Comfortable and clean with great staff in all areas. Nice food in restaurant but lighting is too bright. Like a school hall !! Really tired hotel which needs lots of attention because this could be something special

My wife and I stayed for 2 nights 4/5 September 2021 - we'd not stayed at the Whately Hall Hotel before, though my parents had - 50 years ago. The hotel overall was in great need of money spending on it, and there was considerable evidence of neglect, which made the claims by Mercure (on the plaque in the foyer), e.g. "seeking the best of everything", rather hollow. The Staff, however, were excellent, and made up (partly) for the hotel's shortcomings.

Relaxing stay at a good value hotel. We stay here often and have never been let down. even though there was a wedding on during our first night this didn't disturb our stay. Would recommend to anyone staying in the area or looking for a cheaper option for Oxford.

Staff all helpful and friendly. Adequate facilities although the carpets on the stair treads were threadbare in places which was a potential hazard. Breakfast was ok but a bit greasy!

Welcoming reception, nice room, lovely view of the garden. Could do with some Herbal teas - no decaf options. Last thought, and didn't affect stay really, but there was no soap in the room - turns out you hadnt had a delivery - perhaps just let people know?

Tired hotel, no room service

Have always stayed here in the past but this year we had no room service for the three days we were there and had to ask for coffee tea replenishments. Towels were not replaced when wet, and requests response was very poor. Bar had only had two wines to choose from and not all the beers were on. Don't think we will be staying there next year.

Staff good and helpful but the property is in serious need of some TLC. Cleaning in the dining room needs improvement - there were cobwebs and dead flies on a window ledge.

4 of us stayed for a wedding reception we had locally down the road. The rooms were huge and very spacious, gutted we were all hungover and not in it very long to enjoy more it. Breakfast was lovely, huge selection!

Good location but has very few other redeeming qualities. Good- Common areas are nice and the food was decent enough. That is all the good I have to say about the place. Bad- First impressions not good, reception staff just stare at you as you walk in and look shocked when you ask them anything. Not so much as a “hello” or a smile when you enter so you feel as though you are intruding. It’s very awkward. The hotel is old and maze-like. Don’t expect to be given any accurate directions to your room. Room was dirty, tired and dusty. I wiped down all the sides myself as they were not clean. The wipe was dusty and dirty after I had done so. There was a sofa in the room that neither of us dared to sit on it was so stained and dirty. Lampshades also stained. Double bed was two singles zipped together with a massive seam down the middle, right side of the bed was broken and had little to no support. If the hotel were cleaner in general and the bed was fit for purpose I would stay again. As it is I definitely would not.

Headboard was so dirty in room. Fire alarm went off during evening meal we just sat, I had to get everyone out the restaurant even though it was a false alarm. Reception was unpleasant awful place to stay

I’m sure that I had in my head that this should be nicer than some other hotels in the group.. having read about them. Perhaps that impacted my expectations (in addition to price point) Sadly I found the hotel noisy due what I assume was a party. The bed was quite lumpy and I could feel the springs. Ripped wallpaper, generally hotel needing some love. The bar was sparse so no interest from me. Such a shame that the hotel itself was poor as the staff on welcome were polite, warm and friendly.

Agreed via email, months ago, that could pay for my stay with compliment vouchers. When it came to check out the reception guys would not accept them despite showing them an email string that it was agreed. "She has left" , no management in to ok it" and ive never seen them before" so had to pay via card. Very annoyed as that is why i used the hotel for that reason.

I read lots of reviews on this hotel prior to arrival and I was a little worried we had not made the right choice. Our decision to stay was definitely the right one. The hotel may not be flashy but the staff and their service was far more valuable. The breakfast was great, so much to choose from and the situation of the hotel right in the middle of everywhere. Lots of different restaurants to choose from as well as plenty of shops.

Bedroom, location, staff all incredible. The fact the dinner menu is the All day menu is a little let down. I understand there is staffing issues around the country but both waitresses where quick to get us seated and out. Both had 0 comms to each other as we got asked for food and drink order twice.

This hotel needs serious money to upgrade it. Bedrooms definitely need work, it's very tired Staff working hard to get everything right, but short staffed due to being Pinged for Covid contact.. Booked and pre paid for a meal but restaurant had been booked out for a party. Duty manager arranged for us to use at the bar meal area with complimentary drinks. The poor staff where running around trying to keep everyone happy as they had a serious staff problem. Breakfast good, bed good, but the bedroom and bathroom needs dosh spent on them. This is a lovely looking Hotel but with the likes of Premier Inn not far away, they need to up their game on the accommodation front. On check out, the poor receptionist had a dodgy PC so they were managing with one. Come on Accor, give these small Hotels a up lift , your a big international company. The lovely hard working staff are your best asset.
