The 4-star Mercure Southampton Centre Dolphin is a 99 bedroom Grade II listed hotel which has stood at the heart of the city for over 500 years. The hotel offers a modern and contemporary feel, while retaining its traditional appeal. Many of its original features have been preserved boasting two of the largest bay windows in the UK making the two meeting and event suites light and airy.

The Dolphin Hotel dates back to over 500 years, serving throughout this time as a welcome place to rest for weary travellers. The hotel was visited by the 'nobility and gentry' and even royalty. Most famous guests included Jane Austen. We arrived at 2pm and was able to check in. I asked for rooms near each other. Staff was able to fulfill our request with rooms next to each other. We felt the rooms were a little dated and need some refreshing. Front desk staff was very nice. Location was right in the city and very convenient.

Separate from the hotel near the car park on ground floor - unfortunately i didnt feel safe as a woman travelling alone in a ground floor room when i couldnt lock the door from the inside...I didnt ask to chwange as thought I would leave a chair in front of the door. The bathroom was the best thing about the downstairs room I was in - v clean and modern Durting the night from 2330 onwards there was a scratching or creaking that sounded as if there were rats in the walls. I had 0 sleep and will not be staying again thank you anyway

Very well located

On arrival we checked in and due to my personal circumstances changing I had to bunk in with my mate whilst his wife and her friend tool the Accure room. Having been given room 201 it would have been helpful had the receptionist told us there was a lift just around the corner instead of sending us up the stairs. Other than that we didn't really use the hotel bar so I won't comment. The hotel itself was ideally placed for our visit to attend a Fish gig at the 1865 club and with the "Spoons" practically Nextdoor and the Indian across the road all our needs were met.

The room we were in needed updating badly. We were also told we had to move to another hotel as the Dolphin was closing for 3 months due to the fact it was housing immigrants so found this both disgusting and inconvenient.

Disappointing

A group of 9 of us booked in for 2 nights, travelling from different parts of the Country, to attend a Memorial Service at the Fepow Memorial on one day and the funeral of a friend the next day. We woke up after the first night to find a note under the doors telling us that we would be moved to another hotel for the next night. We were later told this was bcause there were 300 Afghan refugees coming into the hotel and they needed our rooms !!!! Needless to say we were not pleased with the hassle of repacking etc. We understand the need for accommodation for these people but why book us in when this was going to happen??

A bit tired

Room was large and clean, but gloomy and in need of a refurb. Breakfast was OK, but not what it used to be when you could have items cooked to order - Covid, I guess! Car park was packed and chaos as usual, but a system to ensure use by residents only is apparently being introduced

Worst hotel ever

This is honestly the worst experience I've ever had at a hotel. I checked in on Sunday and left the Friday. My room was not serviced at all during my stay. I even had to go to reception and request toilet paper. How embarrassing. I did however have a staff member come into my room and open the window. A massive security red flag. For something displayed as 4 star I think a police holding cell has better amenities. Its rundown and dilapidated and loaded with disappointment. I honestly expected more.

Broken radiator was fixed whilst I was out. It was fixed but still on max setting. TV didn't work. Changed rooms at 9pm. WhatsApp was offered as communication but no one answered it. New room had a shabby bathroom. Extraction vent covered in dust. Towel hook on back of door had been ripped off. Shower head flew about when shower was on. Gives very little confidence anything is actually cleaned as obviously no one but cleaners goes in the rooms.

Good points...Nice breakfast and easy check in process with friendly staff. Bad points... Fairly dated room (particularly carpets and paintwork). Horrible high pitched whistle at all times from a fan or something nearby. Difficult to sleep through. And one night other guests were screaming at each other in the early hours. And £5 per night parking. OTT.

Well located but the hotel is dated

The room that was given to us was awful. Heating didn’t work and every place you walked in the room the floorboards creaked and it was a very noisy room. We changed rooms, however, sat on a chair and it sunk down, the shower fitting was coming off the wall, shower head extremely dirty with limescale, water from the shower goes everywhere. The safe was not secured to the wall in the cupboard and therefore could be carried out of the room. The breakfast was not good. The hot food was cold and not a great selection of cereals. Unfortunately until they refurbish the rooms will not be staying here again.
