Mercure Hull Grange Park Hotel

Wow. Where to begin… This is a pretty terrible hotel. 1Bathroom was from the 1970s. I counted 5 shades of beige. Shower over bath, bath gives way when you stand in it. No hot water and a dribble of water pressure. Loose fixtures. Paint peeling everywhere, sagging ceiling, boiling hot and no air con. 2 weddings on the night we stayed. Incredibly noisy, lots of music, no quiet spaces anywhere in the hotel. Music was loud in our room in the evening. Communal areas were dirty. There is no where nice to sit, just lots of pleather chairs in a thoroughfare. Couldn’t go in the garden as full of wedding guests. Had to change rooms due to the noise. Reception staff were apologetic. Next room was better, cooler and quieter and didn’t smell like the first one but still very basic. It was clean though. Out the window had lovely view of old oil containers and someone’s pants in the rain guttering! Breakfast was ok, communal areas noisy and dirty. Wedding guests from night before took over breakfast area and it had a feel of Butlins! Reception staff had said they would speak to management about our noise complaint but nothing forthcoming. In essence, it’s something from Alan partridge and I couldn’t wait to leave. A motel at best. Dated, old, smelly. First and last experience of mercure! We paid the equivalent of £130 a night for this hotel. I think it’s a £40 a night motel. Avoid!

So… I booked for one night on a business trip, the double room I booked on the website was not what I went into, however, let me start from the greeting. The staff really are wonderful and the hotel management are very lucky to have them if I were a local hotel I would snap them up. On arrival, See the photo of the chair that the receptionist sat on a chair falling apart (shame on the management) if that’s how they expect their staff to work what on earth is the message to guests?? behind the chair was a carpet stuck together with duck tape - not a discreet one but a bright silver one. I was given my room key, up I went and there it was, a dated, humid, in desperate need of upgrading, a peach bathroom suite from the 80’s Mould, floor hadn’t been mopped, loo roll 1/4 left, someone’s hair left for me to enjoy. The window wouldn’t open as the handle was broken and had fallen off, dirty room and very cold (not in temperature unfortunately!) Reception were great and gave me another room, the only difference was two cushions a throw and a small table. Shower had no force, I am not heavy but when I stepped into the bath for a very ‘dribble’ shower it felt as if the bath was going to fall through to the floor below. I had originally booked to stay at the doubletree in Hull but changed my mind as the Mercury looked lovely. I wish I had stayed with my original choice Plus side…. Gardens lovely, staff wonderful, food great On a final but important note, there were no electrical plug points by the bed at all or even on the entire wall where the bed is, they are all on the opposite wall so if you need your phone by you, or a fan plugged in by the bed you have no chance.

Towel rail fell off the wall twice! Was a large step down to get out of the bath/shower, could have done with a hand rail to steady one’s self on exiting the bath/shower. Staff were very good, curtious and helpful.
