The room was nice, and the location lovely. There was an abundance of parking. Unfortunately, one day into a weekend stay, the water stopped working. I wasn’t given a real explanation, and then when I asked again in the evening, I was told it would not be fixed until Monday and to go to the health club or reception to use facilities. This is not an adequate response, and I am very disappointed that no compensation was offered, and no real apology for one of the key components to any hotel stay. I would stay again as the hotel was nice as I said and convenient, but the water issue and it’s response, as well as the lack of even any compensation offered has left a very sour taste in my mouth.

The windows in the room were held tightly closed by two pieces of inserted wallpaper. The 2nd night after going to the room, the toilet wouldn't flush, the taps in the sink and the shower didn't work. I called reception to be told "I thought everyone knew", when I replied no, the response emaa "on your side of the hotel , theres a problem so no water until tomorrow, goodnight". No sanitation seems to be an essential service. No other room or hotel was offered/proposed. I'm quite disgusted. I will be demanding a refund.

Horrific Experience

The first room offered had a damp problem, the wall was covered in mould and dripping with water, the window had been left open and radiator on to disguise the awful smell. The second room was ok but in the morning we discovered that there was no running water in the taps, toilet, shower or bath. We were told that the building we were in didn’t have water, we were given a card to another room so that we could wash and use the toilet. It was so humiliating walking through reception and the breakfast room with our bags at 9am. When we reached the third room we had to wait in the corridor for 20 minutes as it was being cleaned, again a humiliating and embarrassing experience. Once in, we discovered that this room also had damp issues and mould all over the ceiling. We had our showers and could not wait to vacate the hotel. The whole stay was worse than you could imagine and I think that the hotel is an absolute disgrace. The decor is beyond tired and feels oppressive and has left myself and my husband extremely upset. This was meant to be a special weekend for the two of us but we have been let down by not even having the basic amenities such as water. I would highly recommend that this hotel is investigated as I would hate to think of anyone else having the same experience.

Hotel is an older building with character which is nice etc etc but it doesn't have a lift. This was never mentioned on the web site, in the booking process or by the check in staff. It would be very preferable that it was mentioned so that we were prepared or able to seek, perhaps, a ground floor room. My wife can manage stairs but prefers to avoid them where possible

My friend and I were visiting my friends sister. The hotel was within easy walking distance from her house, and was very close to the train station. Our twin room was very clean and comfortable, and the staff were friendly and accommodating. We enjoyed a hearty breakfast and will definitely recommend to our family and friends

Thought I was booking for the 20th June but it booked me for the 19th Feb. They had it away with £174 for nothing and the pompous arse of a manager couldn’t give a damn. No empathy. No, let’s see what we can do. Just tough we’ve got your money and we don’t care. Apparently they are in the hotel business not the people business. So for £174 I got no room, no breakfast, just a bill. First and last time I ever go near an Accor hotel. If your planning on staying, check your paperwork and keep a good eye on your wallet. Would suggest that the so called manager went on a course in humility and empathy because he sadly lacks it. Don’t use the website because it books you for the wrong days but still charges you. Beware!!!

Met our needs for overnight stay and value for money. Bit fed up in the evening we could only get out of date Valentines meal and no bar menu even though people before us had the bar menu ??a bit confused/confusing asked three times and got same unsatisfactory answer. Bathroom way too hot and no way to reduce heat ?

Noisy fire door open all of the time and causing banging of internal door

We stayed in room 64 near the fire door which was always open and caused the nearest internal door to keep banging a lot. I reported this on our first night , and was told by a you y lady on reception that the fire door would be shut at 9 this never happened. Thus led to an internal door between the fire door and our room beside this door banging all during the night. I slept bur my wife could not. The next day was just the same. I went to reception twice and mentioned the door, a young tall lad was very helpful and came along immediately. He came and put a rubber wedge to keep the internal door open. During the night it started to bang again and I got up and pit a rolled up paler wedge under the rubber wedge to raise it up and make it more effective. My wife did not want to wake me when the wedge came out as we had a long drive back to the North East that day. I realise that we stayed in a windy weekend 9-11th Feb, however, I never once saw the fire door closed, it was obviously used for access by cleaning staff as a short cut. I did mention that we felt very vulnerable with this door being open all of the time but felt that this was of little consequence. I think the fire door cannot be closed as it seems well past operational use. It probably needs to be replaced. This is our first stay at Bowden House, not certain we will return. I am an Aacor silver card holder and have used mercure a lot in various locations fir work.
