Lovely hotel with beautiful grounds. Visited recently for a wedding - excellent choice for a wedding venue. Hotel staff very friendly and helpful. Rooms are clean and furnished well. There are plenty of options to choose from during breakfast. Overall thoroughly enjoyed out stay.

A disappointing 5 night stay

Set in beautiful grounds, this old hotel is in need of refurbishment of public and private areas. Entrance shabby, on arrival reception were overwhelmed with the arrival of a coach party. Our rooms not ready, one and three quarter's hour wait for one of them, unable to make a dinner reservation for 6.30 because of priority given to coach party. 8pm too late for our older digestive systems, persistence resulted in a 6pm booking. Bedrooms comfortable, if basic, (two doubles for single occupancy), dirty windows with many cobwebs. Key card for one of the rooms failed on 5 occasions. It was the restaurant that really spoilt our stay. Dinner menu the same every night, rather like a chain public house venue. One of us has an intolerance to garlic & onion, of the 11 dishes only 1 was suitable, fish & chips. The other one, Steak, was unavailable every evening. £22 allowance made for dinner, anything else charged to account. This was not advised on the original booking, when inclusive figure was quoted. At breakfast, powdered substitute used for scrambled egg, buffet cooked food barely warm, items not replenished when coach party in, and would not expect "squeezy" packets of jam and marmalade from a supposed 4 star. The whole place had a "tired" and "stark" feeling about it, with an air of management not being on top of things. An entrance leading from lounge to terrace was littered with cigarette butts. We feel this hotel suffers from being part of a large chain, working within strict guidelines which lead to a feeling of it being only suitable for an overnight stay for commercial travellers. We did write to the General Manager expressing our dissatisfaction, and he has taken the trouble to reply. However, we feel the response is typical of a corporate entity, a lot of words but probably no action. Therefore, feel this report is justified to tell others that this hotel is not the place to be for other than a one night stay.
