Near the Crucible but not ideal to stay here

TripAdvisor rating 2.0/5

KAREN B TripAdvisor review

I booked this hotel a year ago and paid in full on booking £384 for two nights. I was coming to the snooker so thought it was ideally placed. Hotel is ideally placed for the snooker, but other hotels are too, I spotted them from walking round. Its a quiet area set back from the road and the hotel is smaller than you think giving it a more informal setting. Staff were all delightful friendly . That's the good bit apart from it being expensive. I do not feel the hotel lives up to its fees. I thought the spa would be nice but thermal part out of action until May it would appear. Pool open to the public including set school access so not ideal for guests as times are limited by this public access for comfort of guests. Food very limited had one evening meal there as a vegan it was very limited but they tried and staff again lovely. Breakfast limited. Dining area cracked floor tiles scratched tables and chairs stained. All self service no pampering here! TV in room is limited to a tiny amount of channels so could not watch snooker at night as the channels not available! Worst bit was the tiny dark room I needed my phone torch to find things at night in my bag or a drawer. Drying my hair hard to see even to set the hairdryer. Bathroom tiny and basic, narrow chipped bath no dressing gown, rock hard towels that didn't dry you properly. Shampoo and soap in a dispenser wall attached in the shower only so could not have a bath as I hadn't brought soap. Noisy aircon, windows don't open so a lack of fresh air. Poo brown curtains and thread bare brown stained carpet. Skirting coming away cracked ceiling tiles by door, thought poly tiles were not ideal these days anyway? Bed lumpy didn't look like its had been replaced for years. Four lumpy pillows that the filling had clumped I spent the night with my head on a stack of towels and my coat as it felt better than the pillow. No tea making facilities. Those magnolia colour walls and drab decor made me want to get out of there. Sadly even though I enjoyed the break this hotel did not live up to the luxury I expected for what I paid. It was like student digs not a spa hotel of quality.

Fabulous location

First off if I went on the other reviews I would have not came here, the hotel is old but it’s lovely and cosy, the staff are super friendly, and the rooms are very comfortable. Hotel bar is lovely too. Stayed here for the snooker, great location very central. They also provide a gluten free selection for breakfast, not a lot but it was enjoyable. I would stay here again

Great location - could do with some TLC

We come here every year for the WST snooker at the crucible. The hotel has the greatest location for the snooker, however, the hotel is tired. The decor needs updating. The room even though we got a huge suite this time, was tired. No niceties in the room or even water. There were no windows we could open for fresh air, so was very stuffy. The gym equipment was mainly broken, loads out of order and screens didn’t work. There were no windows or fresh air in there. The sauna and steam room were all out of order too. The drinks in the bar are expensive but tiny, and rubbish coffee. Breakfast was ok but nothing amazing. Parking is available at the local Q park car park. It was expensive - £46 for two nights. Overall, it’s great for the snooker but book a big room so you have a bit more space.

Very disappointing for the price

This is the 4th time in 4 year we have visited this hotel. We usually return every year as it is a convenient location for the snooker world championships- however every year we go, the facilities seem to get worse. The hotel needs a refresh, paint is coming off the walls, grout is peeling off in the bathroom, there are large cracks on walls and not once has the air con worked properly. This year it didn’t work at all, our room was oppressively hot for our whole stay, This year, we booked a suite to try and get a better room but didn’t even get a bottle of water. The shower in our room, couldn’t maintain its temperature either. The issues with the facilities extend to the common areas with the seating in the bar either falling apart or heavily stained. The staff are unfriendly and seem resigned to the issues when you bring them up. Even extending to when you come down in the morning they don’t acknowledge your presence or reply when you say good morning. No one asked how our stay was, once. In all, I think the hotel needs some major investment to justify the price point. Until we see that investment I don’t think we will go back.

Small room for Privilege room, and badly managed bar/terrace area

The room size (room 602) was disappointing in size for a king-sized privilege room, much smaller than a standard room we have stayed in before. The bathroom was a good size however. The terrace area of the bar was occupied by three homeless people who just wandered up and sat down (not buying a drink) and also a group of lads taking drugs (smoking weed), again no evidence they had bought a drink, which made for a very unpleasant experience sitting out. Tables were dirty also. No sign of any staff covering this area. We did see one young chap behind the bar (staff I think), who didn't have a name badge and had a dirty crumpled check jacket on - didn't think he was anyone with authority. None of the bar/terrace experience was appropriate for a 4 star hotel.
