The Mercure Hotel, Wigan is a good mid-scale hotel. It is only a few minutes by taxi or a 15 minute walk from Wigan North Western Station. My wife and I stayed between Christmas and the New Year - not the most exciting time in any hotel - but we were warmly welcomed. Check-in ( and check-out) were simplicity itself. Our room was spacious, with an enormous, comfortable bed, a work desk and a spacious bathroom. The shower was great, really exfoliating the skin. My only complaint about the room would be the lack of storage space for clothes. You do have to live out of a suitcase. The breakfast was good with a choice of hot and cold food. We liked the fact that coffee / tea was brought to the table rather than having to queue at a machine. The only reason I haven't scored excellent for the hotel is that we were informed, on arrival, that the restaurant was closed for the duration of our stay and having read some reviews, we were looking forward to eating there. In the event, not knowing Wigan at all and not having a car, we were reduced to eating in Wetherspoons! Hopefully, should we need to visit Wigan again we will be able to enjoy the meals others have made positive comments about.

The hotel we have stayed many times and is very convenient and good. The breakfast re confirmed to us to never order again.

We've stayed at this hotel previously, so we knew what to expect. The room was ready a half hour early, so that's always a nice bonus. The room was just fine, as expected, as previous, I requested a quiet room so we were well away from the lift. Breakfast was available until 10am which is nice, being on a leisure mini break, so, no rush, I always like that at this hotel (knowing from previous visits) you can request fried eggs which are cooked to order (didn't spot this information on a notice this time). We arrived for breakfast just before 9.30am, but it definitely felt like it was the end of service, there was just us in the dining area and we had a table tucked in an awkward corner where you can hardly pull your chair out due to the awkward angle of the dividing panelling, so my husband sat on an angle to the table. There were just 4 pieces of bacon left for us both, (so just 2 apiece on the all you can eat breakfast) the toast machine was switched off well before we had finished, (maybe we could have been told, "we're ending breakfast service, if you would like anymore toast/anything else, before discovering it had been taken away and was no longer available). Overall we dont take long, we're no trouble, we just take whatever's on offer, we don't complain, we didn't pay a great deal for it, so....... Breakfast was acceptable! But it wasn't as enjoyable as on previous occasions.

Check in was fine - room was disgraceful. Bathtub rusting, stank of smoke, bed creaking, toilet seat loose, carpet dirty. For £100/night in WIGAN, this was unacceptable

We have stayed with you many times and always had a good experience so it is with great regret we have to complain about this stay when we arrived lots of people smoking out side reception the front of the hotel’s looked dirty reception was not welcoming but when we got upstairs to our room all good had a nice room and a good night sleep came down for breakfast tables were not laid properly only one young girl on duty who did not know what she was doing still had some fruit to start with no spoon on tables so when we found waitresses took 5mins asked for spoon went up for English breakfast fried eggs wear rock hard and burnt but waitress argued with us that they had just been put out got back to table bacon sausage was cold poor to say the least not helped buy attitude of staff

The room was standard in all respects. No wardrobe but there was a hanging rail. The bed was large and comfortable. Heating was adequate. One of the lights did not work. The bathroom was only adequate. The basin and the towel rails were made for six foot guests. The shower screen leaked. Hotel staff were courteous and helpful.

Very good but bathroom fan disturbed sleep

The bathroom fan stayed on all night which was quite load. It also made a clicking noise. This disturbed my sleep throughout the night. Is the fab supposed to stay on or is it faulty? Normally bathroom fans only come on when the light is switched on and go off shortly after switching off the light ....this didn't happen and the fan stayed on all night even though all lights were off. This was a shame as otherwise we were really happy with our room and bee etc.

The room was well priced for my stay. The reception staff were friendly and efficient. The room was clean and tidy. It only had one electrical socket in the room and none near the bed.

Very welcoming at the desk to dogs, comfy bed and a good overall stay. The lighting in the room was not great and you just bring your own dog bed and water bowl but they provided dog treats at reception to relax our dog and were extremely helpful with getting taxis etc.

The room met all my main requirements, notably it was clean quiet and everything worked. The breakfast, however, was a disappointment. The sausage, bacon, eggs and tomatoes were all cold. They had all been lying in the trays for some time. Also I had to make my own toast. If I visit Wigan again, I will certainly stay at the Mercure, but it will be on a "room only" basis.

Poor Sleep

The general facilities were fine but the room was very stuffy, the pillows were hard and worst of all there was a lot of metallic banging and clanking from 6am on. At first I thought it was the plumbing (could even hear people peeing in other rooms), but when I went to open the window to get some air the noise increased and I saw some sort of big plant or engine house from the back window, seemingly part of the hotel structure. This is hopeless. I started the day with a bad headache and would not recommend anyone who is a light sleeper stay with you I am afraid, until you sort out the noise nuisance. Greatly liked the staff though.

Walls so thin that you can hear snoring and peeing

It was the first time I had a neighbour in the hotel, and I could hear every word he said in his room, showering, peeing (!) and snoring (!). Not sure which one is more disgusting. I didn’t sleep well because how can you sleep well hearing someone snoring all night (bleh). Also, quality of food is still low, no proper vegan options. Unfortunately, this hotel is the only one that is relatively close to the train station and my client, doesn’t look super bad l... and I just have to stay in it.
