Poor service; overcharging; no response from the hotel

Checked out of hotel; they failed to provide an invoice and, on checking my bank account, had overcharged me by more than £200. Eventually, someone answered the phone who promised a response after 2.30pm which never came. Sent two emails to the manager which were not answered. Would not use Mercure again.

Starting with the positives. Robin on reception for checkout was fantastic and Linda the host at breakfast was really warm and friendly. Breakfast was really good with a great variety. The hotel is in a great location in the center of Sheffield and it was perfect for exploring the Christmas market. Unfortunately everything else let this hotel down. Check in was poor, the receptionist was not welcoming and didn’t explain the hotel or the facilities. They didn’t recognize me as being a loyalty member and didn’t offer a welcome drink. We’d booked a privilege room and on arriving at the room there were empty bottles of water and an empty bottle of wine outside the room. The room was basic and was unclean. There wasn’t a mattress protector on the mattress or the pillows. The bed was hard and uncomfortable. We had booked half board as part of the package and the evening meal was a poor experience. The service was painfully slow, the restaurant was cold with no music or atmosphere. The menu was a scrappy piece of paper. 3 people were on service and were not attentive and stood talking for a good chunk of the evening. The main course was clearly microwaved and was lukewarm and the dessert had been pre made up on a plate and stored in the fridge. Unfortunately this could be a great hotel but no don’t else delivered the same standard of service we had from Robin and Linda. The bar man said the staff were overstretched and there was absence, from what we saw they weren’t overstretched or working hard to ensure guests had a great experience. Sadly wouldn’t stay again and it would put me off Mercure in the future.

I stayed at the Mecure for a month whilst my son had treatment at the children’s hospital. Upon arriving, the hotel looked lovely and staff were very welcoming and helpful. The room was a shock to begin with as it was very basic. I did get an upgrade on my last week and found that the prestige room had far comfier mattresses, bedding and pillows. I felt like all rooms should have this regardless, and the ‘upgraded rooms’ should be based off size, amenities, and room service extras. The breakfast was excellent, and the ladies there were so kind to us and went above and beyond to ensure my son and I had everything we needed. Linda and Renata are an asset to this hotel and if I ever stayed here again it would be based solely on their service. Restaurant food in the evening was very poor. The food quality was the issue I think, I serve better food to my 3 year old everyday. It was very expensive and honestly I wish I asked for a refund for every meal I tried. There were a few issues with my bill at the end, a few charges had crept on which was unaware of. Such as £5 charge on top of what you order everytime you get room service. They charged me for breakfast when it was we included with my room, and they charged me for the room upgrade when it was supposed to be a good will gesture because my room was leaking from the ceiling. Considering all this, I think my 4* is very generous but it is based on the excellent customer service from the ladies at breakfast and also the house keeping manager.

Este hotel queda en el centro de la ciudad de Sheffield. Las instalaciones son modernas y el servicio es de alta calidad. Cuenta con SPA e incluye una pileta cubierta, ideal para cuando viajas en época de clima fresco y quieres ejercitarte. Asimismo, las habitaciones son amplias y cuentan con escritorio. Es decir, si viajas por negocios o una actividad que requiera utilizar tu computador, tendrás comodidad para hacerlo.

La situación es excelente, y las zonas comunes amplias y de diseño atractivo, sin embargo, lo más determinante en mi experiencia fue la falta de luz en la habitación. La única que hay sólo sirve para encontrar la cama, pero hasta para vestirse hay poca luz. Por lo demás, el personal es bastante poco amable y el acceso a internet utiliza un sistema de bonos, que ademas de ser bastante caros, son engorrosos. Teniendo en cuenta que el acceso gratuito empieza a ser común en todo tipo de hoteles, en un 4* me parece inexcusable.
