Had a nice stay at the Mercure in Banbury. Helped with luggage as the lift starts on floor 1, breakfast was delicious; friendly and helpful kitchen and general staff. Did book a deal with dinner on the first night but because they had a wedding reception on, I couldn't have the free dinner which was v disappointing. The second night I had already arranged to eat out.

Just to start I will NOT be putting this awful experience on trip advisor. This is not about destroying you. We have been in the industry in the past (retired now) and were successful and sold out to a corporate so we know what we are talking about and suggest Management take this review seriously. You have very real issues. On arrival circa 1:30pm we were told our upgraded room was not ready till 3pm (being cleaned). This is important. Returning after 3pm we checked in, up to the room, immediately hit by staleness and musty smell. The room has enormous potential with a wonderful fireplace and stone windows. Really with what became clear in the short time we stayed, we should have complained and left. But we use these breaks as a stop and explore the area/see the town. Why should you have to move, this stuff should be basic. Over the next day and a half this is fact about the room and we have pictures to prove it; -Huge spiders web in the window with Charlotte sitting right in the centre. Took a long time to build this. Certainly not an hour since the room was ‘cleaned’ -A bathroom your Nan would have been proud of in the 60’s. Dirty. -Shampoo bottle (not plural) almost empty, clearly used. -Pubic hair from your previous guests on the bathroom floor. Nice. -One tiny foot towel in the whole room and en suite. Yes one. -One bathrobe in the cupboard. -One pair of slip-ons. -A TV so small in the distance from the bed it just didn’t fit. Tried to move the draws it was on closer as far as the sort lead would allow. -Mould in the fridge. Fridge didn’t work. -Pretty much a full biscuit crushed in the cupboard. The room was not cleaned or tidied the following day. The bedsheets were actually clean and fine but the mattress was spent. Now the restaurant. Breakfast. -one two slice toaster for a whole hotel. -beans were like a solidified cake. -scrambled eggs, what was left solid. -fried eggs were ordered when I got two back to the table they were snotty and not edible. A chef that can’t fry an egg? We left and grabbed something up the road. Dinner. Thought we would chance it. -part of the deal was a glass of prosecco. No prosecco. -play it safe, order simple food. Soup to start. 50 minutes after ordering with just a few people in the restaurant no sign of it coming close to being served looking around at other faces so just got up and left. Went somewhere else. One chef doing absolutely everything apparently. Breakfast next morning. Wasn’t putting up with this again. Café on the corner. Upon check out Emma refunded everything and rightly so. Looked pretty horrified. The staff we met both in restaurant/bar spoke to us as they knew we had left our meals. We thought the staff we met were absolutely fine. Pleasant. Polite. They are just being given nothing to work with. No foundations whatsoever and no backing. Being hung out to dry. The blame for the state of this hotel lies solely with Management. The potential in this hotel is astonishing. A younger myself would have loved to get hold of it. Locations/character/garden/bar/history it’s got the lot. Just been left to rot. Sacrilege.

Stayed as at a wedding snd to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Room in the original building ✔️ Breakfast included ✔️ Hot water ✔️ However…… no towels, half a loo roll, phone didn’t work to call reception, TV didn’t work and chap on reception rude! But I must say Rev in the bar/restaurant fantastic! His level of customer service is above and beyond and is a waste at a “ok” hotel!

When we arrived the hotel looked great, service good, but internals not so good, we found our room decorations needed redecorating, does not come up to expectations with a big name company. Very disappointed, we left early as our own home had more appeal.

Great stay in an excellent location. The rooms were clean and the food was to a high standard. My only concern were the stairs from a health and safety aspect. I would suggest that warning tape be placed on the edge of the first and last stairs or any single stairs.

Our room was at the front of the hotel so whilst quaint and spacious it was noisy at times, especially first thing in the morning. Tea and coffee facilities were Ok but TV did not work. All of our party (3rooms) had to ask for extra towels which were not very large and quite rough. Breakfast was good with plenty of variety but the hotel was not able to cater for our group of 15 for dinner due to delivery issues. Fortunately there is an Italian restaurant less than 5 minutes away and a Mexican 5minutes away both of which were excellent.

