ibis Darmstadt City Hotel 2 stars

First of all, the staff is very friendly and do their very best to help you make your stay comfortable!!! I arrived late at night around 22.00hrs. I found the reception desk empty and shouted softly a few hello's? Turned out the night manager was helping out another guest somewhere in the hotel. I was a bit annoyed by the wait, but he was so friendly once it was my turn, that I let it go. Then I got the handicapped room. It was really nice to find out they have one, but when on your own, that room with a bathroom that is as wide as the room itself and a bed in front of the closet and only a power output in the bathroom and by the single bed in front of the window and no desk wasn't really a treat. It is a very sterile room. Nothing comfortable about it and when I switched on the tele to have some distraction all 40+ channels where in German where I just wanted something else. I was too tired to go back to the reception. But decided later on I would ask the next morning if it would be possible to switch as I really wasn't comfortable in this room. Also I needed a desk to change my antibiotics pump that I was attached to that weekend, and in this room it would mean sitting on the floor with my equipment on the bed. Not really a good idea. Then there was music heard when I arrived. Not too relaxed but I expected it to go away in a few hours. It was a Saturday night so people in other rooms might want to go out or something and have their music on. But then it was still on at 12.45am. I called the night manager and he told me he was going to have a look. After about half an hour I called again and he told me he couldn't locate the source of the music. He came up to my room try to find out, but in the end gave me another room on the other side of the hotel as it was really hard to locate the sound. The change solved all my problems at once. The breakfast buffet was good, lots of variety and fresh. Hotel is only two or three stops or a 15 min walk from the central station and close to many public transport lines. And the staff kept my medication in the fridge and gave it back to me when needed, which was necessary but also really nice.

My first experience was the difficulty in parking my car. The room was very basic with a small unitized bathroom. I had difficulty sleeping because the air conditioning did not work. The outside temp. was in the low 20°’s C ( 70°’s F), but running the a/c only warmed up the room, so I had to open the window and use a fan (supplied by hotel staff). Traffic was noisy most of the night and early morning along with the fan, which made it difficult to fall asleep. When I tried to watch the small TV, the max volume setting was 17, which was barely loud enough to hear in a silent room. With the open window and fan running, it was impossible to understand the TV. The hotel staff said that the “Hausmeister” (maintenance man) was on vacation, so nothing could be done about the a/c and there were no open rooms for me to move to. The room itself was acceptable for the price, but I was very disappointed by bathroom and a/c situation. The temperature would have been unbearable in the summer.

I waited for about 10 minutes to check in even though there were 5 members of staff at the desk and no other guest. Comfortable bed and quiet room but cleaners still opened my door in the morning with the “do not disturb” sign hanging outside.

I had checked in online but it took me 30 minutes to get my room key. The front desk was not competent. A very bad first impression. The room was clean and the price was reasonable. The parking was only Euro 5.00 per day. I only had breakfast once and it was good.

It was all like expected for ahotel in this price range.

Room looked rather dark and used over long time. Table at window (3rd bed?) difficult to use for working, no room for legs. No safe. Sleeping experience was average, don't know why it is called "new concept", to me it seemed old-fashioned. For a short stay, the room covered the necessary basics (a bed, a washroom, a window), but not much more. What I find strange is that the Ibis Budget hotel just next doors (where I stay more often) has the more modern and friendly rooms. I would have expected it the other way round.

The room was big nice and clean, the shower was warm and big. Bed was very comfortable. What did surpise me were 1) No plugs near the bedside table to charge the phone -- way better, a plug with a usb port 2) The staff was laughing in astonishment when I wanted to pay a camomille (2.5 euros) with the credit card and kept repeating "Paying a camomille with a credit card....unbelievable". After a while I told the lady that in many other european countries it totally acceptable and nobody will make a fuss about it, but from where we both came, still it's considered as quirckness/drama/luxury/like shooting to a fly with a cannon. For the rest, all perfect. and even more so, when I checked out and I forgot the recepit in my room hotel and request not to destroy it/send it scanned via email. The lady of the morning issued a new receipt and in no time sent it at my email address. Very appreciated.

Everything is fine except that know breakfasts are printed as breakfasts in the bill, not as a business package. Considering that my company pays for everything except breakfasts I will choose another hotel to stay in my limits.

Well located halfway between train station and Luisenplatz city center. About 10 minute safe walk in each direction.

Good location of the hotel, nice room and optimal selection for breakfast.

Very convenient as very close to town centre. The rooms require a plug socket near to the bed in order to charge mobile phones over night.

Wу arrive on next morning after a reservation day due to flight cancellation. And we're told on reception that our reservation was cancelled despite our college come to an Hotel last evening and warn reception desk about this case. HE'was answered that mark will be made and there should be no problems.

Warm welcome, friendly staff, clean room as wished with a view. Perfect for a one night stay.
