The Best things to do in Barcelona

Here’s a few suggestions on how to make the most of your trip…

When it comes to backpacking around Europe, interrailing holidays are the best. Their built-in freedom and flexibility provide a liberation that more structured forms of travel sometimes lack. If you’re spending your summer train-hopping, then a stop in the sparkling city of Barcelona is an absolute must. Not only are there a wealth of tourist hotspots to explore across its sun-kissed streets but there’s also plenty of off-the-beaten-track discoveries to be found just a short distance from its central point. As if all that wasn’t enough, the city comes complete with a collection of affordable hotels near Barcelona train station to make your inter railing jaunt as accessible as possible.

Els Encants Vells Flea Market

1. Visit Els Encants Vells Flea Market

Put that interrailing ticket to use by hopping a ride to Glòries station just a short 20-minute train journey from central Sants. Here you’ll find Els Encants Vells, the city’s legendary flea market.
This long-standing spot is one huge open space and perfect for some lazy meandering away from the summer sun. One inside, you’ll find all sorts, from gypsy stalls and long forgotten household items, to clothing and pairs of new Nikes! The building’s unusual shape makes it a must-see spot for architecture nuts, too

2. Soak up the view at Carretera de les Aigües

Jump back on the train and travel to Carretera de les Aigües station via Peu de Funicular to find the hills of Collserola and the best views of Barcelona around.
Once home to the city’s water pipes, this popular hiking, cycling, and all-round outdoorsy spot is now one of the city’s most popular places for a morning jog or moment of silence amid the city centre. Follow its curving pathway and you’ll find unrivalled views of Barcelona and its picturesque coastline. The hike will only take about an hour, but your memories of the experience are bound to last longer.
tapas at Cuines Santa Caterina

3. Eat fresh tapas at Cuines Santa Caterina

No visit to Barcelona is complete without a few tapas dishes, and you’re unlikely to find a better or fresher collection than those available at Cuines Santa Caterina.
