The hotel has seen better days. We booked an executive suite and on arrival were given the choice of a haunted room or the garden room! We took the garden room which could not be described as an executive suite. Problems with the suite included dirty shower curtain, cupboard doors not closing properly, very uncomfortable sofa, remote not working properly possibly due to the fact the back was missing, no light on left side of bed and the room was unbearably hot as the windows only opened a few inches. It was two very basic dark rooms with an archway between them! The breakfast was not good. The food was described as grilled but was obviously cooked in oil. The egg appeared to be powdered. The staff however were lovely and friendly.

As always, The welcome by the staff was great, and the hotel was clean and operated well under the current COVID restrictions. The room had been redecorated during the lockdown, so was bright and welcoming.

We stayed overnight at the Mercure Banbury, Whately Hall over the bank holiday weekend. The hotel itself has a lovely facade and is very well located in the centre of Banbury. The rooms are clean and the staff helpful and friendly. There is a lovely garden to the rear of the hotel, with ample seating for anyone who needs it and, although we did not eat in the hotel in the evening, the buffet breakfast in the morning was excellent, with plenty of choice, giving really good value for money.

The hotel is well located for the town centre amenities. The rooms are somewhat tired and could do with some love and attention. All the staff I encountered seemed interested in their work and were pleasent to talk to. Only had breakfast in the hotel which was plentiful and well presented. Free parking and Wi-Fi were appreciated.

There no no towels in the bathroom on arrival, & they never did actually appear. No hot water in the room. On complaint, the receptionist advised us it was an ongoing problem (but put us in the room anyway). No management in-situ in order to make a complaint to. Lots of noise from the road due to ill fitting windows.

Pleasant but tired building.

Good location but hotel and rooms in need of some tlc. Furniture in dire need of replacement as damaged/stained. The executive rooms are not worth the extra money for the sake of a dressing gown and some water. Limited choice of breakfast items. Staff very helpful and courteous though.

Great location, classic hotel with warm hospitality

Ideal location for centre of Banbury amidst nice array of shops, pubs and restaurants albeit the hotel has excellent fare and the staff are very friendly and accommodating. Standards and cleanliness are of a higher class hotel while retaining a classic hotel ‘feel’ with easy going ambiance. Plenty of parking availability in Hotel and nearby where the adjacent Peoples Park is great for a worthy and pleasant stroll. Will not hesitate to stay again, next time in Banbury.

Excellent location for Banbury centre. Free parking too. The man in reception was very friendly and helpful. We stayed in a twin garden room which was pleasant although we could hear our neighbours quite a bit. The hotel is a little dated in some communal areas but overall a very pleasant stay.

Uncomfortable, basic and disappointing

In need of better pillows and showers

Tom B. Business - 22/05/2021 Confirmed reviews ALL

I spent two nights on business, and the room - 78 I think - was tired and in need of updating. The shower head squirted water everywhere but on me, the bath tap had to be pulled away from the wall to allow it to turn and the pillows were lumpy and thin. The room was clean but I wouldn’t describe the whole experience as anything more than very average for the price. Someone needs to spend money on the rooms to bring them into the 21st century.

Our best Mercure stay so far.

Superb service from everyone we met here. Smiling helpful and chatty. We were the only people in the restuarant for dinner, the waiter was superb and the food excellent. It was just a one night stay as we had a delivery to make the next morning but would seem to be an ideal location for a stay in the Cotswolds. Considering a longer stay once Covid restrictions are removed.

Dear Rjharris1moorville, Thank you so much for taking the time in leaving us feedback following your recent stay. It is such a pleasure to receive such positive comments about our team and and customer service. I'm pleased that you were able to relax and enjoy some downtime in between your deliveries. I look forward to welcoming you back in the near future once the restrictions have been lifted. Kindest Regards Ben Dunn Hotel Manager

Stayed for only one night which was a blessing. The rooms were very cramped and in need of modernisation. The evening meal was very poor. Breakfast was decent. The staff were attentive and helpful but this hotel is in desperate need of some TLC. We won't be going back.

Dear JIFG1, Thank you for taking the time to tell us about your experience at the Mercure Banbury Whately Hall Hotel. I am sorry that your experience did not meet your expectations; please allow me to express my sincerest apologies. At Mercure, we strive to provide a superior service experience for every customer; therefore your feedback is very important to us. Please rest assured that we are taking the appropriate measures to address the problem and prevent future occurrence. I am pleased that you enjoyed your breakfast experience with us and that you found our staff to be attentive. We appreciate your sharing your concerns, and it is our hope that you will give us the opportunity to better serve you in the near future. Sincerely, Ben Dunn Hotel Manager

Customer service blunder

JedJ00 Business - 15/03/2020 TripAdvisor review

I was coming to Banbury for a course that got postponed due to coronavirus a few days before travel restrictions were imposed generally in Europe. The airline refunded my non refundable ticket outright, but this hotel refused even to let me change the dates of my stay...because they weren't legally obligated to. I contacted Accor customer service, who were also surprised by their inflexibility and contacted them on my behalf. No, they refused to budge. It was their right. *stomps foot petulantly* I wasn't seeking a refund, mind you, just a chance to move the dates when my course got rescheduled. Given the extraordinary circumstances, if they felt that moving the dates was unfair to them or to someone who paid for flexible dates, they could have offered me a partial credit on my next stay, or at least offered to cancel the dinner reservations I'd paid for in advance. I understand that they were within their legal rights to inflexibly enforce our contract, but they also have the power to make an exception when there's an international crisis afoot. I love Accor hotels and was really, really looking forward to staying in this hotel for a few nights, so it pains me to say that I almost certainly will not be staying with them when my course in Banbury is rescheduled.... unless they somehow come to their senses and try to fix this customer service blunder.

Webby20121961 Business - 06/03/2020 TripAdvisor review

I haven't stayed at the hotel for a number of years and forgot the wonderful facade facing the road belies a modern block behind. The carpets in the public areas were threadbare and whilst the staff were pleasant enough the hotel is urgently in need of some investment.

excellent service as always, very festive and very convenient for the sales in the main town. Family live local too so is very convenient. Euan on reception was excellent as well as Lynne and Emma in housekeeping, as ever.
