We were moved to the Ibis Styles hotel, so review relates to that hotel.

Allocated THE most noisy room in the hotel (Rm120) with the stairwell outside the door and a very very noisy thoroughfare outside the windows, which were fully closed! Staff were delightful. Hotel is poor even with the cheaper room rates.

Great Central Location and Wonderful Staff

I always try to stay at the George Hotel when I visit Reading. It’s a lovely place, great facilities and superb location. But best of all are the staff and management team, they simply make you feel at home and it’s wonderful !!

The hotel was very drab in my opinion it wasn't the cleanest and there were no tea or coffee making facilities or was there, a breakfast which I'd paid, extra for

I am an employee of Network Rail and I travel up and down the country staying in hotels that are on our system which includes several Mercure Hotels. The George at Reading will be taken off our, list of favoured hotels as it is in need of upgrade, in my opinion, and the, facilities at best were very poor. It wasn't made clear that there would be no hit breakfast and there would, be no tea or coffee in the morning. The room (406) was OK but really hot with only a small fan provided. There were 2 of us,staying and only 1 large towel was in the room when we arrived.

Stayed in the George hotel for 2 nights and was very disappointed. Room very hot, had a fan but you could not leave it on overnight as too noisy. Air conditioning needed. Requested to move room but was told none available. Breakfast was very disappointing for £12.60 you got a box of cereals, muffin and small carton of orange juice. Would definitely not book a room with breakfast included if I knew this was what you were going to get.

We came and stayed gorc2 night from 23rd August. We were very disappointed to find out that breakfast was to be collected and taken back to room. To then find this breakfast consisted of a small box of cereals, a chocolate muffin and a carton of orange juice. This was when restrictions had relented and restaurants could open. I could understand if they were short of staff and a notice had been put up and breakfast given for free. Certainly not worth £12.50 Also our room was ridiculously hot it was not particularly warm outside but our room definitely was. You could tell the difference when you walked up the last flight of stairs. We had a fan but as quite noisy you could not leave it on overnight. Air conditioning needed in these rooms. Ask for a different room but was told none available. Not a very enjoyable experience.

A nice stay but nothing in the room was as advertised as superior and breakfast was pathetic.

Clean and comfortable

I was very pleased with the customer service, despite the room u booked being unavailable on arrival. The room was clean but there were shabby bits of paint here and there. The only disappointment was that bar was closed on arrival and the breakfast. For the price, I would expect more than a box of cereal, uht milk and a muffin in a paper bag. It went in the bin! Would stop again but bed only.

Well located historic building with free upgrade

We'd had Premier Inn let us down with a booking, so had to book somewhere last minute in Reading. The Mercure came up through, so we went for this. Absolutely delighted when we arrived - we love historic buildings and the small display about Charles Dickens staying on the site was of interest. You can clearly see the old coaching in design using a corner building. Even better was the free upgrade from a double room to an executive suite, which proved outstanding value for money. A nice four poster bed, large bathroom with shower and bath, and a separate living room meant that we really enjoyed our stay. The hotel is very well located. Although there is not parking on site, there is overnight parking from an NCP car park very close which costs less than £4 if you move the car before 8am overnight. Just round the corner is The Oracle eating complex by the river. This was very good - we recommend the Lebanese restaurant there but there is something for everyone. Should you wish to eat on site, the hotel has its own Indian restaurant which we would check out in the future. The only downside is that this is an old building which lots of stairs up and down, and uneven floors in some places which mean that disabled access could be a problem. Nevertheless, we would highly recommend this to other travellers, and definitely plan to come back./

This was probably one of the worst Accor stays I have had anywhere in the world and I always use your hotels from Germany to Hong Kong. I got back to the Hotel at 8:30pm, the bar was already closed and no offer of alternative Ie room service, (I had not been given my drinks voucher either). My room which I had an upgrade (thanks) was hot and thus had to open window and thus was noisy when the bins were emptied at 5:30 in the morning (understand it is an old building and a/c difficult. To top it all somebody opened my door at 6am and started to come in..... That was the breaking point. This is the first time I have ever had to complain ... this hotel is now off my list

Centrally Located!!

I know I was staying during the pandemic, but I don't think I will ever be coming back again. First I wasn't told on arrival that breakfast was a carrier bag with a carton of juice and milk, a dried muffin, a small variety pack of corn flakes or special K, a yoghourt and an apple. This I found out at breakfast the next day! This hotel had been booked through an agent and we were all quoted the same price, yet on arrival we were told that the rooms would be costing another £37 each for the 3 night stay. We challenged this and it was left up to the on duty staff member to sort it out. It was resolved, but not very satisfactory. It is an old listed building, but the bath seemed to take ages to drain whilst having a shower and it seemed to smell of the drains when I returned in the afternoons. There was only 1 clothes hanger in the wardrobe for a 3 day stay? I really don't see me coming back to this Hotel again! That is a shame because its in a central location and my previous stays over 4 years ago had been fine!

Comfortable centrally located hotel

Comfortable and surprisingly quiet hotel - given the central location. Perfect for Reading shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants. No cooked breakfast but you can have a breakfast in a bag which you collect from reception and there are plenty of cafes within a few minutes walk of the hotel- including one which was in the same building as the hotel. I would definitely stay here again. Did Charles Dickens stay here? Maybe. Did he have the breakfast in the bag? Almost certainly.

Very pleasant. After being allocated a room that hadn't been serviced, and then having a telly in the second room that was brand new and hadn't been set up, everything else was perfect. Very helpful staff.

Really like the hotel. The Manager was extremely welcoming and couldn't do enough for me during my stay. Had all the basics you would expect from a hotel. The only reason I marked it down, was that the rooms were a little shabby. Old, wooden furniture, dripping tap, broken bathroom fixtures (and I had a superior room). Nothing major or drastic, but the hotel definitely could use some TLC. You can see they've made a effort with some of the decor, but the room wasn't the sort of place I would want to spend a lot of time in. However, the hotel dates back to 1411 and it has beautiful character and many original features, so wouldn't want it to change that much!

Beautiful hotel sadly now in poor repair

The hotel is lovely and the building historic, the amenities are not great and the state of repair is getting worse. From radiators that don't work to rust in the sink, it just needs a bit of a face lift. We had to move rooms because the first room smelled bad (likely to do with the plumbing). There was no information about covid measures being taken and I am not sure any were.