Friends bought us a stay at the hotel to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary, on arrival the gentleman on reception was very friendly and polite. We were given our room key, a double room for my wife and myself, two people, the room have one towel, the carpet had not been vacuumed, the bathroom had black hairs including pubic hair, we both have blond hair, there was rubbish in the bathroom bin from the last occupants, I have my doubts that the bed had the sheets changed. After showering (sharing a single towel) we went to reception to advise, again he was polite and said he would look himself and get it resolved, we went to the bar for a drink, it took an age for someone to come, I went to seek a member of staff to ask if the bar was open, I bumped into a chap with hoover in hand who advised he was on route to clean my room, and that someone would be at the bar soon, I returned to the bar a lady arrived at the bar, then left saying I will get someone to serve you. My wife wanted Sauvignon wine, there was none? She selected an alternate drink, which was given FOC. Included in our stay was an evening meal, we attended the restaurant, ordered a starter to share with the intention that we would also share a desert, starter came all seemed fine, we ordered ribeye steak, 10 minutes later we were advised sorry all the ribeye is gone, I sirloin ok, we advised yes, another 30 minutes passed, we were approached to enquire if we would like to order a desert, we advised not until after our main course, which is yet to arrive? The person apologised 10 more minutes our meals arrived, my steak was cold I only ate half of it, my wife’s was so tuff she also could only manage half of it. The windowsills and carpet were filthy in the dining hall. We were given a drink voucher each, we returned to the bar and had a drink, another guest asked my wife how her steak was, due to all the carry on this caused my wife to rush to the toilet in tears, after wiping her tears, and using the toilet she discovered that both soap dispensers in the ladies had no soap, we are still on the end of a pandemic, this is inexcusable. It’s clear that the hotel is very badly run, there appears to be a lack of staff, many people seen trying to juggle many tasks, there doesn’t appear to be any checks in place to ensure simply tasks like cleaning a room and enough towels in place for the number of guests staying in room. We of course will not allow our friends who purchased this gift for us know what a overwhelming disappointment this has been, which means we are forced to lie to them. Two staff that stood out were Emma and Maddy, they both genuinely care about customers, and it was clear to see they were distressed to see us so upset. But rest assured you will loose good staff if they are not treated right, and as previously mentioned, they were both trying to carry out numerous tasks and it was clear to see they were under pressure.

Location was good. Breakfast was very average. The first room offered was shocking. The other room was better over looking Gardens. The majority of bedrooms were built in 1970,s tenement building and to be honest do not look like it has been updated since. Window frames were disgusting and secondary double glazing Carpets were shocking, general decoration shocking. Could be a lovely hotel. Spend some money on overhaul.

The room was lovely (50) but who ever decorated left white paint on the floor and when looking up to the celling you can see all the area’s that have been missed

Pleasant stay. Room was bigger than expected. Shower was too low to stand upright under. General cleanliness is still an issue. All hotels that we have stayed in recently say they are Covid clean, but they are not free from general dirt and dust. Bed was a bit hard. Breakfast was good.

We booked last minute just to get away for a couple of night. Everything was as we expected. We have stayed a few times and always been well looked after this was no exception. Only disappointment is they seem to have stopped giving drinks vouchers and upgrades to ALL accor members.

Relaxing stay at a good value hotel. We stay here often and have never been let down. even though there was a wedding on during our first night this didn't disturb our stay. Would recommend to anyone staying in the area or looking for a cheaper option for Oxford.

I read lots of reviews on this hotel prior to arrival and I was a little worried we had not made the right choice. Our decision to stay was definitely the right one. The hotel may not be flashy but the staff and their service was far more valuable. The breakfast was great, so much to choose from and the situation of the hotel right in the middle of everywhere. Lots of different restaurants to choose from as well as plenty of shops.
