Worst Hotel Experience Ever – Do Better, Novotel Rotorua Our stay at Novotel Rotorua was appalling from start to finish — an absolute disaster that left us feeling disrespected, disgusted, and completely unwelcome. We booked three rooms for our group and spent a significant amount of money, only to be told our rooms weren’t ready hours after check-in time. No urgency, no apology — just a dismissive “you’ll have to wait.” Meanwhile, other guests walked straight through check-in with no delays. When we finally got to our rooms, they were filthy. The bathroom hadn’t even been cleaned — hair in the sink, grime in the shower, and worst of all, the used, damp towels we had left on the floor for housekeeping were picked up and PUT BACK on the bed and in the bathroom like they were fresh. It was not only lazy, it was disgusting and unhygienic. The sheets had visible stains, and to top it off, there was a dirty sock left under the bed — proof that the room hadn’t been properly cleaned or inspected. But the worst part? The treatment we received at reception. After all that, the manager gave us a 30% discount on dinner for our group of 8. Not ideal, but we appreciated the gesture — until we watched a white family of four right next to us receive FREE breakfast and dinner with smiles and warm treatment. No explanation. Just privilege on full display. We were made to feel like second-class citizens. Whether the hotel wants to admit it or not, it felt like blatant racial profiling — we were overlooked, disregarded, and treated like we didn’t belong there. This was supposed to be a celebratory getaway. Instead, we left feeling embarrassed, angry, and deeply disappointed. Novotel Rotorua needs to be held accountable — for their standards of cleanliness, customer service, and most of all, for how they treat people of color. Never again. Avoid this place at all cost

Location is great, near the lake and Rotorua's eat street. Room with lake view was ok, clean and comfortable beds. Buffet breakfast was disappointing though. If not included in your room, better to find another place. The reception staff during our check in was nice and helpful. Would still consider staying again because of the location.

I booked three rooms at this hotel for one night through an online platform. We arrived at the hotel around 7 PM, after dark, and parked our car in the parking lot next to the hotel. We then checked in and left the next morning. To our surprise, about a week later, we received a $65 parking fine from the parking lot company. When we called the hotel to ask why a guest would receive a parking fine, the response was that the hotel does not offer free parking and that there is a sign outside indicating this. However, we arrived after dark, and the sign was not visible. Moreover, no hotel staff informed us of any parking fees during check-in. If the hotel charges guests for parking, there should be a clear system in place—such as a gated entry or obvious signage at the entrance—so that guests are made fully aware that this is a paid parking area. It is extremely disappointing to see that the hotel has separated its own parking lot and allowed another company to manage it in a way that targets the hotel’s own guests for profit. This practice feels deceptive and unethical, and we feel ashamed for having stayed at a hotel that engages in such questionable business conduct.

This hotel is in a good location close to downtown and restaurant row. We had a great view of the lake. It's an older hotel and needs of some updates. The pool was very cloudy looking didn't look inviting the thermal pool had some black stuff floating in the water so we did not use them. No pool towels in sight if you needed one you would have to go to the front desk. The workout room was average and the front side of the gym was all glass so anyone could watch you work out (not a fan of that). They had a restaurant inside the hotel but very expensive to eat there so we didn't.
