Built in the mid-19th century as Figueira da Foz was becoming well known, Bairro Novo – the "new quarter" – has lent vast Praia da Claridade beach a stately air not unlike the Biarritz seafront. You'll find the same glamorous, extravagant mix of art nouveau and art deco architecture alongside typical Portuguese flourishes, as seen on ornate façades like the Castelo Engenheiro Silva. Now housing the tourist office, its style was inspired by both medieval and Manueline motifs.
Bairro Novo is also known for its casinos, notably the monumental Casino Figueira, where you can try your luck on the games, watch a musical extravaganza or simply admire the ornate decor. As well as the slot machines and gaming tables, the majestic halls, bars and restaurants of the casino welcome artists from all fields, with a schedule of events ranging from acoustic concerts to cabaret and contemporary dance. Much of the local nightlife and restaurant scene is found in the surrounding streets, with numerous bars, cafés and restaurants along the beach and the elegant arteries of the town centre.

Figueira da Foz is home to several museums and monuments for art and history lovers. The Núcleo Museológico do Mar looks at local history with a focus on the region's maritime past. Its name, which means "beach of clarity", refers to the sparkle of the sun's rays on this huge expanse of fine sand. Surfers can head for Buarcos Beach at the northern end of Praia da Claridade, or try Cabedelo on the opposite bank of the Mondego River. There are plenty of surfing schools offering group or solo lessons for all ages and levels of ability.
