What to see in Figueira da Foz

Bairro Novo

Built in the mid-19th century as Figueira da Foz was becoming well known, Bairro Novo – the "new quarter" – has lent vast Praia da Claridade beach a stately air not unlike the Biarritz seafront. You'll find the same glamorous, extravagant mix of art nouveau and art deco architecture alongside typical Portuguese flourishes, as seen on ornate façades like the Castelo Engenheiro Silva. Now housing the tourist office, its style was inspired by both medieval and Manueline motifs.
Bairro Novo is also known for its casinos, notably the monumental Casino Figueira, where you can try your luck on the games, watch a musical extravaganza or simply admire the ornate decor. As well as the slot machines and gaming tables, the majestic halls, bars and restaurants of the casino welcome artists from all fields, with a schedule of events ranging from acoustic concerts to cabaret and contemporary dance. Much of the local nightlife and restaurant scene is found in the surrounding streets, with numerous bars, cafés and restaurants along the beach and the elegant arteries of the town centre.

Cultural visits

Figueira da Foz is home to several museums and monuments for art and history lovers. The town's main cultural institution is the Museu Municipal Santos Rocha, housed in a contemporary building and presenting collections covering antiquity, medieval religious art, colonial-style furniture and decorative arts from Africa and Asia.
The Núcleo Museológico do Mar looks at local history with a focus on the region's maritime past. For many years Figueira da Foz lived principally from its fishing industry, and you can admire old boats made from painted wood, see traditional tools used by the fishermen and dip into the museum archives to understand how fishing is deeply entrenched in the town's heritage.
The old bishop's palace, the Casa do Paço is renowned for its interiors swathed with intricate blue-and-white azulejos, typically Portuguese tiles forming a monumental artwork representing diverse landscapes and historic scenes. Other landmarks representing the town's heritage include the Paço de Maiorca, for many years the residence of Majorcan viscounts, and religious treasures like the sparkling-white churches of Matriz de São Julião and Santo António.

Outdoor activities in Figueira da Foz

Beaches

Above all, Figueira da Foz owes its reputation to its spectacular natural setting edging the Atlantic Ocean. The principal town beach, Praia da Claridade, is one of the largest in Portugal. Its name, which means "beach of clarity", refers to the sparkle of the sun's rays on this huge expanse of fine sand. Spend downtime swimming or sunbathing and then retreat to one of the terrace bars or restaurants overlooking the sea.
Surfers can head for Buarcos Beach at the northern end of Praia da Claridade, or try Cabedelo on the opposite bank of the Mondego River. There are plenty of surfing schools offering group or solo lessons for all ages and levels of ability.

Serra da Boa Viagem

Serra da Boa Viagem Forest Park is popular for hiking to viewpoints with panoramas across the town to the sea. The high-rope courses at Parque Aventura Figueira da Foz have challenges for all abilities as well as group activities and paintball sessions – in short, it's the perfect spot for a fun-packed day with friends and family.
