayed for a single night. Speedy check in (thanks, Julie) and a large, quiet, comfortable room plus breakfast for a very good price. Plenty of car parking.

Could be a good hotel, yh we was in a budget room but it still needs to be alright surely, a lick of paint maybe! A nearly hotel was nearly going home, nearly complaining at reception, it was nearly a s**thole, stayed for 1 night probably wouldn't again, didnt try the food so cant say anything about that, charging £6:50 a pint but cant buy a tin of emulsion from b and m?
