lacklustre hotel way past its prime

We were looking forward to our stay in The Mercure Tunbridge Wells, but unfortunately the hotel did not live up to expectations. As a wheelchair user we had no option but to book an accessible classic room. The room was tiny and not at all suitable for accessible use. The bed was too high to comfortably get into , although once in it was extremely comfortable .However there was insufficient manoeuvring space within the room and equally in the bathroom very little thought had gone into assisting people with disabilities. The room itself was ,nonetheless, spotlessly clean however the décor of the room left a lot to be desired and looked old and tired, with bits of the carpet almost threadbare. Equally the room could have done with a coat of paint etc. Moving on to staff the reception staff were mostly very helpful and friendly, there was one gentleman who's attitude was clearly questionable and was most unhelpful towards myself when trying to pick up a parcel for myself from reception. Until I showed him a photo of the delivery he denied knowledge of its existence and then miraculously it appeared. Overall however the vast majority of staff we spoke to were friendly and helpful. We did not eat at the hotel as we felt prices were too steep and not much choice ended up going into Pembury for meals. Likewise returning late to the hotel we did try to get a drink at the bar but it was closing at 10pm just as we arrived. To summarise I fail to see how this hotel has four stars, it certainly needs modernisation.

It was ok, but not good enough to want to return. Couldn’t use the pool because only available at dinner time. Rooms are looking tired. Bathrooms especially.

Had a nice stay, lovely comfortable bed , good breakfast lots of choice. Could not have a swim until 18:00 which was not ideal but pool was lovely and warm .

The staff and management provided excellent attention to detail when dealing with special dietary requirements. They have a great way to track individually prepared food in a busy kitchen/ dining room. My partner felt very safe and well catered for.

Only one towel in the bathroom and that was a hand towel. My husband asked reception for more towels to be given two more hand towels eventually a nice man from the restaurant managed to find some bath towels and mat. The mattress topper was very stained - on both sides. The room was on 1st floor with no lift. The sofa was very old and worn. Heated towel rail in bathroom had a note to say "Caution very hot" it was cold. The whole place was shabby and in need of refurbishment.

Good location, and a good swimming pool though time was restricted. Would be worth the value if the pool also open in the morning. The room was clean but decoration was tired. It wasn't wedding season I wished the hotel can be more flexible of check out time.

Found some staff wasn't very helpful. Didn't have breakfast what was in the package deal as had to book a time. Unfortunately had woken up late. Key didn't work everytime I went back to the room and I was staying on the second floor had to keep walking back to the receptionist. Had no idea what the hotel offered it didn't get mentioned to me. Found the whole experience uncomfortable. Which is a shame because the Hotel itself is beautiful.

Your booking system apparently was down after a nightmare day had to wait to find a rooms . Was finally found one. Booked a meal to find that you didn't have what I wanted you had run out. Far below expectations.

The standard has gone down immensely since I have last stayed at the same hotel. Jacuzzi,sauna and steam room wasn’t working at all. They should remove pictures from their website about the leisure facilities as they can’t provide those.

Rooms and most of hotel are extremely dated and in dire need of refurbishment. Having said that, it was clean. Had an issue with the booking which was eventually sorted out by front of house. It was part of a virgin experience that could not be accessed for the evening meal so we were questioned on this. Plus we were not booked in for breakfast despite paying for an extra night stay at B&B rate. Again this was sorted out but initially embarrassing at the restaurant!

Hotel was welcoming and very clean. Room was pleasant. We were a bit disappointed with the food. There was a lack of taste in the tandoori dish and in the elements of the cooked breakfast. I the chef buying cheap ingredients? The pool was great but the very restricted opening hours were frustrating. Overall a pleasant stay.

Great Staff but a strange management choice

Great staff, nice hotel but the pool was only open to guests between 6pm and 8pm which is a strange time as guests are either yet to return or are preparing to go out for dinner. Surely 7am to 9am would be a better 2 hour slot for a pre-breakfast swim. Also, no safe pedestrian access off the site, we had to walk down the roadway when going out at night. But all the staff were great, helpful and friendly.
