Clean and comfortable hotel.

The hotel lifts are still broken after 2 years of us visiting. The rooms are looking a bit tired and the bed was very bouncy, it was like sleeping on a trampoline. The hotel is well located and generally clean.

Although the hotel is well located the stay was disappointing. No milk in the room, no spare pillows, noisy fan difficult to switch off. Worst breakfast I have ever had in a hotel. Cold plates, lukewarm food, no eggs even the coffee was poor.

Excellent stay

Lovely Public Areas, Good Location

This is a lovely looking hotel with extremely friendly staff, the bar and restaurant area are visually attractive. The rooms a good size. Unfortunately the two main lifts were out of order. The pillows in the bedroom really need replacing. I also felt there should have been more hand sanitising stations around the reception and in the restaurant.

Overall the trip was generally ok, was a great location and we had fun. However the privilege room we paid a premium for (£212 a night) was disappointing as the room looked tired, we had to fill up our own fridge as when we mentioned it was empty, the staff just placed the drinks outside the door to the room. They forgot our dressing gown and then also our slippers. The room had lovely views, but was very average, the TV hardly worked and the phone provided had a dead line for reception and was constantly busy for room service. Obviously we understand that after the pandemic there are staff shortages in hospitality and the staff that dealt with us were lovely, however the overall service compared against the extortionate price did not weigh up and unfortunately we would be looking to stay elsewhere next time.

Late checking in due to house keeping not having the room ready but this was ok.

Very satisfied, a shame that 2 of the lifts were out of action during our 4 night stay but just one of those things I guess.

Good location and welcoming staff however breakfast was poor including running out of fruit, unclean service areas and supplies of milk, hot water etc not being maintained. Air conditioning in room could not be adjusted to comfortable level (too warm) even after maintenance team advised they had rectified. All in all a let down for Mercure.

Great Reception Staff and a comfortable weekend stay on the edge of the Peak District

Customer review rating 4.5/5

Durham D. Business - 06/09/2021 Confirmed reviews ALL

The hotel was clearly fully booked, but despite the crowd waiting to be seen by the Reception staff, Annu and Paula behaved impeccably under pressure and delivered customer service where it is often sadly lacking in the hotel and accommodation sector. Two excellent staff the hotel should acknowledge as being a credit to the Mercure Sheffiels St Paul's.

Could Have Been Better No Way 4*

Francesca D. Families - 05/09/2021 Confirmed reviews ALL

Check In was Smooth. On entering the room it smelt of food (curry) no nice smells to make me feel like I was in somewhere fresh. The carpet looked worn and not clean. To be fare the room looked shabby and no way would I have rated this a 4* Hotel. We ventured out got in the lift which took us to floor 6 from floor 3 to then be stood with staff members. We pressed for the lift to go down but on 4 occasions the kept opening and shutting to which staff member stated it had been doing this a few times. We decided to take the stairs. There were two lifts that were closed why was this? On the evening I went to get drinks and asked how I would open my bottle. I was told the bottle opener was in my room which it wasn't. I tried ringing reception but no answer then trying room service no answer and I left it ringing a while. I went down a little later for fresh air and saw a lady who looked like a manager different coloured suit and she asked how things were I stated the fact that I was not impressed with having to open my bottle with my teeth. She made light of the situation asking if my teeth were OK to which I replied they were intact but still no bottle opener was sent to the room. Poor Service. My Son and I had a unsettled night as the room was red hot. I tried on numerous occasions to sort the thermostat in the room but to no avail. In the morning I made reception aware of this issue to which she stated she woukd get someone to bring an air con unit. On my return to the room the thermostat had switched itself on and was working? We eventually found the pool after finding out that we need to sign in and retrieve the code from the spa reception which I was not told when checking in. The pool was lovely but that was the only thing that was to be fare. I also noticed that there were not many sanatising stations and as we are still very much in a pandemic these measures should be of upmost importance. I would not recommend staying at the Mecure Sheffield. Also the WiFi... I asked reception if there was a problem with the WiFi as my son coukd not use his device (Nintendo switch) the answer I got was it may not support it?? WiFi is WiFi made no sence and this is part of your service?? This was a little trip for myself and Son as we had not been away in the 6 weeks holiday and felt not going too far from home would be a nice treat in a little luxery. I was dissapoinyed to say the least. I know I only paid a reduced rate but still I have stayed in far better 3* and felt luxery. Sorry we will not be returning

The service in the restaurant is very slow! Overall good stay, except, had to complain about a pudding (Eton Mess) and sent back to the kitchen the chef refused to agree that it was a pretty poor representation of an Eton mess. After making it clear I was not going to pay for it I eventually got a credit...the customer is not always right here!

