I stayed during Lockdown for work so it was hard to rate the services as none were readily available. Breakfast was a grab and go or taken back to my room. I didn't eat evening meals as they didn't appeal to me. Room wasn't cleaned due to covid. Was clean on arrival, stated in 2 rooms, both were nice, spacious and comfy but in need of some updates. Walls were tired, bathroom had peeling bits on walls, ceilings, bath panals, some furniture was worn, ripped and in need of repair and the carpets were also worn. Staff were friendly and accommodating, although 2 nights I tried to ring reception and there was no response so I had to walk down. Parking was OK but charged 12 a night.

I had interviews during lockdown. To be prepared for an on line interview for one job first thing in the morning I needed a quiet night's sleep before hand and a quiet space for the interview before I set off to be interviewed face to face for a job in Winchester. The Wessex and the kind staff at the hotel afforded the peace and space I needed.

We enjoyed our stay and very much appreciate the way your staff managed the whole Covid thing. The room was a bit shabby though, especially considering it was a Privilege one.

I regularly stay here with my partner for work. Recently I was daft enough to leave a very expensive tweed jacket in the room. I didn't notice until days later but when I rang up enquiring if it had been found your staff member Rebekah was fantastic. She checked lost property and whilst it wasn't there, called me back to let me know and advised she will speak to house keeping the following day ti see if they had it. True to her word she did and called me to confirm shed got it. She kindly posted it to me that day and I was reunited with my jacket the following afternoon. A lot of staff in hotels don't care about such things but Rebekah went above and beyond and her help is gratefully received. She's an absolute credit to your team and it gives me confidence that I can stay away in a place where people really do care, so thank you

Very helpful staff, especially with early and staggered breakfasts for my family needs. Hotel chosen for location and the car park - but it would have been nice to have had upfront details about car parking charges on the website or Booking.com rather than having to contact the hotel myself to find out

Enjoyed our stay. The hotel is in an excellent location for seeing all the sights of Winchester. Everything is in walking distance. We booked a room with a Cathedral view which was great - one of best hotel views. Staff very helpful and polite and enjoyed breakfast.

Our room was brilliant but the lack of menu choice and service was not good. On arrival, when checking in I asked if breakfast was included which I was told was. However, when checking out I was charged for it. I did relay my check in conversation but was basically told that was a wrong and I still had to pay. We booked a table in the restaurant and we’re not told that it was voided and it was only the bar food menu available. If we’d have known this we would have eaten out. This was further compelled when we saw the lack of choice on the menu. The food we ordered was very average and it’s the first time that I’ve had to use a knife to cut into my rice! On check out, I wanted to use my Accor points but when I gave my membership number I was told the system wasn’t allowing it and I had to pay. This was totally unacceptable and I refused to do this and gave the staff an hour to dirt it out which to their credit they did. Overall it was pretty disappointing but the room & location of the hotel us great.

Very disappointed in the room, firstly I requested a high floor and had a room on the 1st floor. The room was one if the smaller ones whereby the advertised photos show larger rooms of this category with 2 armchairs , when I went back to the reception and spoke to Hope she advised the hotel was full and could not give us another room, she was mist unhelpful. I later discovered from several other staff members that the hotel was far from full, so why lie!!. Also at the time of booking I paid VAT which came to >£20 but now there is 0 VAT I was mo offered any refund, unlike the Accor group who gave me a refund without asking!! I have stayed in many Mercure hotels and have not been disappointed but after this experience I doubt we will stay with Mercure again.

With regards to the difference in VAT, this was put in place to support businesses severely affected and to protect jobs. There is a 5% VAT at the moment and not the 0% you mention in your review.
