Lovely old world hotel, not normally associated with the Mecure brand. Room was a single, and did not have that Mercure branded feeling. I asked for an upgrade but the none was offered. Good breakfast that met all expectations.

So comfortable and I was really made to feel welcome

The George is in a great central location. The rooms are always clean and comfortable and the staff give you a great welcome. There is something for everyone at breakfast and the dining is very reasonably priced

Overall the experience was good. The rooms are old and in need of some refurbishment and my single room really was a single room! The bathroom was almost the same size as my room. It is a historic building and this needs to be taken into account. The staff were very pleasant and helpful and the room was clean and breakfast was good.

Bedrooms appear to have been recently refurbished but old furniture. My room also only had a view of a brick wall. Public areas smelt either of curry or damp. Restaurant / bar service not of a good standard.

1/ Arrival: “sorry, system is very slow” 2/ Overnights: doors not locking, each single noise from the corridor wakes you up 3/ Bathroom: all equipment old and not renovated for years 4/ Room: minimalistic equipment 5/ Internet: does not exist (although internal WiFi covers all areas) 6/ On-site kitchen: catering Comparing to “European” Accor standards I would say this place is below “Ibis Budget” level. Keep smiling :) - this is Victorian Style!

Very noisy outside (I realise it's beyond the control of the hotel). Hotel needs some desperate refurbishment - paint is peeling etc. The wifi is not easy to connect to in the rooms, it took the gentleman on reception to show me how to do it - it would probably help if either they explain that to customers as they check in (as there's lots of references to the wifi on trip advisor) or even better get the issue sorted out with whoever deals with your wifi and communications there. Breakfast was pretty uninspiring. But all the staff were very polite and helpful.

There are better hotels at the same price, the george is very dated, carpet furniture etc

Checking was smooth and reception staff pleasant and helpful. The room was fine and fairly spacious, if a little too warm. However:- 1 - Restaurant area not defined - Dickens bar & restaurant + Bhel Pur. We had fish ‘n’ chips for our dinner but it was like supermarket fish ‘n’ chips - nothing special and small portions. 2 - When we returned from a concert at the Hexagon, in Reading, at about 10.40pm we were told that the bar was closing - begrudgingly the staff member agreed, after we told her we were staying at the hotel, to make us coffee, she then left the bar. 3- Breakfast - No meet and greet to seat. Cooked breakfast was cold and undercooked. Beans were covered but the scrambled eggs were not and went cold quickly. When being replenished new food was put on top of old and was touched by bare hand.

grubby, cramped and unloved room

I wasn't satisfied with this stay and it's put me off coming again. The room [107] was cramped, the telephone didn't work, two of the four lights I the tiny bath room weren't working. There were finger nail clippings on the bathroom floor; the room was poorly lit and generally grubby. Selecting TV channels is fiddly and I had to ask at reception how to use the Wi-Fi... which actually was rubbish.
