We just enjoyed a fantastic 3 centre trip to Egypt ... Aswan, Luxor for history and El Qusier for beach and snorkeling.  We started at the fabulous Sofitel Legend Old Cataract in Aswan. It certainly is a legend with an amazing history and many famous visitors. More important though, is the incredible location ... right on the edge of the Nile.   We stayed in the Nile Wing. Whilst it is not attractive externally !!! the rooms are beautifuly appointed with every modern amenity and large balconies with fantastic views of the Nile.  All the staff are welcoming and helpful and we very much enjoyed a hotel tour of the Agatha Chrstie and Winston Churchill suites with Batsi. Breakfast used to be on the outside terrace, but is now served in the amazing 1902 restaurant. We also had dinner there, which was excellent and surprisingly reasonable.  The pool area is glorious and was very quiet during our visit, as most visitors are out on sightseeing tours. We have stayed here twice before so this time we did not venture out to Aswan, nor make the 8 hour round trip to Abu Simbel. Do go there if you have time ... it is incredible. Philae temple is more accessible and can be done in a couple of hours. Back at the hotel, enjoy a drink on The Promenade watching the feluccas glide serenely by as the sun goes down. Magical !

This is the most lovely hotel. The situation is perfect with wonderful views of the Nile. The atmosphere is relaxed and elegant and you feel transported back to the very best of he 1930’s. The staff were excellent, especially Nour who showed us around. We dream of coming back.

Best Choice in Aswan, yet hotel itself needs to improve its very own selling point

Before boarding the steamer Karnak, Hercule Poirot and his fellow travelers gathered at a riverside hotel on the Nile. In the 1978 adaptation of Death on the Nile, I vividly recall the steamer pulling away from the dock, leaving behind a scene of elegantly dressed gentlemen and ladies waving their goodbyes. They seemed not only to bid farewell to the characters but also to extend a gracious welcome to the audience. Behind them, framed by a few sparse date palms, stood a pink Victorian edifice shimmering in the sunlight like a palace. Amid the hazy dust of Egypt, this oasis on the banks of the Nile appeared surreal—dreamlike and intoxicating. To me, this was also my first impression of Egypt as a child: a place both elegant and illusory. The hotel in question is the Old Cataract, nestled between the cataracts of the Nile and the Nubian Desert at the southern edge of ancient Egypt. When Thomas Cook established it in 1899, it quickly became a favored retreat for Western aristocracy and a symbol of the colonial-era fascination with oriental adventures. Agatha Christie, upon discovering the Old Cataract, stayed for many years. Its surroundings—desert, oasis, the Nile, and the hotel itself—morphed in her imagination into the setting for Death on the Nile. With the original film adaptation shot on location, the hotel regained worldwide attention. Over the course of a century, it has been a silent witness to major archaeological discoveries in southern Egypt, a host to royalty from across the globe, and a serene yet pivotal presence in the currents of history. Dining I once eagerly anticipated dining at the 1902 Restaurant, not just for its ambiance but because of its role as a filming location for Death on the Nile. In reality, however, the experience fell short of expectations. While the restaurant imposes a strict dress code for dinner, guests without proper attire can rent ill-fitting garments at the entrance—a curious sight that added an unintended touch of absurdity to the evening. The quality of the food was disappointingly mediocre. If the hotel wishes to preserve the charm of the 1902 Restaurant, maintaining a higher culinary standard seems imperative. For hotel guests, breakfast is also served in the 1902 Restaurant. There, the dress code is relaxed, eliminating the need to book a formal dinner just to see the venue as the food at fine dining was not impressive at all. Yet even breakfast failed to impress—its offerings were limited, diminishing the allure I had once associated with the famed dining room. Service The service throughout the hotel was exemplary. Staff members were consistently warm, attentive, and professional, making every interaction a pleasure. Facilities We stayed in the hotel’s newer wing and were fortunate to receive a complimentary upgrade to a suite. The spacious suite featured a large balcony with panoramic views of the Nile and the hotel’s historic main building, which was stunning. The room’s modern amenities, including two bathrooms, were thoughtfully designed to save us time and enhance the comfort of our stay.

Stunning hotel and Stunning location