No masks

Staff were not always masked. Masks dramatically reduce the risk of Covid-19 spread. I felt unsafe.

Mixed as Usual

The check-in desk has little authority always having to refer to the manager. The staff change frequently, lately it seems almost weekly (i am there one to two weeks a month). Only Fabio in the restaurant / bar looks to be the most professional. Cleanliness in the rooms is just about ok. Most rooms the TV remote batteries need changing. The lifts are frequently broken (7 times out of 10). On a positive note the breakfast staff and breakfast are very good. We are awaiting the Mercure at Sheffield Parkway to re-open where we were the No.2 account spend every year for my company. As soon as this re-opens we will revert back there.

Well located but standards deteriorating

Anne W. Couples - 04/09/2021 Confirmed reviews ALL

Booked a premier room, first room allocated next to the spa lift, only lift working in the hotel.Reallocated to a new room ,no problems with the room but daily housekeeping only given on asking .Chamber maid already overworked I would not dream of overburdening her ,hardest worker in the hotel. We had visited the hotel in May it was amazing but this time, my husband and I feel disappointed . I understand the hotel has many long stay council residents but standards give to paying guests should not be effected . Service given by most reception staff very discourteous and patronising .One receptionist on 2/9 very polite ,her customer service put manager and staff to shame . We will not stop again unless standards change.

Lots of issues

Customer review rating 2.5/5

Frances Families - 03/09/2021 Confirmed reviews ALL

Whilst the hotel is clean and well-located and the staff friendly, there were lots of issues with our stay. The TV was missing from one of our rooms; asking for supplies that were missing from the room resulted in a wait of several hours; there were no staff at the restaurant when we arrived in the evening for our meal on the second night and we had to go into the kitchen and ask the chef for someone to seat us, we waited 15 minutes in the end; the spa staff at one point told me I owed £108, when I actually owed them no money. Zoe in the spa was excellent though.

Just stayed at this lovely hotel for 4 nights and will definitely be returning! Hotel was in a perfect location for exploring the city, Buffet breakfast was excellent with a good selection of hot and cold food. Large spacious bedroom with a comfortable bed and hot shower. Used the swimming pool which was great. Staff friendly and helpful and couldn’t do enough to make my stay pleasant.

Not accessible for people with mobility issues or dexterity issues. Didn't clean.

Access issues; broken lifts and you need to be able to use smartphone to get info. The lifts were broken for the entire time I was there so they directed us to the back one. But if you are wobbly on your feet . . . that means a long wait and getting in and out via the space used for moving linens, towels and other detritus around in. Cue 4 days of knocking over wine glasses and tripping on sheets plus the lift door shut on my arm once. If you can't use a smartphone all the time, you can't get any info. They no longer provide anything via any method other than QR code ('because of covid' - covid is spread by air not touch) They aren't cleaning the rooms while you stay, ('because of covid'), but none of the staff mask and they won't make guests do so. My room had been left propped open when I arrived and the bed wasn't properly made up. I tried speaking to staff about the issues and the staff member seemed not to understand anything I said. I tried emailing and got no reply.

We enjoyed our stay and the location of the hotel. However, we were surprised by how dirty our room and the communal areas were. Items of clothing from the previous guests were left in our room and the room was not clean. We had interconnecting rooms and only one was stocked with tea and bath products etc.. We had to go to reception to collect lots of missing items. At no point during our 4 night stay was our room cleaned or new towels brought. I am aware we could have asked for these, but it seemed I was constantly on the phone to reception. I was also very disappointed that despite a 4 night stay our room was not cleaned. Items from room service were often left in the communal areas. Glasses and bottles were left by a lift in a dangerous position. I called to ask for them to be removed, but they were still there many hours later.
