Room was rather cold so we had to borrow an electric heater

All very good. Dining room was a bit cold, but just the nature of the building (a conservatory) on a cold evening. Heating was full on, apparently - so staff were doing their best.a
Sadly disappointing Valentine visit.

Yes, it had recently rained, but one had to plot a careful path across a muddy car park. We were allocated a ground floor room which was helpful and easy to find, but upon entering, our "chocolates" turned out to be a £1 Galaxy bar! A little disappointing. Room 43 is a good size, but the peeling paintwork on the cornice in the bathroom again is not conducive to a romantic stay. I can only guess that the chef is foreign or has never heard of Valentines day. This is because the "special" valentine three course menu offered very little to tempt a romantic style to the meal. We were offered a worthwhile discount on the a la carte menu instead of the set menu. The lamb rump was excellent, but surely better served with a steak knife. A small overspend on our allowance was waived when this was mentioned. A good reaction from the server and all staff were helpful and friendly. At breakfast again the cooked options of fried eggs, sausages, bacon, mushrooms (very good) were all fine, but there was no fresh bread rolls, jams and no ham, cheese etc., which is offered at most other hotels of such a calibre. Check out was fine and staff polite, but one is left with a feeling the staff know that all is not quite right and the problem rests with Mercure and not with the staff themselves.

We had a great time in a beautiful location. Staff were attentive and the food was delicious. Couldn't ask for more. Thanks
Cosy weekend away
