A big improvement over the last stay

Darkwind TripAdvisor review

I booked a 4-night stay here over the King's Birthday weekend (I wonder how long it's going to take before typing "King's" doesn't feel strange). It was something of a last-minute trip and my choices for accommodation were therefore limited, so the choice was rather foisted upon me. I've stayed here before, way back in 2015, and I'm pleased to say things have improved considerably since then. I recall the place being spotlessly clean, but tired and in need of a fairly drastic renovation. Arriving with that recollection in mind, I'm happy to report that I was extremely pleasantly surprised. The work has taken place at some point during the intervening 8 years and it has made a huge improvement. I stayed on the top floor, in a Queen room. I was a little dismayed to see that the room was right next to the lifts, thinking it might be a bit noisy, but in the event I wasn't troubled at all. The room was spacious and well-appointed, with ironing board, iron, hairdryer, kettle and refreshment accoutrements, colour TV and telephone. The bathroom could have hosted a surgical operation, it was that clean. For my own personal preference, the bed was a tad soft, but I can't fault it otherwise. It was clean, the pillows actually provided decent support and the linen felt very luxurious. If I had any gripe about the room at all, it would be that the bed being located immediately underneath the windows made for a rather chilly night's sleep - not that it was bad enough to keep me awake I hasten to add. However my head and shoulders noticed the cold seeping through the window and it required some serious snuggling to remedy the problem. I didn't have much interaction with the staff beyond check-in/out, but those who helped me with that were friendly and professional. For me, the only downside about the hotel is that it doesn't have many choices for food nearby. I seem to recall there were more options when I stayed in that area previously, but perhaps they were casualties of the pandemic. If you eat McDonalds (I don't), there is one on Lambton Quay, along with a couple of other small cafes, but that's about it. If you want a proper meal that doesn't fall under the umbrella term "Junk Food" Cuba Street & the surrounding area is pretty-much your only option. While Cuba Street isn't really THAT far, I can vouch for the fact that it's certainly far enough to get thoroughly soaked in the rain. All-in-all, I'd stay here again, and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to friends looking for reasonably-priced accommodation near the Beehive.

Everything was great all round.

Always try and stay at IBIS Featherston St. This time I was overbooked for the same night, then, following a transfer to another date, found that my booking had no record of my pre paid corporate details.

Nice easy and relaxed
