Rather disappointing stay. Hotel has only recently reopened and perhaps that is done excuse. Though staff pleasant there was a queue at reception . Restaurant was inefficient and food satisfactory but not special. No room cleaning service despite requesting it.

I wasn't impressed with the standard of the suite we stayed in however I found the majority of the staff to be excellent. Wasn't supplied with complimentary slippers, robe or newspaper as stated. Found bathroom to be very disappointing and had several other small issues throughout our stay. The stay just didn't live up to my expectations and unfortunately it's unlikely that I would return.

Regretfully our 2 day stay was one of the worst experiences we have ever had staying in a hotel. The operation of the hotel bar and the dining room on the first night was a total shambles. It took 3 hours for us to eat dinner on the first evening. It was the same for everyone eating that night. One resident waited over 90 minutes for their first course and another 3 hours for the main course. The service on the second night was much better, but the bar service continued to be awful. Regretfully we also had a problem with the toilet in our bathroom, although fixed twice, was still not working when we left. All in all a very bad experience. Total lack of training for staff and management no where to be seen.

Misleading, missing simple things

Called up before hand and mentioned we wanted to book the jacuzzi, was booked in only to be told on arrival that the jacuzzi is closed and we could only go In the pool. That evening we went for a drink and snack in the bar. The bottled soft drink was warm, we were not offered condiments and left to our own evicted so couldn’t ask for some and there was no air con or fans on making the room to warm. We then went to go for a walk in the “landscaped 2 acre garden” which was part of the reason we chose this hotel but we could only find a small section at the back of the hotel we could walk through. We asked reception for some Breakfast tea was given one and then the guy started walking off when we said we need another he stated “ I haven’t got any” in a dismissive tone. Finally, the tv in the room didn’t work until we did some DIY on the aerial cable to fix it. The dust on the back of the tv was a clear sign no one had checked.

Run down and uncomfortable

I booked two rooms. A twin and a family. From the pictures the family should have had a sofa bed and bigger sq ft. It did not, it was exactly the same as the twin but with a single and double bed instead. Both were run down and dirty. ALL of the floorboards creaked loudly throughout the hotel. The twin did not have air con (the other room did) it only had a tower fan that only operated for 2hrs at a time. Not good for hottest weekend of the year. Also the shower in the twin room trickled out water only. Rooms were outdated and worn. Seemed dirty. Holes in ceilings etc. Awful for the money. Didn't sleep at all on the first night (This is not an exaggeration. I am serious) the pillows were lumpy and uncomfortable. Wouldn't stay again if the hotel paid us for the room. Staff require more training. One bar staff offered us a cocktail menu which never came and when we enquired with someone else we were told there was no such thing as a cocktail menu. Wierd. Breakfast staff were a disaster but I've spent longer than I'd like writing this review. Overall the hotel has nothing good to say about it sadly.

Awful experience. Good points were the bed and hotel location. Everything else was worst hotel and service I've ever had to experience. 2 star hotel, due a massive refurb. Stayed here for our 25th anniversary, will be memorable for all the wrong reasons. Can't be bothered to list everything! Rachel dealt with my complaint really well to be fair to her.

Staff were excellent but were let down by lack of training and no evidence of management being hand on during our stay. Service in dining room chaotic in particular last Thursday. Courses were taking an hour to arrive and were then taken to wrong tables. Supposedly hot breakfast was lukewarm at best. Hotel very dated.

One of the worst hotel experiences ever!

Room needed updating, no sockets for plugging phones in at the bed side, no table lamps at the side of the bed, mouldy sealant around bath and ceiling tiled not positioned correctly. The facilities were non existent as far as we were concerned due to them requiring booking 3 days in advance, yet having no communication advising us of this prior to our arrival. We were looking forward to using the pool. The restaurant was a joke, we waited an hour for our starters to arrive, staff served the food with masks even not worn at all or not worn correctly over their noses. There was no manager on duty and only young staff who I felt sorry for. You need to take a serious look at the management if this hotel, it’s simply not good enough and requires a huge overall.

A pleasant place to spend an afternoon/evening before taking our girls to the zoo the following day Booked a swim slot which was ideal for kids, while we relaxed in the bar.... Restaurant was ok... Service was slow (we waited an hour from being seated until we received our starters) but the food and staff were great

Shocking and chaotic in a nutshell! Reception did not give any information about our stay re: cleaning of rooms etc. We were also advised by Reception on our arrival that the restaurant was closed and it was unknown if it would be open for any of our stay. It transpired that a large coach party was staying who had exclusive access to the restaurant. Everyone else was expected to eat in the Bar and were only offered the Bar menu (burgers and Pizza!) Bar service appalling, excuses given by staff that tills were broken and being sent into the restaurant to work, when in fact it was their own incompetence and there were multiple wrong drink deliveries and unacceptable waits for drinks. When we pressed for a restaurant booking we were given a slot a lot later than ideal but were "allowed in". The service at table was shocking with servers getting every course at most tables wrong. In all not a great experience, although this could be a fantastic place to visit as it is so easy to get into Chester.

My wife and I have been visiting the Abbots Well Hotel for more than 20 years and have always been extremely happy with all aspects of our stay. The accommodation is comfortable and the food is excellent. But what really makes the difference is the attention we receive from the staff. Nothing is too much trouble for them and we always receive a warm welcome. As long as we can still make the journey, we will be back. Thank you.

Friendly welcoming staff. The room was stifling hot due to a hot pipe running through and it was not possible to open the small top window any wider. Consequently, we did not sleep terribly well. The fan provided was not really man enough to help cool the room either. The staff were all very helpful - Sue on reception, Bradley in the dining room and Edward in the bar.

A very disappointing stay. I booked the weekend for a friend’s birthday so we could use the spa . When we arrived we were told the swimming pool was closed. We were given some drink vouchers but on arrival at the bar we were told we could not have champagne or wine by the glass . The Prosecco was only for hen parties. There was a very limited offer on bottled beers . The rooms and hotel looked very tired and the shower did not work well . Definitely not a 4 star experience and not worth the money we paid .

V v basic. Room was smelly. Room was dusty. Check in took a long time and needed my card details yet again when I thought I’d paid. Reservation was book as room only but reception thought B&B.

Ok for a one night stay

The staff were great and very helpful but as I was made aware of our stay being on the 2nd day of opening things didn’t quite seem prepared for guests. Our room was a little grubby with tea and milk dribbles on the underside of the tv table and the kettle had seen better days so none of that was used. The bathroom was clean and the beds were clean and that’s all we needed really. Breakfast the following morning was interesting. Having order a full English with vegetarian sausages and scrambled egg we were surprised when that’s all that came out about 30 minutes later. Just the eggs and sausage. We sent it back after telling our waiter what we’d ordered and it came back 10 minutes later without bacon and beans. The table next to us finally got their breakfast with what seemed to be our helpings of bacon and beans. Just not impressed and won’t be using the hotel again. Shame as the staff were great and it was a birthday treat.
