Great Option for a Stopover

Salvador isn’t really on the tourism radar but it is a gateway to places that are, such as Chapada Diamantina National Park. We overnighted at the Novotel Aeroporto Hangar, a $US12 taxi ride from the airport. This relatively expensive hotel ($US120) is worth the price. There is nothing that can be said against it. Everything is where it should be and everything works. The room is a decent size with a large bed, nice bathroom and good water pressure from the shower. An excellent breakfast is included. There is a restaurant onsite and a large supermarket next door if you require any snacks or supplies for onward travel. There are taxis at the door. The service overall is excellent. For anyone heading to Salvador, this hotel is a superb choice for accommodation. Check out my other reviews of places, hotels and experiences throughout South America.

I stayed here for almost two weeks, during which I experienced a good attitude related with the service that were provided. I'm rating this experience with 5/5. I was attended very good by: Magno, Fred, Eva, Gabriel and Gleidson. The food was also very good and tasty.

Disappointing Property, Deplorable Customer Service for Business Travellers and Afro-Brazilian Cultural Tourists

The Novotel Salvador Hangar Aeroporto best features are its location near the airport, newer facilities than most properties in Salvador, and it operates under the ACCOR hotel brand. Despite these advantages, I must report a unacceptable experience during my stay December 28th to 31st 2022 followed by deplorable managerial customer service in response to verified and documented service failures. I have reported these issues to my travel agency, my corporate travel unit, and my personal travel networks. As I discovered this property using Trip Advisor, I have decided to report this matter for the benefit of my fellow readers. I do not recommend this property for business travelers nor cultural tourism travelers (especially not those seeking afro-Brazilian tourism or those welcoming to the African diaspora). I share some reasons herein: • Unreliable Service: During my stay I experienced one major internet outage over six business hours, as well as minor room outages (less than 30 minutes) on each day of my stay. This hotel was advertised as catering to business travelers, but the hotel provided no updates when internet would be restored despite repeated requests. I did not receive any support to manage the disruption to my teleworking, and personnel were unable/unwilling to facilitate solutions (At one point, I was recommended to use the free internet of one of the shopping malls. Imagine carrying expensive computer equipment to what my taxi driver warned was a “high crime” area). Sadly, the ability of the reception staff to identify solutions was more unreliable than the internet service. • Poor Room Quality: This hotel advertises rooms of high standards of quality, and I am sure many receive good rooms. However, I received a room that was both substandard quality (bathroom sidings and interior furniture water damaged, door malfunction, refrigerator malfunction) and pollutted by the buildings HVAC exhaust being poorly designed, allowing exhaust to flow against rooms on the lower floor (high noise pollution noticeable when sleeping). I believe most guests do not have this experience, as the issue likely affects few rooms on the lower floors. However, when choosing this property, one must ask the question, how does the receptionist decide who receives these rooms which experience high dust inflow and high noise pollution (I have videos and photos available upon request). Why are some customers placed in quality rooms, and others assigned to substandard rooms (noting the hotel has standard room types based on bed requirements)? Why did this hotel property assume that one of their few afro-descendent customers would accept the worst room in the property? • Deplorable Managerial Level Customer Service: Upon checkout, a customer service representative noted my dissatisfaction with my hotel experience, and asked if I would be willing to receive inquires from hotel management the next business day. I did not have confidence in their customer service but gave the hotel one last opportunity to demonstrate concern for my poor experience. I left my contact information, but days passed without response. Subsequently, my travel agent asked me to share my experience, and I informed them off all the problems I had with this hotel, and shared evidence of each failure to deliver accommodation service as advertised. Upon seeing all the evidence, my agent concluded I should receive a full refund and contacted the hotel property to discuss the matter. I did not request this solution but was informed the hotel management rejected my travel agents request without reviewing the documented evidence. Therefore, I decided to contact ACCOR customer service to request their mediation in the matter. After several e-mails initially promising to address the matter, I was offered one free night accommodation as compensation. I informed the hotel manager this option was not acceptable to me, because I did not plan to return to the hotel in 2023. I proposed an alternative solution would be to receive one night reimbursement of the cost of my stay, or one night equivalent in ACCOR points. The hotel manager agreed to compensate with points, and eventually added 4,750 points to my account, equivalent to 62% of what I paid for one night. The hotel manager only informed me of this AFTER repeated emails (knowing this was not what was agreed). The hotel manager could have closed this matter within 24 hours following my departure but choose to delay the issue for weeks, and eventually failed to deliver what was agreed. I should mention what I most wanted to see was genuine concern for the failure, and not half-measures to get rid of my complaint (the points or even one night accommodation mean little to me). If the hotel manager had contacted me on the day his receptionist said he would, I would never have reached the point where I am compelled to expose this poor behavior in all my travel networks. There is much more I can share about why those interested in afro-Brazilian culture should support the boycott of this hotel. Additionally, I can also share recommendations of the best Salvador hotels for business and culture travelers.

Food was great. Try the moleka. Be ready to wait, but it is worth it . Music is good and service very friendy. Im staying at the hotel, but makes sense to come directly to the restaurant. Btw, salvador is angreat city to visit. Great service by Allian…!

HOMOPHOBIC HOTEL. If you are LGBTQI+ or an ally, please avoid this hotel. My wife and I stayed here and our stay was stressful and embarrassing. The staff is arrogant and impolite. During check-in, they charged us an extra bed fee because we're a two women couple, although we had paid for a queen bed.
